Nice headline, subby!

The offshore folks we worked with always confused some of the onshore folks at one account I worked at (they didn't have much experience with India) - and one of the biggest "complaints" was what does "Please kindly do the needful." even mean!?

I'm surprised it took this long to devalue. You can find those things frakkin' EVERYWHERE. In the grass, in clay pots, under rocks....

A lot of them don't say this anymore. Even the new guys we work with don't say this to us. Among themselves? Maybe.

Hell, a lot of IT and networking folks I deal with through work say, "do the needful" all the time. People of all races. I'd thought it just became an IT cliche.

Example: "Our circuit is down. Please do the needful."

Everyone knows what they mean.

2012-05-09 11:13:20 PM
"Kindly do the needful and revert immediately".

I still get this when I deal with India.

Fun fact: "do the needful" was a pretty common English phrase in the 18th/19th century. It fell out of fashion everywhere but India.

If I had a nickel for every time I heard that phrase early in my career... I'd have enough to outsource myself an esecretary.

under rocks, in pots.. heck, just cutting grass

I never hear that one, outside of fark threads about weird Indian phrases.

The one I did hear was "Keep it Back" instead of "Put it away" It gave me pause every time I heard it.

It only took a beat to get what was meant, but the phrasing and my mental parser, they just never lined up quick for that.

I got an e-mail just last week asking me to kindly do the needful, so I'm getting a kick out of these replies.

Center square? Nah, his shop was on the second floor next to Famous Footwear.

Crudbucket: I got an e-mail just last week asking me to kindly do the needful, so I'm getting a kick out of these replies.

I had an AT&T customer service manager tell me to do the needful 2 weeks ago.

This is bad news for the U.S. technology workers. What this means is that the rates for Indian IT workers just went down another few dollars per hour. Competing against 3rd world countries sucks.

I've always interpreted "do the needful" as "please do my job for me", but that could just be the quality of some of the contractors where I work.

I still get it from the few offshore folks I deal with, and I'm not in IT proper anymore.

/Please do what is necessary
//"Howdy" messes them up on ALL sorts of levels.
///Great headline subby.

hick_town: I've always interpreted "do the needful" as "please do my job for me", but that could just be the quality of some of the contractors where I work.

That is actually fairly close to what the AT&T rep was doing, since what needed done was to transfer me to the right department and what she wanted me to do was hang up and call back and have someone else transfer me to the right department.

Subby's phrasing is awesome the thing itself.

Warning! You are approaching Poe's Law levels of xenophobic mixed metaphors. Kindly do the needful.
