What is really shiatty about the North Carolina law is that gay marriage was *already* illegal.

This new amendment made it clear that couples had no rights. In other words, no civil unions or any other kind of legal protection either for anyone who wasn't married.

I prefer to read it as, once one man and one woman are married, that's it. There can only be one married couple in the state at a time.
