(The Big Picture)   Gas prices are falling - that's good. But it's likely because the economy is faltering as well - that's bad. If you still want to vote for Obama you can get your free frogurt, though everyone should know by now how cursed it is   (ritholtz.com) divider line 66

qorkfiend: Would this not imply that increasing gas prices are indicative of a recovering economy?

No, that's just Obama's fault. You see, if gas is going up, it is because Obama didn't build the Keystone pipeline. If gas is going down, it's because Obama is trying to sink the economy. Get it?

2012-05-09 02:39:50 PM
Some people are stupid enough to blame the fluctuations of gas prices on the President. Those people are not smart enough to vote. Actually, I am surprised they have enough mental ability to know how to put their pants and shoes on.

2012-05-09 02:44:57 PM
Gas prices are falling because people are using less gas.

The economy is recovering quite nicely, actually. Things are picking up in various sectors and opportunities are on the rise. Definitely better than it was the last two years at this time.

Given, my main market concentration is Software Engineering/Development on the Front Range. But things here are surely pointing up for the time being.

Keep screaming about how shiatty everything is though. Everyone else will just watch, point and laugh. Then we'll go to work and get paid while you cry and masturbate in the corner.

2012-05-09 02:46:20 PM
The left hand side of the graphs are interesting.. it seems that around 2007 the price of gas became correlated with the economy, but was negatively or not at all correlated before that .

It's pretty clear he's a crappy president. Why else would he hold off so long on pressing the big "Fix economy" button on his desk in the Oval Office? It's just that easy, right? One person can make sweeping changes that drastically affect the country based on their own personal initiative, overriding the behaviors and desires of everyone else in the United States.

Right?

Yeah, we haven't hit peak gas mania till people are in the news for spending $8k on a '92 Metro.

HeartBurnKid: And yet, the $1.50 it hit during the 2008 crash should be considered the norm, and Obama singlehandedly caused the price to skyrocket to current levels, amirite?

Of course.

What with our reduced dependance on foreign oil constricting our supply of gas so much that we are exporting gasoline.

Bladel: And now we've reached the point where energy speculation is a counterweight on the economy.

Economy falters --> Oil prices drop --> Economy recovers

I've been saying this for 3 years. It's funny how it works, really.

And usually it's "The economy shows SIGNS OF recovery," which drives up oil prices from speculators.

2012-05-09 03:00:52 PM

qorkfiend: Would this not imply that increasing gas prices are indicative of a recovering economy?

It could. If the economy is recovering, there's more demand for fuel. More fuel demand creates higher prices.

On the other hand, high gas prices can also stifle economic growth. So if gas prices are growing for reasons other than a recovering economy, that's a bad thing.

You can't just look at the costs of gas in a vacuum - you have to look at what factors are influencing the cost.

I'm a little skeptical that gas prices are that highly correlated to the economy though. There's definitely some correlation, but the graphs posted at TFA don't seem to show much correlation prior to the current downturn.

Unless the President is a Republican, in which case the "Fix economy" button doesn't work because the libtards stold the button and he can't push the button and the economy is their fault anyways because of abortion and evolution and low gas prices.

Any rtards wanna try asking why reality-based life forms can't take this shiat even remotely seriously any more?

Unless you are already a cult member deep inside the echo chamber this kind of obvious partisan propaganda just makes the right look like they are incapable of breaking away from the "Everything Obama does is wrong" narrative and telling the truth for even one second.

Not even lightly tethered to the planet by this point. Sad.

As seen during the primary debacle, these people do vote, in droves. So many of them vote that long-time, sane Republicans are now being outed by them. Those that are left are in a position of either pandering to them, or going the way of Dick Lugar.

Keynsian economics.

3. Gas and food prices rise.

Someone from the GOP will come to their house, help them dress, and drive them to the polls. They do this with nursing home residents, by the busload. That's why Leisure World always has the highest voting rate in the county.
