Don't worry, I hear that Obama is going to give her bailout money.

I blame James Frey. And James A. Ray. Both of whom showed the world that she is gullible and easily led by charismatic charlatans. Her credibility never recovered.

Basically, she should avoid men named James with last names ending in -ay. Someone should mention it to her.

Especially Frey. I suffered through that horribly written lousy excuse for a book when everyone in the office was babbling on about it. It wasn't even a tiny bit plausible. I am suspicious by nature, but I don't see how anyone could have fallen for that nonsense. The dentist scene? Oh please.

Success in one area doesn't mean you have an aptitude for another.

Oprah was a great, nay legendary talk show hostess. That doesn't mean she's a Rupert Murdoch type. Hell, I bet ya dollars to donuts Murdoch couldn't host a talk show either. Totally different skill sets.

Well, in Oprah's defense, Rosie DID have a successful talk show that ran for six years. Granted, this was also before Rosie went completely off the rails.

He was born and grew up in my hometown in Michigan, and my sister knew him from high school - apparently he kind of liked her. She said all his stories were BS even before the story broke.

Channel marketing doesn't work if you a) screw your channel, b) start your own channel which requires a subscription fee (aka cable) and then c) compete with your old channel.

The old channel has been at it for years and knows Oprah's viewership better than Oprah. Furthermore Oprah should stop telling women to hide their husband's socks.

Just add reality tv shows instead of the cop type reruns from other networks she have on now

While Oprah does not have a personal financial stake in the company, it is still undoubtedly a black eye for her.

So one of the richest women in the world convinced a bunch of numbnuts to bankroll an idea she didn't sink a dime into herself and now it is failing and not going to her harm her finances a bit. Ok. Got it.

Her problem is quite simple: content -- she has none of it.

Most of the programming they had in the first year were reruns for shows from other channels.

I'm confused, tfa says she stands to lose nothing? She found backers to put up 100% of the costs to run an entire network? If anything, that's impressive on her part, or really really dumb that she found so many idiots with deep pockets.

Meh, If Oprah stars in two shows a day five days a week she will turn this network around. Oprah is a cult of personality and the biggest mistake of this fledgeling network was not putting Oprah on the air for as many hours as they could force her to work.

Robert Evans is surely proud of her. He frequently violated his own mantra of never invest your own money.

I do not want to see Oprah working Rubik's cubes with Brian Dennehy.

She got into cable about 15 years too late.

She should shoot whatever advisor told her it would be a good idea to own a cable network.

Also everybody involved that putting Rosie on was a bad idea. By that time Rosie O'Donnel was poison.

I wonder just how few employees you would need to run a cable network.

If you had no studios and bought all your content from others, it would certainly cut down on costs.

Sales force could be commission only.

3 or 4 people. Tops.

/well, 50 or so to run for Oprah

animal900: Because People in power are Stupid: Furthermore Oprah should stop telling women to hide their husband's socks.

I don't get it.

In the early years of Married with Children, Al Bundy had a theory that Oprah was secretly giving orders to all the housewives while the men were away at work. In one episode, Al complains that he has no matching socks and blames Oprah. Later on in the episode, they are attending some function, and the camera pans down to see that no man has a pair of matching socks. Their wives give each other knowing looks, as if the plan is succeeding.

Oprah of the 80's was very different than Oprah of this past decade. She was not known for being a media mogul, just a very popular daytime talk show host who was on the same level of Geraldo and Donahue. Only men really did believe she was a bad influence on their wives, giving them secret orders to mess with their husbands.

I think Bloom Country also covered this topic back in the day.

That's probably what the poster was referring to.

Ever take a look at the Liberal posters doing the same thing (in far greater numbers)? Just substitute the Republican flavor of the day in place of Obama. Some people can't help but politicizing every farking thing that happens in the world.
Run out of toilet paper, and can't wipe your ass? Obama's to blame.
Trip down the stairs on your way out the front door? farking Republicans had something to do with that.

It does get old.

I don't get daytime TV. It is awful. It has always been awful. Nobody watches it who isn't already bored out of their minds, and the shows all apparently have a budget of $100 an episode.

You have 'judge' shows, talk shows, game shows, and soap operas. Trying to take the talk show and make it a 24 hour 'phenomenon' sounds dumb.
