What a shock. A guy from rich, powerful, family who never had to answer for anything and could do whatever he wanted, thought everyone should think the way he does and was a bully.

If you are Gay and a Republican politician holds you down to forcibly do something to you it probably isn't going to be cutting your hair.

so does this make Romney a gay hairstylist?

I'd love to find more things to hold against Romney, but I'm not sure how truthful a random high school story by some guy that just came out of the woodwork is...

So Mitt Romney committed a hate crime.

The next step, of course, is finding Mitt Romney making any sort of statement on bullying. It's been enough of a topic these past few months that there has to be something from the campaign. Then, in his next interview, quote that statement and ask whether his previous experience as a bully at all informed his current views. Sit back, enjoy.

If this is going to become standard, then we might as well bring up stuff from Obama's childhood as well.

The incident was recalled similarly by five students, who gave their accounts independently of one another. Four of them - Friedemann, now a dentist; Phillip Maxwell, a lawyer; Thomas Buford, a retired prosecutor; and David Seed, a retired principal - spoke on the record. Another former student who witnessed the incident asked not to be named.

In a year when gay kids are killing themselves left and right because of bullying, let's elect a homophobic bully President. Makes sense.....for America. And for those who say "Give me a break, he was a teenager then" the last time I checked he was against gay marriage or any rights for gays. Obviously he still feels the same way he did in high school.

Romney don't you go and cut his hair. Do you think it's gonna make him change? He's just a boy with a new haircut and that's a pretty nice haircut.

My cautious, provisional take is that this portrait of the youthful Romney does suggest a man who grew up taking for granted the comforts of wealth and prestige. I don't blame him for accepting the anti-gay assumptions of his era. The story does give the sense of a man who lacks a natural sense of compassion for the weak. His prankery seems to have invariably singled out the vulnerable - the gay classmate, the nearly blind teacher, the nervous day student racing back to campus. It's entirely possible to grow out of that youthful mentality - to learn to step out of your own perspective, to develop an appreciation for the difficulties faced by those not born with Romney's many blessings. I'm just not sure he ever has. Link

You know, politics aside, I take this one personally. I had weird hair in the small town I grew up in the early '80s. shiat like this? Endless. Cops, parents, teachers? Never saw a thing.

At least it taught me how to fight dirty.

Romney's campaign song should be changed to "Beauty School Dropout".

I too did some pretty horrible things in high school. They were to people who did this kind of crap to defenseless kids. I was sort of the Dexter of bullies.

The really sad thing is that this will hurt Romney with the teabagger crowd because he didn't kill the kid.

Romney was for bullying before he was against it.

2012-05-10 11:41:50 AM
I know tons of bullies in high school who have since changed drastically and don't like their former selves. High school is a highly emotional time, lots of people are stupid, and a lot of people change in many regards post-HS. Of course he's still against gay rights, and that and his fiscal ideas are why I'm not voting for him, but it's never going to have anything to do with how we he acted as a teenager in high school.

I'm gay and have had to deal with my share of homophobes, but I've also had bullies from high school come back to me and say "I'm sorry, man. I was a stupid insecure asswipe back then and you're a pretty cool guy."

Just my two cents.

That school, and in fact that whole area if Michigan, is extremely insular. People don't discuss what happens, and things like this are felt with internally by the parents. It's not surprising that this was never brought up simply because anyone that talked would be ostracized personally and professionally.

/cousin is a former student and now administrator there

Follow up, Romney apologizes for what he doesn't recall doing

"Back in high school, I did some dumb things and if anybody was hurt by that or offended, obviously I apologize for that," Romney said in a live radio interview with Fox News Channel personality Brian Kilmeade. Romney added: "I participated in a lot of hijinks and pranks during high school and some might have gone too far and for that, I apologize."

Romney said the incident involving cutting the hair of John Lauber, whom some students suspected was gay, occurred "a long time ago."

"I don't remember that incident," Romney said, laughing. "I certainly don't believe that I thought the fellow was homosexual. That was the furthest thing from our minds back in the 1960s, so that was not the case."

Asked specifically about having interrupting a closeted gay student in English class, Gary Hummel, by shouting, "Atta girl!" Romney said, "I really can't remember that."

I'm not sure about electing a man with so many memory recall problems, instead of bombing 5 countries we'll end up bombing the same country 5 times!

and at least one of the men involved in the incident since has, Romney however will not acknowledged the incident even occurred. The guy who was bullied has since passed away, so Romney doesn't even have to look him in the face

Pretty much.

I don't have any confidence at all that Romney is any more genuine, any more compassionate, any more introspective or any more intelligent than he was in high school.

This. I don't think I ever took part in any active bullying, but I certainly never stopped it. High school...is an awful time. Most people can look back at some part of their behavior with shame.

There are a thousand reasons not to vote for Romney. Dredging up stuff like this won't convince any moderates to vote against him.

That's how high school works. If you weren't actually doing anything, I wouldn't judge you for that.

Besides, Rmoney has protested FOR war and getting Americans killed in a futile gesture. I'm sure he was as bully, however preppy assholes bully others. Probably mocking that your suit only cost $500 or something. Physical violence would be beneath him, he'd pay others to do that.
