History teaches us that the best we can hope for is Sheriff Joe skates into retirement and a few deputies get hammered

This is a political move by the DoJ. Pretty shamful actually since this will obviously not lead anywhere. Seems like obama will use any means to get reelected this year. Sheriff Joe is a patriot who is defending his country.

The War on Drugs is organized civil rights violation. Pot, Kettle, Black? DOJ needs to clean up its own messes first. Not to mention Mr. Holder's former Law Firm have clients like Goldman, JPMorgan, Citi, Wells Fargo, Deutsche Bank & and is protecting them trillions in theft and fraud.

rufus-t-firefly: Yeah, "human" rights aren't for ALL humans, are they?

I don't think it's a matter of abdicating your human rights so much as, if you're running around committing hateful, ugly heinous crimes that deprive people of their property, their dignity and perhaps even their lives, you sort of abdicated your humanity.

Because Civil rights and treating prisoners better than a Chinese gulag is just a matter of "us versus them." You know what other group of people were in favor beating and robbing non-nationals?

LordJiro: Brilliant. The DoJ pokes the Republican crazies with the stick on the same night Obama comes out for gay marriage. So, when the birthers inevitably get loud and possibly in the news, it'll remind independents who might be put off by gay marriage that the Republicans are full of batshiat.

WTF, You say?

Can you chew gum and walk at the same time?

Gyrfalcon: I have never heard of a sheriff's department being indicted as a corrupt organization under RICO. I'm delighted to learn it can be done. I was under the impression it was hard to do, since it never seems to be done to bring down the gangs that everyone frets about here in Los Angeles. I'd have thought RICO would be the best way to nail those thugs.

From Wikipedia: "In June 1984, the Key West Police Department in Monroe County, Florida, was declared a criminal enterprise under the federal RICO statutes after a lengthy United States Department of Justice investigation. Several high-ranking officers of the department, including Deputy Police Chief Raymond Cassamayor, were arrested on federal charges of running a protection racket for illegal cocaine smugglers.[11] At trial, a witness testified he routinely delivered bags of cocaine to the Deputy Chief's office at City Hall.[12]"

2012-05-09 09:00:04 PM

Gyrfalcon: MorrisBird: Gyrfalcon: They'd have to prove there was some racketeering and/or corrupt ORGANIZATION (besides the sheriff's office) going on, and that's a tough nut to make.

I'm going to disagree with you on that. RICO is incredibly easy to establish. And, I don't know why you're excluding the sheriff's office as a corrupt organization. Have you ever been involved in a criminal RICO action? Because, I have.

Wow, you're in the Mafia? I'm impressed. ;)

I have never heard of a sheriff's department being indicted as a corrupt organization under RICO. I'm delighted to learn it can be done. I was under the impression it was hard to do, since it never seems to be done to bring down the gangs that everyone frets about here in Los Angeles. I'd have thought RICO would be the best way to nail those thugs.

Genuine question: If it's not hard to do, why isn't it done more often?

I think Rico is under used. All it requires is an organization planning a crime, and actually having done it. Then all in the organization can be charged with said crime. It is tough to make iron clad though.

Cyberluddite: An easier way to get him would be to make it a federal crime to be a huge attention whore. If it were, that farktard would be such a repeat offender that he would probably be subject to the death penalty.

Prosecutorial discretion. Honestly, what they did to my client was unabashedly evil. It was so easy for them. Of course, we ended up getting $30 million on the civil action, and my client did 9 months in jail.

Public drunkenness is illegal. Therefore,we need to harass sober people who look like they might be the type to have gotten drunk at some point in the past, and throw people who we suspect were actually drunk into cages outside during summer in the desert. Right? I mean, committing a crime justifies any punishment, right?

Perhaps none at all. I don't know. I didn't say that Sheriff Joe wasn't a brass plated sonofab*tch. I said that there are people in prisons who DID do the things I described and that, upon release, will probably do it again and that they can suck a wet fart of my ass about their human rights. And Sheriff Joe can get into the line with them.

But that was in 1984. Still doesn't answer my question: Why don't they do it more often? What's holding them back?

And even if the feds don't use it on cops out of some misplaced professional courtesy, why not go after the gangbangers? It would a) keep them out of the state prisons (which could use the break), b) really hit the drug trade where it would hurt and do some actual good, instead of sweeping up street level dealers and users all the time, and c) make the ghettos and barrios a lot better places to live. It almost makes you want to believe in conspiracy theories about the FBI and drugs in the inner cities.

I would be willing to have some Bastard on tap. Would never say no to that. For what ever reason I never acquired the taste for hoppy stuff or for Belgian ales. Though I will drink the hoppy stuff if no other choice, I have found the Belgian stuff a bit too stinky for my tastes. It's doubtful I'd find Bastard on tap anywhere near here (far north of Chicago where every thing is Sam 'puke' Adams.

"Hey! DOJ sucks!".... "NO! Sheriff Joe is a douche!"... does that about sum it up so far?
