Jackson Herring: That's nothing, you guys should hear what he did to his poor son, Bapp.

...1 month later he was found by police licking ice cream off a bum. He was never reported missing.

Pocket Ninja: The next step, of course, is finding Mitt Romney making any sort of statement on bullying. It's been enough of a topic these past few months that there has to be something from the campaign. Then, in his next interview, quote that statement and ask whether his previous experience as a bully at all informed his current views. Sit back, enjoy.

The problem is, he will sit there, look you right in the eye, and lie his ass off and say he doesn't recall it happening. Even if you cite the accounts of the other corroborating witnesses, he will feign a little mild outrage at the suggestion he is lying -- not too much, because of the subject he doesn't want you to think he has an out of control temper -- look straight into the camera and earnestly repeat his denial.

Because he is a sociopath, and has learned to mimic human emotions fairly effectively, some people may actually believe it.

I would never vote for this Romney douchebag, but what he did as an idiot kid 50 years ago is pretty farking far down the list of reasons why.

GAT_00: That's how high school works. If you weren't actually doing anything, I wouldn't judge you for that.

Besides, Rmoney has protested FOR war and getting Americans killed in a futile gesture. I'm sure he was as bully, however preppy assholes bully others. Probably mocking that your suit only cost $500 or something. Physical violence would be beneath him, he'd pay others to do that.

Yeah, here's a picture of Mittens at Stanford in 1966, protesting in support of the Vietnam war, at a time when he managed to get himself exempted from the draft as a result of his status as a Mormon missionary:

a.abcnews.go.com

And if that isn't bad enough, note that he is walking around a San Francisco Bay Area university campus, in the 1960s fer Chrissake, wearing farking yachting wear!! What kind of a putz did that on a Bay Area campus in 1966? I mean, even the other Young Republicans protesting with him were wearing shorts and casual shirts

what_now: vernonFL: TsarTom: vernonFL: I won't judge Romney. I did some pretty horrible things in high school.

You attempted to sexually humiliate men who you perceived as weak?

No, but I stood and watched and laughed when it happened to other people, hoping I wouldn't be the next victim.

This. I don't think I ever took part in any active bullying, but I certainly never stopped it. High school...is an awful time. Most people can look back at some part of their behavior with shame.

There are a thousand reasons not to vote for Romney. Dredging up stuff like this won't convince any moderates to vote against him.

I would agree if Romney were to give a full-throated condemnation of his behavior. That would place it in the realm of an irrelevant adolescent mistake.

But Romney won't do that. He "has no memory of participating in these incidents." He won't even deny it, despite the numerous 1st person sources. The important point is that you can draw a thread from this bullying directly to his current anti-marriage equality and anti-civil union stances. He's still bullying today and so his past actions on the matter are relevant.

There's a difference between a denial and having "no memory" of the events. Romney isn't even denying the events because he doesn't want to lie--at least not in a way that can be proven.

I really hate to say it, but lots of people did stupid shiat in high school. And a lot of people have had their views and such change since then. Don't get me wrong, Romney is a dickhole, but of all my complaints with his candidacy this is nowhere near on the list.

I voted for Obama once and I'll vote for him again, but let's not pretend Obama hasn't played both sides of the marriage fence for political convenience.

Yeah but as someone who was bullied in high school, let me just say that you never forget what was done to you, and I doubt Romney lost a night of sleep over the shiat he has done to other people over the course of his sociopathic career. If anything Romney just graduated to become an even bigger asshole out of high school.

Oh, I'm aware. I went through six years of it (6th-12th). Took me years to try to attain the social skills I was denied and I'm still not super comfortable in social situations, but I've learned to (mostly) forgive. I think the nature of Romney's life of privilege and insulation has likely warped his mind a bit to where he might actually believe some of the dumb shiat he says. I just don't like this whole "Romney would slit your gay throat, Obama would slice your wedding cake for you" canard.

Dusk-You-n-Me: My cautious, provisional take is that this portrait of the youthful Romney does suggest a man who grew up taking for granted the comforts of wealth and prestige. I don't blame him for accepting the anti-gay assumptions of his era. The story does give the sense of a man who lacks a natural sense of compassion for the weak. His prankery seems to have invariably singled out the vulnerable - the gay classmate, the nearly blind teacher, the nervous day student racing back to campus. It's entirely possible to grow out of that youthful mentality - to learn to step out of your own perspective, to develop an appreciation for the difficulties faced by those not born with Romney's many blessings. I'm just not sure he ever has. Link

This has no bearing one way or the other for my. The fact that he is a bully today is what is significant.

Yeah, I don't understand that argument. If anything it would have likely made the turnout for it even stronger along with accusations that he's trying to manipulate the vote.

Obama was pushed into this by Biden's comments. That's it.

Way to miss the entire farking point.

This was a complete act. If the whole thing is that he actually thinks it should be this way, why say it now? Its all for political gain, not because he actually believes it. Otherwise he would have said so before re-election, he would have said so 3 days ago to try to sway a rejection of NC 1. I'd bet a fair bit of money that if NC 1 had failed, he wouldn't have said this. It has nothing to do with doing what's right and everything to do with politics. He's just as bad as those few Republicans who 'suddenly' realize bashing gay people is bad because they might not get re-elected. I despise those people and I despise the President for the same reason.

Good on you all for buying the act. The President enjoyed the fundraising.
