Janusdog: Forgot_my_password_again: Ricardo Klement: The GOP was on the wrong side of history in 1860?

The "GOP" (modern usage) didn't oppose slavery, they opposed the spread of slavery to new territories because it would give the southern slave block in congress even more power (the 3/5 clause gave them additional seats for people not really represented).

OMG I love you. A fellow history buff with good knowledge and not armchair Civil War refereeing.

The problem, of course, is that this wasn't just random. The entire point was that without expansion of slavery, congress would be able to make it illegal. It's only looking at the short-run to say that their sole aim was to limit expansion without examining why the two sides found the issue worth fighting over.

People always take a jaded stance towards these things but I really do think that Shep is and has been genuine these past couple of years and is not just positioning himself for another job. When I caught parts of his show a few years back he just seemed like a smug jerk, nothing worth mentioning, but IMO he's shown that he has a lot of integrity.

They could be out there promoting safe sex for homosexuals and get that life expectancy improved. But no, they'll keep bashing homosexuals and force the closeted ones to continue resorting to unsafe means to get their rocks off.

I'd invite them to read the CSA constitution vs the US constitution as well as a few documents written by the New and Improved Founding Fathers on the matter. But I doubt they'd read them.

Not to get argumentative, but notice that the Union's reason for going to war was NOT about slavery, even if the South's was.

Yep. The Union Army was fighting to preserve the Union. Not a single star was removed from the flag during the Civil War (and one was added when the western part of Virginia seceded from the secessionists to rejoin the Union)

/the South was fighting for State's Rights (to keep n****rs as livestock)

Guess which party's president desegregated the military shortly after WW2. Hint -- it was the same guy who gave the go-ahead to end the war by dropping nukes.

The Democrats who were against equal rights weren't too keen on this, so they split off and formed their own party, the Dixiecrat Party. Bigoted Democrats were gradually leaving the Democratic Party and joining the Dixiecrats until the Republicans took them in as part of the Southern Strategy -- they've been together ever since.

Of course it's not a slur, it's a statement of fact--he's as much in a glass closet as Anderson Cooper is. While he hasn't ever come out officially, he's never made an effort to deny it even as everybody and their brother talk about it as though it's settled public information. Heck, when you're making a gay magazine's list of the most powerful gays in America for several years running and don't object to the categorization, it's definitely in the category of "so open a secret that you can't really call it a secret anymore."

Hey, if you are cnn/msnbc and are willing to pay him enough/give him good enough benefits so he can afford violate the NDA he's probably signed and lose pensions/etc, you basically have the Fox Mole, but with actual information that could harm them, on your payroll. Shep Smith is right.

Obama and Biden and the Dems are on the right side of history and morality on this.

The GOP at their upper levels probably don't really care about the issue except in that it has been a winner for them as a divisive social wedge issue. When they drop it because it has become more of a liability than an asset they will just move on to being wrong about some new thing because that's who they are, that's what they do.

I really hope FOX fires Shep at some point so he goes out and gets a job with a real news organization.
