"OK then I'd like a check to me for all the money I have in my bank account. Bye bye."

Yep that's what I would say.

Meh, the bank I use in town doesn't accept physical cash by hand any more. They have a machine where you can deposit coins and notes.

Not a big deal as cash isn't a big deal here, and I would expect in Norway, as it is right next door.

Paying with direct bank transfers is completely free, and easy. Your buddy loaned you 300kr for drinks at the bar, or 5000kr for rent? Just transfer it to his account when you have the money. Takes less time then going to deposit it, no need for cash.

Ah, I see, he was looking to deposit dollars, and the machine couldn't do that. Well, there are Bureau de changes all over in Europe.

My credit union only has loan officers and customer service people in the open. If you make a deposit inside it's just like the drive-thru. You send the money or whatever in a tube to a teller that is hidden somewhere, same thing for a withdrawal.

The bank will give you dollars (via machine) but not take them back. Norway will have more and more dollars in circulation until the pressure is too great and something explodes.

Yes, but hopefully they had the machines installed and working before they stopped taking cash over the counter.

You can get US dollars *out* of the machines, so it obviously isn't that uncommon - they should have waited until the new machines were installed and running first.

Of course, sir. With the $75.00 counter check fee plus the $600.00 account closing fee and a $4,000 convenience fee, here is your check for -$10.00.

When you add the $35.00 overdraft fee and $50.00 bad check fee, your total amount comes to -$85.00.

I loan my buddies 200czk for an entire night of beers... or as you would call it in Sweden, a single beer

See, instead I prefer to pay cash and then every month just directly send visa and mastercard a check for 3% of every transaction

That's just a weird attitude--that it's perfectly okay that your customer can't do his transaction with the bank right now. His problem. Too bad.

Twilight zone weird.

That would drive me nuts. I'm one of those people that watches the teller like a hawk when they're counting my money.

Pay cash if the store offers a cash discount.
If there is no cash discount, break out the Visa card and at least get some points or something out of the transaction.

/noticed a lot of gas stations are doing the cash discount thing again

Wouldn't it be more lucrative to withdraw 23000kr out of his account?

"Nordea's Sevang said he understood it wasn't optimal for the customer to have to ask a friend to deposit the dollars in another bank before having the money transferred to his own account."

Did he mention the names of the banks that aren't run by incompetent morons?

LOL, how do you take your money out and put it in a tangible form?

What if we have another 1930 style banking crash? What if no one will honor your cashier's check?

Then we're screwed.

How many people pay their rent/mortgage in greenbacks? utilities/premiums? auto payment/repairs? furniture/appliances? We've already moved away from cash for so many things. At least the non-impoverished among us.

european banks are a bunch of coonts.

i use societe generale in france. most non-ATM transactions can only be done using the branch listed on your checking account, including withdrawing cash. however many branches don't have cash on hand. so if you have a problem with your bank card you are generally farked beyond belief. thank goodness for western union.

what do you plan on seeing?

/ was a teller for a while, back in the day. if you are that concerned about the teller, just count the money once they've given it to you.

Soon, Federal Reserve Bank will be a server sitting in a rack at a data center, running Ubuntu, with Open Office spreadsheet that shows how much money is in each account, and who owes what.

But, they will still have millions in administrative costs.
