You know it's a funny thing, but of all the transexuals I've known, I don't think A signle one of them went on to live what might be considered a "gender normal" life as their new sex.

I knew one M to F who promptly shaved her head and became a celibate Tibetan buddhist Nun almost immediatly thereafter (and with the buzz cut looked far more like a man than she ever had before)

I knew more than one M to F who stayed married to their wives and made the transofrmation with their wive's whole hearted approval

I guess the closest to ":normal" was the couple who both had reassignment surgeries at the same time and stayed married-at least for a while

Ahh well, as the great Philosopher Ray Davies observed: "Boys will be girls and girls will be boys, it's a mixed up world"

Thought this was cool. Someone pointed out this lyric in his song "The Ocean" from the New Wave album:

"If I could have chosen, I would have been born a woman.
My mother once told me she would have named me Laura.
I would grow up to be strong and beautiful like her. "

As long as Gabel sounds the same, I'm just glad s/he's happy.

I've seen a show on Discovery/History/Science/whatever that dealt with the existence of 'chimera' people. The theory is that more than one egg gets fertilized, but rather than fraternal twins developing, one fertilized egg is absorbed by the other.

Ever since hearing about such a thing, I've wondered if transsexuals are one of the results of this process. They often report feeling like a woman trapped in a man's body (or vice-versa), but don't really identify as gay. I'm sure more research is needed.

One theory is that they don't fit in with a rigid gender dichotomy, on either side. However, in many places, in order to get the reassignment surgery in the first place, they must act as stereotypical for the other gender as possible - heels, pearls, etc., or combat boots, fake beard, etc. As a result, during that time, we get an artificially skewed view that may not accurately represent their real personality.
Accordingly, it wouldn't be surprising to find that, once they've gotten the surgery, many of them drop the extreme stereotypical habits.

The question would be what they would do if we didn't have such a rigid gender dichotomy in the first place.

I always thought that was a weird thing to just put in a song. I never thought it was meant to be taken literally. But yeah, as long as she's happy.

That's a very interesting point actually. I hadn't condiered the approval for surgery angle. I'd always assumed it came from an internal attempt to validate your own beief that you are somehow the "wrong " gender. Thus If you are a male rejecting your own gender for example, you might supress traits you identify as "masculine" to an even greater extent than a "natural" woman might, resulting in an almost hyper-feminine ideal. but the fact that it might be more than a little Play-acting to convince the surgeon makes more sense.

I was acquainted with a guy who I heard later went the same route. Gender identity and sexual orientation appear to be independent. As for the wives being cool with it, maybe they were in love with the real person all along.

Actually not a bad question.

However, gender reassignment is a long, arduous process that holds some risk, and "changing back" isn't as cut-and-dried as all that. I can't imagine how much sensitivity you'd lose by going through two surgical procedures, all the hormone treatments, and everything else involved in this scheme.

I doubt many of them would live what would be considered "gender normal" lives after reassignment. You're talking about a group of people who have had to shed typical notions of gender identity long ago. They had to fake or adapt their entire lives, and after the physical move they're not likely to fall into the typical gender stereotype.

Good for him. It's probably pretty weird if you don't feel comfortable in your body and are the lead singer, i.e. hear your male voice all the time (assuming you're not in a Rush cover band). A major battleground between narcicissm and dysmorphia...

Aren't most gender conflicts just an unrestrained fetish or compulsion? For instance, there are many overweight people who claim they're fat because of a 'genetic disposition' when really it's a result of their life choices. While I believe those cases do exist, they are in very small numbers. It seems to me most cases of gender conflict are, well, addictions. This applies to people who are obsessed with piercings, tattoos and plastic surgery as well. Many of us get addicted to the things that give us comfort. I say this knowing many transgender, overweight, pierced and tattooed people, so I'm basing this on personal experience. But I'm curious to hear what other people think. I'm not judging - if it makes you happy and it doesn't hurt anyone, have at it. But the people I know in the above categories are not happy, and may never be. They seem to be in a constant state of conflict, always chasing something they'll never catch. What say you?

I'm not so much a punk fan as I am an Against Me! fan. Their first album "Reinventing Axl Rose" is raw as hell, sounds like it was recorded in a basement. I got into them way after that, but a lot of their older fans swear by it. Personally I like the "Searching For a Former Clarity" and "New Wave" albums pretty much in their entirety. I found "White Crosses" a bit disappointing.

I saw them twice live. The first time was from the cheap seats at MSG when they were opening for the Foo Fighters. I'm sure they were great but I could barely tell. The second time was at Bonnaroo in 2010, and I was just outside of the pit. Incredible.

I'd personally go wth Reinventing Axl Rose, but you might want to start with their live album, Americans Abroad. they are an incredible live band.

I actually have friends in PA that are a married gay male couple and it is legal because one of them is a female to male trans whose home state does not allow birth certificate changes after sexual reassignment surgery. therefore, when they applied for their marriage license they were able to produce female birth certificate for him.
