CSB time...

I remember playing legion ball in HS against a team with a female at 2nd base. I think just about everyone did what they could to hit at her. I even batted lefty to hit one at her.

Good times.

Pre-season
School A: Hey everyone, just an heads up, but we don't believe in playing against girls. It is a belief thing. Is that an issue?
School B: Nah, we cool.

Season
School B: oh, you know that whole "no girls" thing? yeah, we got a girl now.
School A: We haven't changed our beliefs.
School B: We cool, she'll sit out.
School A: Ok. Play ball!

Post-season
School B: The girl is going to play this time.
School A: Really? Ok, well, our beliefs are still the same; so we are just going to forfiet.
School B: WHAT?! Let's call the newspaper!

Sorry, the religious school is not in the wrong here.

Fair enough, there are other christians besides protestants and catholics. This group wouldn't fit the definition of protestant even if the group left the church in protest of vatican II.

But Our Lady of Sorrows, a fundamentalist Catholic school in Phoenix that lost twice to Mesa Prep during the regular season, chose to forfeit the championship game rather than play a team fielding a female player.

I'm not interested in parsing the Byzantine bullshiat that people dredge up around their Bronze-age belief systems to fully understand what particular subtribe the latest group of religious morans to make fools of themselves on the national stage belongs to.

That there is the guy that runs the Greek Orthodox church, a bunch of Catholics not beholden to the Pope. They call him the Patriarch. He is as Catholic as they get, seeing as how they trace their heritage to Constantinople when Constantine told everyone on Earth they were now Catholic. I hear he even shiats in the woods. He rolls by the Vatican every now and again for a consult.

Our Lady of Sorrows is run by the U.S. branch of the Society of Saint Pius X, a group of conservative, traditionalist priests who disagree with the reforms of the Vatican II Council in the 1960s and broke with the Catholic Church in the 1980s.

So much for the unity of the Catholic Church. I thought only us Protestants were supposed to do stuff like that.

While certain christian sects may consider themselves catholics, that is not how the term is used or understood in common usage. While quite anecdotal, I have never heard someone call themselves or someone else catholic when the didn't mean roman catholic. I see methodists consider themselves catholics, yet I have never heard a methodist use catholic to describe themselves or some other methodist. Likewise to greek orthodox. I see their are others but I have no experience with those other sects.

Goddam it, religious people are such pains in the ass.

FTFA: "During Mesa Prep's two previous games with Our Lady of Sorrows, Paige didn't play out of respect for the opposing team's beliefs ...."

See, that was obviously a mistake. It gave them the impression that there religious beliefs were at all relevant here.

And this: "I respect their views, but it's a bit out of the 18th century," said Mesa Prep athletic director Amy Arnold, who is the only woman now coaching a boys high-school football team in Arizona.

I wish one person would have the stones to say, "Their beliefs are stupid. We're not going to accommodate them. If they want to play in a league that excludes girls, that's their right, but ours doesn't, so they forfeit, and that's fine with me. If they had declined to participate in our league from the beginning, they could have saved us all a lot of trouble, but they didn't, because they want everyone to accommodate them, but don't believe they should have to make any accommodations for anybody else. They're selfish."

But nobody does. Our constant pandering to the nutjob religious assholes in this country has given them the idea that everybody HAS to accommodate them, no matter what. No matter how nonsensical their objections, no matter how inconvenient it is to everyone else, all somebody has to do is mention religion, and various authorities crap their pants in fear of offending the religious people, but don't seem to have a problem offending the rest of us. The majority of us who are not religious nutjobs.

Donnchadha: Technically they aren't Catholic.

Technically the were Catholic for a goodly while, and only split in the recent past ("recent" with respect to the age of the modern Catholic church). Claiming they're not Catholic is like claiming the Missouri Synod is not Luthern because they're not part of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America -- it's technically true, but it's an apologist's distinction.

The Catholic church was fully in-line with these guys until just a few decades ago, and even today most of the leaders of the Catholic church hold similar views on women. The Catholic church still has strict rules about what roles are appropriate for women, does not believe women should have control over their own fertility (and I'm not talking about abortion), etc. The fact that the "official" Catholic church (presumably) wouldn't object in this specific instance is certainly a step in the right direction, but let's not pretend the Catholic church has turned the corner on women's rights since these guys broke away.

We're talking about two very different things. School B neither agreed nor objected to anything. School A asked: "yo, you got any chicks on your team?" to which School B replied: "nope."
