Lactaid makes a passable milk-like product for those of us who would still like to eat cereal occasionally.

When I was single, I poured a bowl of granola, then found my milk was sour. I tried it was apple juice instead, and it was actually pretty good. Similar results with rice crispies.

I used to love munching Frosted Mini Wheats dry then take a swig of orange juice and it was delicious. It also caused the most violent of blood sugar spikes and crashes. I'd wind up shaking like a leaf before lunch. Not diabetic or even pre-diabetic. The glucose index on that combination is a biatch.

Poor people, maybe?

My grandmother used to make scrambled eggs with water instead of milk. When I was a little kid, she told me those were her "special" scrambled eggs; later my mom told me that she made it that way because eggs were free but they couldn't always afford milk.

I'm not paying 6 bucks for a quart of Lactaid.

I don't miss the taste of milk, so I really have no desire to replace it with any of the alternatives, really. Also, for me, I'm the opposite of what those "super tasters" claim to be. everything (except for ginger) tastes pretty awesome to me.

Heat up some water with the right amount of cornstarch to get it thick enough, it's all about the viscosity. Throw some sugar in it to sweeten it up, there you go.
/ack!

Water on cereal? Puke

If you're lactose intolerant then use almond milk. Soy is poison and rice milk is way too sweet.

Pfft. Pikers.
Cereal tastes best when moistened by the tears from baby harp seals extracted from them whilst being clubbed.

/I'm pretty sure that's what they use to make Dove ice cream bars too.

Growing up in the late 50s, my mother use to stretch the milk by making another gallon of powdered milk and then mixing real with it half and half. I never got use to it but it was that or nothing. I was so envious of my friend whose parents were more well off than we were and they always had straight up milk, Welch's grape juice and those little variety boxes of cereal.
