And Mitt Romney only recently met with him. Therefore...

Bloomsborg has been pro-gay marriage for a while.

I can see two sides to this issue. One side of this issue says maybe he should do the opposition of the gay marriage because in Leviticus it says this is the wrong thing. The other side of this issue says listen no one is more homosexual than is Ricardo Santorum.

That was almost coherent. New meds?

This must be gay marriage week. North Carolina, Colorado (civil unions), and Obama's statement.

Leviticus also says you can't have tattoo's or eat shellfish. Funny I never hear Republicans talking about banning those things.

well except for the part where Mike came out in support of it first.

Kind of brilliant in a way. The only way for the right to continue with their "I'm more anti-Obama than you" derp race on this one is to essentially out themselves as insufferable bigots and declare that they don't believe in equality under the law.

When the issue is put to a vote, it passes. When it's put in front of a judge, it fails. Coming up with a valid argument on the spot for why gays should not be allowed to be married is an impossible task. The GOP base won't let this die, and the media LOVES civil rights issues. Romney is going to be forced to walk back his staunch opposition, but Obama won't let it die. Romney is going to be hurting from this in the general.

If you legalize gay marriage, it will hurt the economy because of expanded ibsurance coverage and increases in people jointly filing taxes.

I've been seeing this particular gem of derp floating around FB. Has anyone seen it around here? It sounds like Rush or something, but maybe some people are derpy enough to comebup with it on their own.

Altair: It is silly to imply that Obama did this for votes. If anything, this will cost him votes.

I think at worst this will be a wash for him, and that it's probably a net gain at this juncture. I'm sure he polled it to make sure it was safe to, um, come out in favor of gay marriage. But I believe him that his views on this have evolved over the years (since his statements over the years back this up)-it's just the polling shows that this won't hurt him. If it would have hurt him, he would have delayed this announcement until after the election, that's all.

I've seen the liberal opposite of this-if you legalize gay marriage, it'll generate a lot of income for florists and marriage chapels and bridal shops and blah blah blah.

Gay marriage isn't the only issue in the election. Those who staunchly oppose it already oppose the president. Those who staunchly support it have been abandoning the president. By making this an issue, Obama energizes his base, while having no net effect on the opposing base. It's pretty easy to understand when you think about how mobilized the GOP has been since 2007ish. This won't be enough to get them more worked up, not when literally earlier today some of them were calling for open revolution.

When the issue is put to vote at the state level as a referendum vote it has very low visibility and certainly no formal debate.

This issue will be front and center for a while and will be dissected thoroughly. Public opinion on this is going to shift fast; as I said when you are forced to argue for exclusion you fail every single time. The right will not be able to suppress the bigotry and homophobia and it's going to make the GOP look really, really bad.

but lowering taxes stimulates the economy, so i'm told, so this is a plus. if we want to make it revenue neutral i guess we could raise rates at the same time. sounds good to me.

By itself it's probably a wash - although he can fundraise heavily on the issue given that so many of his donors and fundraisers are gay.

In the long run it's a winning campaign strategy for Obama because it forces Romney to stick to a right-wing position when he should be moving to the center. And any time spent debating social issues is a loss for Romney - he should be trying desperately to talk about the economy but so far he has gotten bogged down in talking about terrorism/OBL and now gay rights. Brilliant baiting by the Democrats.

Oh, and finally taking a stand is the right thing to do, which is nice in itself.

It's not even that, it's that after the NC wipe, where nothing could be done about it, the politics are beautiful. As sad as this card was held on to for maximum political capital, it's unfortunately the way Washington works. Especially when one side is so freaking dishonest and destructive.

The GOP is going to be livid. They are going to demand Romney turn the dial up to 12 on this issue, which draws him away from talking about the economy and paints him in a very bad light, beholden to the wacky base. Or he ignores them and they go nuclear. All during a week that should have been Romney 24/7 new cycle about wrapping up / winning some primaries.

Meep Meep.

Biden was a plant. This was a beautiful full court press. The Dem base needs to learn this style of politic, because it's very, very effective in making the other side self destruct and then allows you to actually do the things you want once you get the power.

One must consider voter activation. The so-called "staunch anti-gay rights" voters were highly unlikely to be motivated to show up and vote for Mitt Romney. Now, they almost certainly will.

You're implying that there's actually someone out there, that votes, that was dumb enough to buy into the "support civil unions, no on marriage, but open to evolving" bullshiat. If you can find me that person, please let me know how his one vote matters.

It would be awesome if we started having a national "I am Spartacus" moment. Every person and politician who sides not only with our President, but with history: it's time to stand up. And the best way to address this issue is to make it the next national dialogue.

They were already motivated by Obama's other...well, everything. It really isn't going to do anything but channel their vocal political discontent in a fashion that is advantageous for the administration. They're good at this.
