Always a sad thing.
If their allegations are true then the Scouts should pay up big.
There are programs in place now, but in the 70's not so much.
Also stop waiting 30 years or more to sue institutions.

It's so parallel to the Catholic Church thing. They'll blame gays and take no accountability for the criminals in their midst.

Probably. Let's hope that the Boy Scouts receive less institutional judicial protection than the Catholic Church. Lots of those law suits went exactly nowhere.

I think I'm long overdue to send my Eagle badge into BSA and ask to be taken off the rolls. Between this and the anti-gay and anti-atheist policies they keep propping up, I've lost all use for them in my personal history.

Which sucks, because I still remember all my knots.

How did the boy scouts turn out to be so awful while the girl scouts are a bastion of progressive intelligence?

Seriously, I always assumed the girl scouts were just as terrible, but apparently they're awesome?

Because I learned so much in Scouts I was eager to sign my jid up when he was old enough to be a cub about 5 years ago. I walked out of the organizational meeting and relaized we were never coming back. The derp being thrown around in there that night made me realize the Scouts were no longer the organization I had once been a part of. I've since learned that in a deliberate push in the early 90's the Scouts were basically taken over by extreme elements of the Southern Baptist convention and most especially, the Mormon church. IT went up on my list with the NRA as "organizations that did good things for me as a kid but I will have nothing to do with now.".

It is sad though because while I try to pass on the skills Ihave, there really is no organization to turn to as a scouting alternative. Maybe it's time to found one...

I don't know about all girl scout camps, but the one I volunteer at is pretty goddamn awesome and fun.

/Then again, I know the director of said camp, and she's one of the reasons said camp is awesome.

Considering they're always getting flamed in the media for teaching girls to be independent and undermining bigotry, I like the organization a lot. My wife and I saw this 'Now you're a teenager!' book that the girl scouts put out and flipped through it expecting to be horrified. All of the information in it was incredibly positive, accurate, and healthy.

I'm sure some of the individual camps are crappy, but the umbrella seems to really have its shiat together.

This wouldn't be a problem if those kids hadn't been so gay. They really needs to screen the children better--there's a 'no homos' in place for a reason--to protect people from this happening.

Shop around. No two troops are alike, but I think you want to stick with either a secular chartering org (like an American Legion post) or one of the mainline protestant churches (Methodist). I agree with you that the LDS units have quite a bit of influence in some councils and can seriously warp the experience.

Keep in mind that each Troop is different. I hear all the BSA hate, but the troops in my area (with a couple of extremely religious troops) have all been pretty cool and focused on teaching future leaders, and not bogged down in political/religious/social extremism.

Scouting is what you make of it. I hope you don't get turned off of the entire organization because of some bad apples

Please name one national institution for children and young adults that doesn't have this problem. I think one of the main problems with this kind of situation is parents not talking with their kids about the bad people in the world who pull this kind of crap, no pun intended, and keeping an eye out for bad behavior. You know, taking responsibility for you kids.

As for the tolerence issues, I think it all depends on the Troop/Council your child is involved with. Yes, National has it's rules but they don't really apply to me or my son and his Troop is religiously tollerant. I think my son has learned valuble life skills and has made some excellent friends through Scouting. Our experience has been nothing but positive.

Go ahead and flame on haters, again pun not intended, Scouting has been good for my son! All he has is his project and he'll have his Eagle rank and I couldn't be more proud of him!

Agreed on shopping around. Even within councils, there are troops which aren't afraid to play by the LDS rules. My old troop, Troop 5 at First Presby in Charleston, WV. was chartered back in 1917 and the scoutmaster wasn't going to let the pussification and bigoted bull-crap carry through to our troop. We bucked the council at every move and turned out more eagles than any other two troops combined. As an eagle and someone who is hoping to have kids soon, I'm going to do my part to take scouting back by becoming a leader who takes the BS out of the BSA.
