Shawarma (or shawerma as this place calls it) has saved my life. If you're hung over in the SF bay area, do yourself a favor and go there.

Plus, they wrap them in foil there. +1

The place (used to be Ali Baba, now... something else) next to Toronado has saved me a few times.

So trendy people are scarfing up shawarma because it was shown in The Avengers...that explains why the local Zankou Chicken restaurant has been really crowded lately.

Never had shawarma until I went to Jerusalem. Tried it on my first day and literally had it minimally twice a day for the next two weeks. Haven't been able to find a recipe or restaurant that comes close. Will give this a try, but I'm not going to get my hopes up.

If you're ever in Houston, try the chicken shawarmas at Phoenicia Deli. I've been eating there since the mid-80's, and they are phenomenal.

They guy who introduced me to the place had worked in the awl binnis in the Middle East, and said the ones at Phoenicia were comparable to the ones he ate there. I believe him, but hope to find out for myself one day.

Shawarma is simply the best post-drinking food ever, bar none.

This is the greatest argument for those who oppose multiculturalism. Because if you do not enjoy food, then you, sir, may as well be dead.

At this point the Greek restaurants are so far and few between and the Lebanese shawarma shops more plentiful then macdonalds'(ses?) that it was a pretty natural transition.

Where I'm from, we call that doner. Tomayto, tomahto, I guess. My local doner and kebab shop follows recipes that are Turkish by way of Germany.

You're welcome :)

I've been trying for years to get one of Titli's videos posted here. I was about ready to give up until I saw the Avengers.

didn't she say "since their thinly sliced, you don't want to cook (the chicken) for very long"

then "10 to 12 minutes" until the liquid was gone... Thats some farking dry ass-chicken there!

We have them here in SLO where I live, but whenever I get one they don't stand up to the memory of the first one I tried at Truly Med... Maybe it was the fact that I felt like a sack of fried buttholes and I had it alongside a cold pint of Sierra but I still make an effort to go there when I'm in the area.

Can't believe people need a movie to teach them about a shawarma.

I've downed more than my fair share.

To be fair, I don't think I've ever eaten a kebab and thought "that's some juicy chicken there".

I do not care for the video. I came to say only this:

Shawarma... I miss you. I miss you so much.
Your tender marinated meat... the juices flowing from top to bottom on that vertical rotisserie,
shaving the best damn part of that meat off and slapping it on some fresh pita...

Damn I miss getting those in the Middle East. (Kuwait City mostly).

I'd vote for a shawarma. D-licious.

A shawarma is a doner kebap is a gyros. The Mexican Tacos al Pastor is a variant using tortillas and different saucing. (Wikipedia has 3 different articles under the different names of the same thing)

All of them involve cooking the meat on a rotating vertical spit and slicing off portions.

upload.wikimedia.org

What crazy lady presents is a bastard version where the meat is sliced before it is cooked in a frying pan.

Seen in terms of beef sandwiches on rolls her version is more like a Philly steak (sliced then cooked) than an Italian beef (cooked then sliced).

I used to work down the street from Phoenicia on Westheimer. I'd eat shawarma twice a week there, and it was indeed phenomenal.
