Seems to me that the word 'marriage' is the root of the problem. So, a proposal:

The only construct recognized by any government - state or federal - is a civil union. Civil unions are available to all citizens regardless of sexual orientation, race, whatever. No laws recognize the word 'marriage' in any way, freeing it up to become a purely religious designation that can be as restrictive and discriminatory as you idiot fundies want it to be.

We get equal protection (for everyone) under the law, fundies get to pat them selves on the back for preserving the holy institution of 'marriage', whatever the helll that means.

Here's my opinion. People who are anti-gay are mostly religious. They fall broadly into two categories: white religious and black religious. Black religious will vote for Obama in high numbers, regardless of his feelings of gay marriage, and he can be a leader to start changing their attitudes about gay rights as civil rights. White religious will vote against Obama in high numbers, regardless.

Now there are some independents and hispanic voters that he could potentially lose, but I really think if he focuses on his accomplishments and lets Romney be Romney, he'll still end up winning. And if not - shame on you America.

Because being more socially liberal through supporting gay marriage probably the best wayto show a greater contrast between himself and Romney without pissing off the 1%. It helps mobilize the democratic voters without actually doing anything for the poor and middle class (taxes and regulations against the 1%, job creation, defending and strengthening the social safety net, etc.)

EnviroDude: Still looking for the answer to "What is the purpose of marriage".

put down your agendas and give it a whirl

Dyads are inherently stronger social forms than individuals or inline temporal partnering ("serial monogamy"). Regardless of the gender of the marital partnership, a socially approved dyad strengthens the social bond of the society, improves survivability of the unit, and tends to maintain the status quo more strongly than temporary pairings or nonmarital (non-sanctioned) bonding. Encouraging dyadic marriage between adults of whatever gender is an inherently conservative social form. Encouraging gay marriage, especially among males, is particularly conservative, as it tends to act against the stereotype of gay men as inherently polyandrous and promiscuous. The socially conservative perspective is naturally pro-gay-marriage.

BillCo: Goodbye southern Democrats.

Hey, welcome to 2012. Let me get you up to speed quickly: LBJ knowingly wrote off the Southern Democrats in the 60s when he pushed the Civil Rights Act through. Guess what the biggest bloc of Democrats in the South is now?

That's right: southern black people. I'm not sure Obama is quaking in his boots given that he received 95% of their votes last time around.

EnviroDude: The above are benefits of marriage, not the purpose

How about you straight up tell us what you think the purpose of marriage is instead of using this socratic bullshiat?

I guess gay people are the new Jews - they control the media (just look at all the gay shows, even on Fox) and they control all the money (10% of the populations, but 18% of the money Obama is getting).

Yeah, Obama being short on cash is not one of his election problems. Nice try, though.

BillCo: Maybe we can change it from the "Democratic" party to the "Fabulous" party.

Goodbye southern Democrats.

Most are gone or a rare breed already.

I live in Louisiana. We couldn't even find a Democrat to challenge Gov. Jindal on his re-election. Our one democratic senator doesn't look like she stands much of a chance at re-election.

Frankly I think most people who already dislike gay marriage either already supports Republicans or don't care enough to make it a one issue choice on who they vote for.
