I'll take "Love Shack" any day of the week and twice on Sunday over a Kid Rock ballad, dude, lol, sorry.

The Shoveller: Mr_Ectomy: Oil Kings/ Winterhawks Game 5 is on tonight. Anyone? ANYONE?

Was contemplating attending, but I have to get the house prepped for some showings tomorrow, so we'll be staying home and cleaning.

Maybe if they go 7....

Go Winterhawks!

/at least there's hockey in Portland - albeit 17yr olds, but it's still hockey damnit!

LucklessWonder: I have no musical ability whatsoever, and my singing voice has been compared unfavorably to that of a dead yak, but when it comes to drunken karaoke, my 4 go tos are:

"Love Shack" by the B-52's
"Wanted Dead or Alive" by Bon Jovi
"Don't Stop Believing" by Journey
"Sister Christian" by Night Ranger

hmm...

I always end up with:
GNR song (Paradise City, usually)
Bon Jovi (It's my Life, usually)
Scorpions (Rock you like a Hurricane)
Ice Ice Baby at some point

and wow as the evening progresses at that place and you skip ahead you get the skinny ass shakers. Which is cute at first but then you go "umm, that's not dancing unless I get to put a dollar in your underwear and see your tits"

Well, I don't actually care about Portland. So really, GO SVEN!

Easily their best song. Though I am partial to "November Rain," it's just too long for karaoke, and "Patience" is the sloppy morning after still drunk singalong song when you're in an "I love you, man" hugging everybody mood.

Has anyone mentioned "Roxanne" by the Police?

Excellent drinking song and fantastic karaoke song when everyone's drunk, or on their way.

I love you a little bit for bringing the Smiths into a pseudo-hockey thread.

Thanks to whoever greenlit this, also. Too much fun.

Also, I have a decent baritone, which means I'm underrepresented in the staples, but I hate doing those anyway. I'm the crazy bastard who does Thunder Road or Born to Run.

Or I go the entire other way, and sing (baby you're a) Firework. Cross-singing is far more fun than doing Don't Stop Believing for the billionth time.

Springsteen works really well. I love doing Dancing in the Dark.

Outside of that, a lot of 70s and 80s rock. Billy Joel, Elton John, maybe some occasional Gin Blossoms to push things into the 90s...

I need to try Hall and Oates next time.

Right there with ya. Going falsetto seems to be a crowd-pleaser too. I've found "Rolling in the Deep" to get some great responses.

I've always gotten a meh review on my performance on Dancing, but people seem to like my enthusiasm for Thunder Road (my fav Bruce song, I admit). I think it's because the former's slower, like Streets of Philadelphia...you really have to nail it if you're going to do it. Same with some of my favorites from CSNY or James Taylor - nobody wants to hear a bad rendition of Fire and Rain, but if you can hit it...

Anything off New Miserable Experience will knock 'em dead, good call. I also like some Goo Goo Dolls early in the evening, before too many people want power rock. Slide or Name, maybe, Black Balloon or Iris if I'm feeling mopey.

Also, for the dudes, Criminal by Fiona Apple. Hilarious if done well, even more hilarious done badly.

LucklessWonder: // also, howling, "I was off to drink you away...."

Naw, if you want to do a male/female duet embrace the cheesiness and repetition and bust out "I got you babe" by Sonny & Cher. Bonus points if the male mimes skiing into a tree to close.

Agree that "Picture" is awful. Depending on your relationship to the MOS you're dueting with, perhaps try "Need You Now". Two administrators at my school performed "I Got You Babe" in costume to great hilarity at the first annual freshman "showcase". My family has video tape of it somewhere.

When my family went to a vacation resort last summer, some siblings and I went to karaoke night. One of my sister's did "The Lion Sleeps Tonight". You're already making a fool of yourself, so why not make it a complete joke?

desertgeek: //Meanwhile here's a guy who I agree with: the puck over glass rule is farking dumb.

Fark that. His argument is "people are committing this penalty by being stupid, so we should remove the penalty", and I don't know that I agree with his claim that dumping the puck into the stands was never something anyone did before it was a penalty.
The trapezoid, or "Fark Martin Brodeur Rule" as I like to call it, is far worse and more pointless. Why does that exist, again?

RminusQ: The trapezoid, or "Fark Martin Brodeur Rule" as I like to call it, is far worse and more pointless. Why does that exist, again?

Because it was easier to paint a trapezoid on the ice than an outline of Brodeur's sister-in-law to make that rule explicit?

Because fark Brodeur and the Devils, that's why.

As you know, Devils fans and Bettman have a rich, long history together. Speaking of people who should sing "I Got You Babe" together...

So stoked that karaoke has caught on with you guys. One of my favorite hobbies. Could be going to my local haunt (which is a bar that has been featured on paranormal state, so the term applies on many levels) tonight, but I'm trying to cut down my intake, and get in shape, so I haven't been going regularly for months.

I'd say I have an average to above average Baritone/Baritenor. Maybe a little Eddie Vedder with some 3 Doors Down mixed in.

My faves are "Over My Head" by The Fray, "Zoot Suit Riot", "Easy Money", Billy Joel and my showstopper is "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling". I can do some rap ok too.

2012-05-10 06:33:15 PM

I'm going to have to find something I guess, because I promised by best friend when I'm out in June that we'd go do it. Inspired by Cat's Meow. She's not going to let me get away with not singing. :D We used to sing together in high school shows, so maybe we can find a duet.

Oh god....she sang that with a guy at our high school graduation :D I dunno how well that'd go over. It'd work tho, I have a low voice and she's a soprano.

Heh, yeah. My thoughts too. I'm guessing it'll get livelier as the west coast people wander in and east coast people get done with family stuff. I have no life, so....yeah.
