ModernLuddite: It just sounds like the guy split up with his first wife, never divorced, had a relationship with some woman, then met someone else and married her. The first wife is the piece of shiat for showing up looking for a cheque after all these years.

So, the man isn't a piece of shiat for marrying knowing he isn't divorced? If he cared about his benefits going to his second wife, he would have gotten the divorce.

Type40: Soldiers don't go to heaven, Jesus was pretty anti the whole killing other people thing.

Yeah, but his dad was pretty pro killing other people and I think dad is the one in charge, really. Jesus is more like the...screw up son who only got his position and keeps his job because his dad is boss.

How does that happen in this day and age? Wouldn't someone have noticed the computer records; the IRS maybe; army benefits; someone?

Whiskey Dickens: Aulus: It was late afternoon and he asked me to come back in the morning when he would probably feel better. I said OK, but got him to sign an authorisation for medical records. I came back at 8 AM and he was in a coma. By noon, he was dead. I immediately put in for the records and got them a couple of days later. Reading through them, I found that they took blood on admission, 2 hours after the accident. His BAC was 0.286. He was flat out drunk. any deer he saw was in his head, not the road. I called the main office just as they... ...out his widow had five kids and there was another woman with three kids, claiming to be his common law wife. Both were claiming benefits but got shot down with the denial.

My hero! This is how to treat the family of an alcoholic the way they deserve. You sure won that little conflict by using the moral high ground.

You'd think having a drunk dad would be enough punishment for 8 kids, but I guess they didn't learn their lesson with that alone. Cut off their benefits, and next time they'll think twice about being born to a drunk.

As some one else said, nice faux outrage. We had no choice, as the law says if you are drunk when injured or killed on the job, no benefits, period. The real blame is on the asshole who decided to get drunk and drive and subsequently wreck. Now, let's take this another way. Suppose instead of wrecking his rig out in the middle or nowhere, he did it on a crowded city freeway, taking out multiple cars and killing or injuring a good many others. Would it be equally as heartless and unfair to the drunk's survivors, as you seem to feel, that the attorneys for those he killed or injured go after his estate and further impoverish the drunk's survivors?

Why isn't it legal?

If all parties are aware and consenting to the arrangement it SHOULD be. If However only one paerson, the husband, knows then it should be treated as a form of fraud, because you are entering into an unlmitd partnership vis-a-vis your assets and even in the business world you can't do that with two different partners

Yeah, if he really cared he would have divorced wife one. Also, before they deploy, they go through a thing where they make sure the will, survivor benefits are up to date. He could have named anybody as the beneficiaries! So if he really wanted wifey number 2 to the the money he would have named her.

Marriage records aren't commonly share interstate and if the first wife wasn't filing jointly, the IRS wouldn't necessarily pick them out.
