has the same name as a grown-up suspected terrorist but that entry on the no-fly list has no birth date

EIghteen-month-old Riyanna

Rihanna's father was flabbergasted.

So, the father of pop sensation Rihanna was upset about this for some reason?

I hate babies on flights as much as the next traveler, but I hate the TSA more.

Maybe if they decide to do a fondle-grope search on an 18 month old, THAT will be lower. But there's not much more room for descent.

Note: Boarding passes were issued, so they passed the automatic DHS check against the list. JetBlue was the entity that called them back, for reasons unknown.

When asked how a 18 month old child could possibly pose a security risk, a TSA spokesman replied, "Those terrorists are pretty sneaky."

Pair-o-Dice: Is it mandatory that TSA agents take the short bus to work?

Hey, I've met lots of people with developmental disabilities, and often they are kind, charitable, excessively-trusting people that would do whatever they could to help you to the best of their limited abilities.

Contrasted with these people...

This jumped out at me too.

The TSA says they already had boarding passes and that would mean they were not on the no-fly list.

My guess is that they were yanked because someone working for the airline didn't want them on the plane because muslim.

2012-05-10 10:56:52 AM
I have been assured that the "no-fly" list only includes names of actual suspected terrorists, and that as such the list is suitable for denying individuals Constitutionally protected liberties without the benefit of due process.

Eventually, the child's parents said they were told they could reboard the plane though they added that nobody offered an apology or even an explanation for what happened. The family refused to get back on the plane because they were embarrassed. They chose instead to leave the airport

As much as I hate the TSA and wish they would all DIAF...I am gonna take their side on this. The noticed a name on the no fly list. Got the family off the plane. Found out the no-flyer was a baby. And in a stunning display of competence (for the TSA) cleared them to get back on the plane in only 30 minutes (Again, for the TSA that is simply amazing).

The family decided their feelings were all butthurt, and chose to be all sour grapes about it. The TSA recognised they made an error and corrected it. The family are the ones making a mecca out of a molehill.

This is one of those days that I am proud to be an American. Where else can complaints from the public about an inept bureaucracy actually bring about positive change? If the TSA had just been actually providing a valuable service from the beginning, I don't think nearly as many people would be complaining about them. Anyway, better late than never with dealing with kids on planes.

Keep up the good work fellas.

NutWrench: When asked how a 18 month old child could possibly pose a security risk, a TSA spokesman replied, "Those terrorists are pretty sneaky."

What makes me sad is that it actually is possible that a baby could pose a risk, through no action of its own, if someone with the baby in custody chose to use the baby as a mule for moving materiel through security.

That being said, I think that we can draw the line with the baby going through the metal detector in a parent or guardian's arms, and let the explosives-sniffing dogs milling about the airport catch any nonmetallic threat that the detector didn't pick up. I'm willing to risk it beyond that.

Why do some sites insist on putting articles on several pages? Is that a remnant of when pages took forever to load? Are they trying to up their page view numbers to sell advertising space?

2012-05-10 11:06:08 AM
They don't need to ban babies from airline flights. They just need to ban the screaming and the pooping.

So, the TSA should just pass a rule providing for mandatory gag balls and poop corks for all infants and children. Problem solved.

They're trying to get more ad pageloads. It brings in more revenue that way.

Of course, because of that we now use adblockers in our browsers. When ads were just one or two and were not totally obnoxious I didn't feel a need to block them, but now that they're so asinine, buh bye!

Except it looks like no one is taking responsibility for the eff up...

FTFA"WPBF contacted JetBlue and was told this was an issue with the Transportation Safety Administration. JetBlue also said both it and the TSA are investigating the incident.

But the TSA disagreed, telling WPBF this is an airline issue and therefore, it is not investigating. The TSA also said that since Riyanna and her parents were issued boarding passes, that means they had been cleared by the TSA and were definitely not on the no-fly list."
(emphasis mine)

Both Jet Blue and TSA are pointing their fingers at each other and saying it's the other guys fault, and they have to fix whatever caused this to go wrong.

If someone took responsibility, I'd agree with you guys, but it looks like no one is.

/Sounds like Jet Blue messed up and it deflecting onto the easiest target

I think everyone under the age of 4 should be banned from airplanes.

Also, if you have a child, and it cries or won't shut up, both you and the child get tazed by an air marshall.

Um, you'd think that, and I know this is insane and all, but try to stay with me here, the TSA could tell that an 18-month-old is not going to be a terrorist. I know that they're "not allowed to racially profile", but they should be able to have an idea of the age of the suspected terrorist so's they can stop these false-positives from shiatting egg all over their faces.

I'm sorry, but the TSA, or whomever decided to yank them off the flight, farked up. And yeah, I'd be damned embarrassed if I got pulled off a plane and displayed like a side of beef for half an hour.

In other words: eat a dick.

There was another version of this story on TF last night. It basically said JetBlue yanked the family off the flight because the name matched the no-fly list and the TSA took one look at the kid and cleared them to go back on. The half hour wait was probably for the TSA person to walk from one end of the airport to the other.

/At least the TSA will reward me with sex for white knighting them.
