mrshowrules: Anyone think the Biden "gaffe" was really planned to test the waters and set the stage first?

The only reason I don't think that is because of the timing. It completely stepped on Obama's campaign kickoff last weekend and threw him in a week where he had a number of public events already on the books where he would be (and was) asked about it and in which he took some heat from those in favor of it. Even sites like DailyKos were ragging on him about it earlier this week. If that was a by design gaffe they would have been much better off doing it either prior to the kickoff or waiting a few weeks. There's also the WH Press Secretary who all week has looked like he's been getting punched every time he's been asked about it.

That said, I don't think Biden's comments forced Obama to come out in favor of gay marriage when he otherwise didn't intend to. Just pushed up the timing.

No way! Didn't see that coming.

Funny thing is that most Farkers will actually believe him.

Yes, because clearly the politically safe move is to come out in favor of the homos.

Yes, it definitely is.

Nice chart lets look to see what happens in real life when put to a vote.... HEEEEEREEES NC! The results are in, and I am sorry chart you have lost.

Go ahead Obama tell the people of NC that they are bigots. Romney will send you a thank you card.

They are bigots. But Obama probably shouldn't say that out loud.

You actually support that BS amendment in NC?

Not really. I support state rights. There was no need to ban anything because it wasn't allowed. It was a waste of time and money. They did it though its their prerogative, not mine.

On a side note even as a conservative I would support gay marriage on a state level. I mean, I'm not religious if you want to be gay go for it.

We are not all hateful religious homophobic, bigotted zealots - most of us are rational, thinking human beings. Please do not let recent political events skew the good people of NC. We are just as embarrased about the aforementioned freakshows as the rest of the nation.

You are now returned to your thread, already in progress...

Hes waging a war on marriage, where marriage is defined as the revealed truth of God 2000 years ago to people so beset by superstition, disease, and famine that they had no other choice but to define it that way out of primal fear of retribution in order to increase military capacity for the righteous sacking of proximal and distant resources.

D_Evans45: Why the hell would you care if a dude wants to marry a dude, or a chick and chick? "It's gross" was the consensus from the guys at work when it came up awhile back. As a straight male I'd consider the act of gay guy sex pretty gross, lesbians different story. However, the common sense part of me says, so what? He wants to have gross gay sex with his husband all night, bombs away. She wants to strap on a rigid plastic instrument and plow away at her wifes vaginal cavity, have at it. Why shouldnt anybody be allowed to marry because of the different holes they beat on at night?

/If you wanna ruin your life with marriage gay people, go for it

I'm always curious how many of those "gay sex is gross" guys are into anal with their female partners? Just cause there's a vagina in front...they still want to stick their penis into an ass.
Makes no sense to me.

Well 'those people' could I guess just stay home and not vote at all. But I'm as certain as I can be the number of 'those people' for which Obama coming out and saying he's fine with gay marriage is the singular issue upon which their vote hinges is probably so farking small it won't matter either way. Maybe even small enough to offset the small amount of voters at large for which Obama's prior lack of support was the single issue they weren't going to vote for him.

In terms of the election, this is probably a wash. Still will be about the economy and the 5 remaining monthly jobs reports between now and the election.

Will it cost him a state he won in 2008 by a very close margin like North Carolina or Indiana? Probably not...because he's likely already lost those states anyway. But it will shore up parts of his base, and get more people involved with either donations or volunteer time.

I have a feeling the Obama camp was pretty much conceding NC this cycle anyway. He only won that state by about 14k votes in a much more favorable climate for him. I doubt the result of the vote there was any concern, he wasn't going to win NC this time.

lulz.

WalkingCarpet: MAXIMUM TROLLING

Good for him.

By doing this it will force the issue to be discussed nationally during this election instead of it being one that would be danced around because he and Romney kind of sort of but not really had the same view.

Romney will now have to explain and defend his position, which is now in stark contrast to Obama's, to a national audience and basically say "that's correct, I do not believe that gays and lesbians should be afforded the same rights as everyone else", which is an indefensible position in my mind.

But not in the GOP base's mind. This probably did nothing for Obama's chances either way, but it'll make Romney's position a little more solid, I'm thinking. He can come out and say he's a TRUE CONSERVATIVE and not the bland middle-of-the-road guy a lot of conservatives had been painting him as.

Like a Republican would ever vote for Obama, anyway, though. Hah. So I guess, in the end, it doesn't really matter.

He was insinuating that Romney is a flip flopper because he oversaw gay marriage in Mass. It isnt like Romney decided, hey Im going to do this. He had no choice in the matter. Until they pass an amendment or have a case heard by the SCOTUS its still left to the state. In Romneys situation the state did it.

"The Supreme Judicial Court of Massachusetts, on November 19, 2003, ruled that the state "failed to identify any constitutionally adequate reason" to deny gay persons the right to marry and that the state's prohibition on same-sex marriage violated the state's constitution. The Court, in its fifty-page 4 to 3 ruling, gave the state legislature 180 days to "take such action as it may deem appropriate in light of this opinion." Because the case, Goodridge v Department of Public Health, was decided on state constitutional grounds, there is no federal issue for appeal to the U. S. Supreme Court."
