I was talking to some folks from Australia the other day and they were talking about the Gay Mardi Gras they hold in Sydney. They said that every year, a few politicians make some noise about it, but in the end everyone shuts up because it makes so much money that no one wants to ban it. I don't know what that has to do with anything, but Romney is a flip-flopper.

Can you even imagine what the documentary of Obama's presidency in 20 years will be like? It'll be named "Barack Obama: A Presidency of Trololololol".

[i143.photobucket.com image 620x413]

well, he did need to re-energize his 'disenchanted base'. and did so while simultaneously firing up the spit flecked raging masses of homophobic social conservatives.
trololololo indeed. and perfect timing.
long game, he has it.

MaudlinMutantMollusk: Did you ever have an almost over-powering urge to hunt someone down and slap the living shiat out of them?

Yeah, but I almost feel sorry for Romney: you know he'd love to be able to run as a moderate and crush Obama by saying "Everything Obama's done I did first", and I'm sure the party would like him to run as a moderate as they want to win, but the base has decreed that they want someone from the far right, which means Romney has to disown every position he's every held.

Something similar happened to McCain in 2004 and 2008: he wanted so badly to win he had to give up every ideal that made him a good candidate.

Shaggy_C: Mr. Obama turning an election that should be about the economic extremism of the Tea Party and Romney's cozy relationship with Wall Street into a "culture war" election about the gays while at the same time arguing for tax cuts hikes.

FTFM. The 'third rails' for Democrats are guns, religion, foreign policy, gays, and taxes. Don't talk about them in the general election; if anything, triangulate your position to prove that you're a right winger at heart. It's the opposite of Republicans, who can't talk about Social Security, exploitative big business, healthcare, or race issues.

Shaggy_C: Obama did do himself a disservice with the announcement. While the lib lib lib side of me is happy that he's supporting equality, the practical side of me sees Mr. Obama turning an election that should be about the economic extremism of the Tea Party and Romney's cozy relationship with Wall Street into a "culture war" election about the gays while at the same time arguing for tax cuts. Does he just want to piss away every single state outside of the Northeast and California? This should have been a slam dunk, instead he's just offering up red meat for the Republican base. For someone who ran such an effective 2008 campaign he is really floundering in 2012.

Concern troll much. Obama's position on this is negated with romneys position on this. Obama is one of the best political game players i have seen. Bill clinton wishes he had his ability to stand back and let the oppositiondo the work. Mittens is as serious a challenger as kerri, dukakis, or mondale. And those are just the candidates i actually experienced. Mitt has the problem of his flaws only being ignorable by the base. In actual campaigning he is very vunerable.

intentionally throwing them off the economy, which while still weak, is recovering and he has the upper hand on in the first place no matter how many right wing talking points try to spin it?
now the fundies can go off on this while he focuses on economic issues which will be the decider for indies who mostly couldnt farking care less who bangs who.
he might lose a few swing states he didnt need. according to colorado today, he might have just taken this state.

FreakinB: FirstNationalBastard: Why is it such a virtue in politics to have one opinion and never change that opinion, even though facts and reality show you that your opinion is totally incorrect?

That's what I never understood with the whole "flip-flopper" label. Why is open-mindedness a bad thing?

Of course I don't mean to include people who say whatever they think people want to hear. I'm talking about a legitimate change in a person's opinion.

Really, the "flip-flopper" label is supposed to apply to people who say whatever they think people want to hear; particularly, the type that will change opinions as often as they change clothes, and insist that the opinion they're telling you now is the one they've had their whole life. In other words, Mitt Romney.

However, politics is politics, so the attack dogs try to apply it to any possible change of position, regardless of how ill it fits.

Yeah, I was thinking that as I typed it - though, you have to admit, the militant stance Obama has taken with regards to Al Qaeda is definitely a great example of going to the right of the Republican party to beat them at their own game. That's no traditional Democratic plank!

Perhaps but Obama has shown efficiency in the "War on Terror". And really, the Republican dominance on national security is quite new. It started with Reagan. While that is a lifetime for most it is also a very short time in human and even American history.

/Plus, most of it is perception but I suppose that is all that counts.

The wonderful phrase "conventional wisdom" really represents everything wrong with American politics since the late 1970s. You lost me at "against it before I was for it". You really think Joe Six Pack is going to go to that much detail when making their decision? I'm thinking in best case, the nation ignores the issue since it's largely out of the president's hands; worst case, we get a redux of the 2000 election, where the "faith and values and moderation in all else" beats "moderation".

Careful there...I think there's a certain tendency for those of us on the left to forget that there's actual people out there pulling the levers. Advertising alone doesn't decide elections. I like to give people the benefit of the doubt that they're not just mindless consumers but then again Taco Bell stays in business so I suppose there's some that just can't be helped. I still think the solution is less democracy, not more of it. If you could get people to focus on their local representatives instead of distracting them with talk of foreign policy, macroeconomics, and federal civil rights, you would have a lot stronger democracy. I bet most people can't even name the members of their town council but all of them can tell you why Obama/Romney is an idiot. A shame.

I've been around politics for far too long to get disgruntled, but there are so many people who were new to the game in 2008 I can see why they're surprised that not as much has happened as they'd like. I fully expected the last 3 1/2 years to play out roughly as they have, a lot of people were politically naive and didn't have a clue just how nasty and gridlocked things get.

When ads are 20 to 1 I have no faith. I am thrilled that my people beat the hell out of the fake Dems in Wisconsin but the real Dems don't have the resources to beat the Republicans. Like I said, if the Dems win in the recall my faith will be restored. Everything is stacked against them.

I don't think his last campaign was really so artful; he couldn't close the door on Hillary for months and was running pretty close with McCain (behind for a while, even) up until the economy went into the shiatter. Considering that the Republican brand was absolutely dreadful in 2008, it should have been a complete blowout. It ended up being one in the electoral college, but the popular vote was still a bit close for comfort. I don't get the "Obama is a master campaigner" stuff, I guess. The media really doesn't like him very much.
