It's mostly for the truck space. Holds 2 dead hookers without removing their legs. Try that with a Honda Accord.

if you lay the seats down in the scion you can stack 'em high. only problem is they're easily visible to everyone, and smell bad too

I don't know the proper definition, but here's what two of them look like.

Traditionally a Ute is a vehicle with a tray made using a traditional car base.

Ie, a sedan or wagon with the boot (trunk) and rear seats hacked off and a tray in its place. For example, commodore or falcon utes.

Although most Australians call light trucks (hilux, rodeo, navara, etc) which were never designed as anything but a light truck, utes also as they fill the same purpose.
