I liked it so much I said it twice.

I'm not exactly certain why he didn't come out about his support of gay marriage yesterday or the day before, especially since he was due to be in NC. I certainly don't think it was about the money. Maybe he was afraid it would just polarize the other side to vote for it simply because he's against it. But I think there was a slow realization that he'd have to take a stand and soon. I'm a little peeved he didn't do it earlier, but I respect the fact that he thought about it and then made a decision in support of it. And I'm proud of him for taking that stand.

Romney, for the record, is definitely ___ it.

2012-05-09 04:21:32 PM
I think he spoke up because of the amendment in North Carolina, the fact that a majority of Americans think gay marriage should be legal, and that on this issue he can draw a clear distinction between himself and Romney.

Finally, its just the right thing to do, he knows that, he was just waiting for the right time to acknowledge it, and now is the right time for him.

Most are gone or a rare breed already.

I live in Louisiana. We couldn't even find a Democrat to challenge Gov. Jindal on his re-election. Our one democratic senator doesn't look like she stands much of a chance at re-election.

Frankly I think most people who already dislike gay marriage either already supports Republicans or don't care enough to make it a one issue choice on who they vote for.

Here's my opinion. People who are anti-gay are mostly religious. They fall broadly into two categories: white religious and black religious. Black religious will vote for Obama in high numbers, regardless of his feelings of gay marriage, and he can be a leader to start changing their attitudes about gay rights as civil rights. White religious will vote against Obama in high numbers, regardless.

Now there are some independents and hispanic voters that he could potentially lose, but I really think if he focuses on his accomplishments and lets Romney be Romney, he'll still end up winning. And if not - shame on you America.

I'd rather know his stance on dragging our economy out of the toilet.

Gay marriage should be legal. Sexual preference shouldn't dictate whether you should be able to be miserable for the rest of your life like us heterosexuals who get married.

Yeah, Obama being short on cash is not one of his election problems. Nice try, though.

I'll believe that when I see it. Low black support is what allowed Prop 8 to pass.

"Prop 8" is not the first black president. There's a difference between a concept and a person.

Uh millions of dollars from the Mormons had a lot to do with that.

Did you read the article? The same black people who voted for Prop 8 also voted for Obama.

That, and being sent to the ballot 14% ago in the national attitude shift.

Still, plausibly might ding black turnout.

He probably just officially kissed NC and VA goodbye (not that there's anything wrong with that). I see it hurting his re-election chances, which had seemed fairly good at this point.

At least, though, I do agree with his position.

Blacks have never fully supported civil rights for gays.

I guess gay people are the new Jews - they control the media (just look at all the gay shows, even on Fox) and they control all the money (10% of the populations, but 18% of the money Obama is getting).

/No

No, VA has Northern Virginia making it more liberal, plus, VA is still kind of pissed at the Republican governor and his rape wand.

A review of Obama's top bundlers, who have brought in $500,000 or more for the campaign, shows that about one in six publicly identify themselves as gay.

um...why is this important?

Its sad how many Republicans can't understand how anyone could be for gay marriage unless they themselves are gay

So if Obama supports gay marriage, Obama must be a homosexual!

Why, he flip flops all the time!

I bet he gets on top of a fine, christian man, and he flip-flops all over him, making that poor, oppressed, white, christian man caress his forbidden chocolate skin and kiss his flippitying floppitying nether regions and makes him say "Healthcare should be universal!"

VOTE ROMNEY!

Weaver95: I'm wondering why the Republicans oppose gay marriage.

If you knew the answer to the purpose of marriage (not to be confused with the benefits), you would know the answer to your question.

What is the purpose of marriage?

/remember, you can have companionship, raise kids, grow old without being married. So why marriage?

to show the community that two people who love one another are willing to make a public statement to that effect. also - it clarifies property rules when two people decide they want to spend the rest of their lives together.

all of this is fairly gender neutral.

Inheritance, family-level hospital access when a loved one is injured, societal recognition of the family unit and of a degree of love that goes beyond friendship or companionship... Shall I go on, or did you have some religious agenda you wanted to push?

Depends, are we talking historically or contemporarily?

2012-05-09 06:36:11 PM
as long as we don't force churches to perform a marriage ceremony that's against their beliefs, it's all good. besides, i'm pretty sure that there's a LOT of churches out there that WILL perform a marriage ceremony for gays who wanna get hitched. not to mention various pagan groups as well.

given that this country isn't a christian nation and is, in fact, secular...the religious objection shouldn't apply to state/federal marriage laws.
