80 year old sore loser. Next time live in the state you represent Mr. Lugar. See you in church this Sunday. Oh wait, that membership is just for show and you show up there once every 6 years.

I can't help but snicker at the pic of the article writer:

Even as I know such behavior is morally deplorable.

Who would voluntarily call himself "Dick"?

Is this where we say the Tea Party purging out all the moderates is going to kill the republican party?

2012-05-09 08:56:11 AM
Now it's an obstructionist idiot vs. a Blue Dog Democrat.

If only more elections in the midwest were as clear-cut as this, the Tea Party would be dead very quickly.

Yes, because heretofore, I've thought the problem with Republicans is too much church. But clearly you're right. The problem is not enough church.

He hasn't lived in the state in about 40 years. Why does it matter all of a sudden?

They're just being proactive: why put off losing senate seats to the general when you can lose them now in the primaries? Of course, you lazy dims would never understand that kind of get-up-and-go mindset.

Wasn't he a member of the Republican leadership? Sure you could call him a CINO if you want but he is clearly a Republican and helped set the party's policies.

I am. I voted for him several times. But then I find out he hasn't lived in the state for 35 years, doesn't even know what address is on his drivers license and has a piece of paper from the 1976 GOP as proof that he doesn't need to live in Indiana to represent Indiana. This guy presented like a genuine man and turned out to be something else. Not to mention no one deserves 42 years as a Senator.

Nice guy. "Member" of my church. And better off retired. If he had done it right he could have selected his successor from moderates. Instead we get Mourdock. And I have to vote Dem this Fall. Yes I'm bitter.

2012-05-09 09:05:38 AM
Lots of talk about how this is killing the Tea Party - actually this could be one of their biggest victories. This is not a clear-cut win for the Democrats. Mourdock is a hardcore teabagger, but he's not a total whackjob like Sharron Angle or Christine O'Donnell.

He could very well be elected and this will be a tough fight.

tenpoundsofcheese: Derp.

The formerly-most-senior-GOPer in Congress is a RINO.... how? Granted, Reagan would qualify for that idiotic label given what the Teabaggers have accomplished, but I do still like hearing the explanations. It's like watching a pug run repeatedly into the wall.

No one brought it to light until the Sec of State was convicted of voter fraud for address issues. It was kept secret.

The statement specifically namechecked FreedomWorks and the Club For Growth, the conservative groups that paid for negative ads tearing down Lugar in the closing weeks of the primary.

Nice.

So Dick Armey's proxy clone Dick Murdouche beat Dick Lugar by running a bunch of big money attack ads?

Wotta dick move.

When two dicks go to war, everyone loses.

FTFA: "The idea is that independents and centrist Republicans who voted Lugar into the Senate for all those decades will blanch when faced with Mourdock and will cast their ballots for Donnelly instead."

Doubtful. More likely they'll stay at home in November.

People must have known though right? Did he still pay state income tax? Get mail delivered? There is no way whoever Indiana elects is going to bring as much money to the state as Lugar would have but at least the people of the state got their say.

I read in the WSJ that this Mourdock guy has said "there's too much bipartisanship" in Congress. I don't remember the exact words but he said something to the effect of, we have honest American conservative principles, and we have European-style socialism, and one of those viewpoints has to win. He also said that he thinks his election campaign will essentially energize and inspire the entire Republican party. He has a Messianic view of himself and appears to be off his rocker.

I can only hope that it's at least 50% act for the rubes in the Hoverounds. I will take deep satisfaction when said rubes discover that those checks they get every month are in fact government benefits, and yes, the ideologues they're so determined to put into office intend to cancel those checks, eliminate all capital gains taxes, turn all property in the US into a natural gas exploration field, double defense spending, do nothing whatsoever to address the persistent deficits, and then let the chips fall where they may, trailing clouds of glory as they write their self-aggrandizing memoirs and take K Street jobs to fight the good fight at $800,000 per year.

And when the next, inevitable massive financial swindle/scandal hits, I won't be even a little surprised when I hear that it's Jimmy Carter's fault.

I voted for Lugar yesterday, and most likely that's the last time I'll ever vote for a Republican.

Say what you want about him, he knew what his job was, which was representing Hoosiers, not just Republicans. This moron that beat him thinks compromise is a dirty word. I'm worried about this election, between Mike Pence running for gov and this dipwad for senator, I'm afraid we're going the Florida/Arizona route.

The full text of his statements, linked from TFA, are nicely put. He chides Mourdock, the Teahadists, and Democrats as well, telling them all to work together. Worth a read, IMHO.

36 years in office is too long regardless of party affiliation. I am happy to see the power of the incumbency weakened. If you guys really want to see real change you need to vote out those guys who have been in office for 12 years or longer otherwise you will continue to get business as usual.

Indiana political reporting g sucks. The party knew. They gave him a letter in 1976 telling him it was ok. farking party sucks too.

But he pretended to live here and his mail was received at his campaign headquarters. Not his family farm. He had. I residential address here. All this was made public this year in an interview with him.

This is about 10% Tea Party and 90% residency. Don't read too much into this as a Tea Party victory.

2012-05-09 09:15:13 AM
Yesterday was a bad day for the nation. The Teahadists kicked someone out of congress for even daring to reach across the aisle even in the nation's best interest. North Carolina voted against human rights by an overwhelming majority. And Maurice Sendak died.

Since the problem is with how people get elected and not so much the specific people that are elected, one wonders how kicking out incumbents can possibly improve anything.

Why is being in office for a long time inherently bad? If legislators aren't responding to the concerns of their constituents, then those constituents should vote them out. If they are responding to those concerns, then why should those voters be punished by not being able to vote for somebody they think is doing a good job of representing them?

If you guys really want to see real change you need to vote out those guys who have been in office for 12 years or longer otherwise you will continue to get business as usual.

This is one of those viewpoints that sounds like common sense until you examine it.

1. In what other field would you say that you need to turn over the expertise and leadership on a regular basis? Surgeons? Nuclear plant safety inspectors? Airline pilots?
2. What is the evidence that regular, massive influxes of legislative freshmen have helped? Take your favorite principle--let's say it's deficit reduction--and show me the evidence that election cycles that brought in lots of new blood resulted in reduced deficits.
3. "Business as usual" is something of a loaded phrase. It's not entirely invalid, but balanced against it is a phrase like "unpredictable lunging from one policy to the next."
4. The problem is by no means limited to the legislators themselves, whether they're veterans or newbies. The core of the problem is two entrenched parties that have written "rules" about how Congress works, rules that have no basis in the constitution, or even in law. They're just "rules" that the parties came up with to protect their own interests and keep other parties out. Add on to this an entrenched unelected bureaucracy, also looking after its own interests. Now you inject a bunch of wet-behind-the-ears, fire-breathing ideologues who roar into DC, pounding their fists and shouting, "THIS time, there's going to be CHANGE, THIS time, we MEAN it."

Uh huh.
