There were Nazis. Hitler is often associated with Nazis for some reason.

Loved that game although I would have dreams of going through those maze hallways and doors.

Yep, Mecha-Hitler was the boss of the 3rd episode, unless you were playing the scrubbed NES version.

Wow, the one that started it all. I don't know, someone's going to reference a 1st person shooter that predates it but it's the first one I played. And it begat Doom which begat Quake which begat Duke Nukem which begat Half Life...

Looks like JT Ready knew this day was coming. Too bad he didn't have the game available to him. A 2 year old might still be alive.

Duke 3D predates Quake (barely), and Half Life is based on the Quake engine.

Ok, I knew I got it wrong. Not a big gamer. Although I did kick ass in the Half Life multiplayer. This is before most of your time but I was deadly with that crossbow.

That game still makes me dizzy when I play it.

The only other ones that do that are Katamari Damacy, and the Alien levels of Aliens vs. Predator when you have 120 degree vision and can climb on the walls.

Fallout 3 got me at times too when in close sewers and dimly lit vault corridors. I turned down the mouse speed and was fine.

I still remember when Hitler jumped out of the powered armor at the end of the boss fight ... I almost shat my pants.

Good times.

Nope, you are right, There were some 1st person RPG games, and a couple tank shooters, but the two Jons created the 1st person shooter right here.

/After Nintendo refused their PC port of Mario 3
//Read the book "Masters of Doom" It is the whole story of ID and a really good american sucess story

Wolf3D was id's third 3D title, after Catacomb 3D and Hovertank 3D.

But you're right, those games weren't widely distributed. (Catacomb 3D was a lot of fun, though.)

I played a first-person version of Pac Man on an IBM PC XT with a Hercules graphics card. But, yes, Wolf3D was the one that lit the FPS fire.

Duke was built on Ken Silverman's Build Engine and had nothing to do with Quake or Half-Life.

meat0918: That game still makes me dizzy when I play it.

Between the near-infinite FPS generated on modern systems, and the fact that there was no acceleration or deceleration when turning (you go from stationary to full-speed spin instantly) Wolf3D makes me sick to my stomach.

The only modern game that does that to me is Portal 2 due to the wider than normal POV. Anything wider than 90-degrees makes me ill.

Awesome and brings back good memories.

CSB: I composed the music for the Apple ][ GS version of Wolfenstein 3D. All versions of the game have a secret level in which the enemies are Pacman and the ghosts, but the GS version is the only version with its own music theme. Don't ask me what the hell posessed me at the time but what I did was take the Pacman music themes and set to a joyful big band swingfest complete with multiple solos.

I used to watch my dad play these games and this is what he would do:

1. Play the whole level and kill everything in sight
2. Save right at the elevator
3. Walk in, check his stats and see if he killed everything, check if he found all secrets
4. If something was incomplete, reload for in front of the elevator and go back and scour the whole level.

I got freaked out at the pac-man section

/was 9 years old.
