Marriage records aren't commonly share interstate and if the first wife wasn't filing jointly, the IRS wouldn't necessarily pick them out.

The only thing that comes to mind is that he never had the unit admin enter the second wife's info into the personnel database, which is why the first one is getting his death benefits and not the other. All personnel records update near-instantly with any changes, and goddamn near everything is digital and saved to an online profile.

Usually units are completely anal-retentive about ensuring that a Soldier has an up-to-date copy of their SGLV (life insurance), DD93 (Emergency Contact Info), and a Family Care Plan (making sure spouse & kids will be taken care of). If he really did divorce one chick and marry the other, some admin totally dropped the ball and never made the appropriate changes in the system. Or it's more likely that he outright cheated on the first wife, never said anything to anyone, and everything was left as-is. Ugh, as an admin who's had to deal with stuff similar to this before, I need another beer...

When I came out of IRR in 2010 for ~10 months back with a unit, you would not believe how outdated some of my records were. I can't speak to other branches, but the Army still had my phone number at my dad's house (moved 2005) on one resource site, and my number from my old apartment (moved out in Feb 2008) on another.

So no, it is not instantaneous, especially if you filled some of it out before they changed formats. They do have you check or change paperwork annually, but it's only as effective as the admin running the audit or annual update. I WAS an administrative assistant, and even I didn't realize that some of my stuff hadn't been updated even before I went to the IRR, because they don't link every single thing into one database (AKO vs. My2xCitizen vs. Mypay etc). I think it took three months to get everything straightened out, and I lucked into finding a JAG officer at the holiday party to update my will, since I had gotten married in the meantime. This might be slightly more of a problem for the Reserves with the lag time between drills, but I'm betting it happens a lot on Active Duty as well, knowing some of those folks as I did...

It wouldn't be up the military to notice this, this would be up to the wife to notice it. If first wife wasn't listed with the military then they wouldn't know. AFAIK they don't involve the spouse with much except after death, so even if first wife WAS listed with the military, second wife might not notice right away.

Kinda easy to do. Divorce is a long, complicated, expensive process. I can imagine that after 2 people decide they never want to see each other again, it'd be all to easy to just move away and forget. You may not even be able to FIND the old spouse without hiring a PI.

Seems easy to just tell yourself the old spouse must be dead or something. Your new wife won't bring up what she blissfully doesn't know and the state probably won't stop you from doing it.

And once you've DONE it, you're kinda screwed. I mean, bigamy is illegal. If you bring it up, it's criminal, but can go unnoticed for a long time. Maybe she'll die first and the problem will go away on its own.

Pfft... that's nothing. I had to process a/c maint records for special forces Black ops C130's. Literally, 90% of the data was flat out wrong. If a civilian airline kept records that badly, they would have been shutdown in a day.

I should've specified: it updates near-instantaneously when you update. Old stuff will stay old, particularly if it was before the big push to digitize everything. I was a Reserve unit admin (as well as the S1...), so yeah, I saw a LOT of people in your situation where they'd gotten out or went IRR for several years and then came back into the Reserves. We pretty much had to throw out damn near EVERYTHING and start over fresh. And I've mobilized a few times and moved twice as many, so I've got all kinds of now-incorrect data over damn near a dozen systems. Like medical, which has absolutely no truck at all with HR systems, and worse, Reserve and Active systems rarely talk, so I'm never sure what info is where when I go somewhere. ARRRRRRRRRRRGH.

FWIW, the military DID try to do an all-in-one database. It was called DIMHRS, Defense Integrated Military Human Resources System, and it was a great idea, but eventually they gave up on it. Think of trying to load the data from all of the different systems between just the Reserves, and then all of the systems between Guard, Reserves, and Active, and THEN across all branches of the military. Too much legacy data from too many systems. Pity, it was a good idea. :-\

because when you have just one wife she only has you as the target to nag.... but if you get 2 wives.... you can have them nag each other while they leave you alone!

thats why so many anti marriage threads point out that women stop caring once theyve gotten their man... because at that point competition ceases. with multiple wives... the competition doesnt end.

say one wife gets pissy you arent helping with the dishes.... you call the second wife in, and ask her to be a doll and help out. when she does, you then reward the second wife with something the first wife wanted. eventually the first wife will quit being sulky and start doing what you want in order to get what she wants.

Actually, this happens more often than one would think, as I found out when I was a claims adjuster. Right off the top of my head, I can think of two. (CSB time)

The first was on a workers comp claim I handled on the death of a semi driver. He went off road, into a farm field, ran 200 yards down the field before tipping the rig over and sliding another 100 feet into a copse of trees. When the highway patrol got there, he told them he had swerved to miss a deer. I got to the scene two hours after the accident, at 4 AM and spoke with the officer. He said there was no sign of impairment of the driver, other than he was pretty banged up. After getting the scene secured, cargo transferred and the unit towed out, I went to see the guy in hospital. He was in a lot of pain, as he had a collapsed lung and had had a chest tube in him. It was late afternoon and he asked me to come back in the morning when he would probably feel better. I said OK, but got him to sign an authorisation for medical records. I came back at 8 AM and he was in a coma. By noon, he was dead. I immediately put in for the records and got them a couple of days later. Reading through them, I found that they took blood on admission, 2 hours after the accident. His BAC was 0.286. He was flat out drunk. any deer he saw was in his head, not the road. I called the main office just as they were cutting a check for the widow and told them to tear it up. Iowa workers comp law has an immediate denial if you are drunk when injured. It later turned out his widow had five kids and there was another woman with three kids, claiming to be his common law wife. Both were claiming benefits but got shot down with the denial.

The second, oddly enough, happened just a few miles from the truck wreck above. A charter plane owner and his employee where flying back from Kansas City with a new Cessna, the boss in the lead plane and the employee following in the Cessna. They were amusing themselves by buzzing traffic on I-35 when the employee got too low and hit telephone lines crossing I-35 and crashed, killing him. We had two "widows" with that one, too. I wanted to deny the claim due to horseplay, but the insurance company wussed out and paid one of the widows.

From the Wikipedia entry it was right around the time I got out and they scrapped it before I came back in; I'm kinda glad I missed it honestly. Just glad I kept multiple copies of all my stuff. First lesson I got with my first unit: KEEP COPIES OF EVERYTHING.

of training ammo they needed pre deployment

I appreciate how that sucks. I walked into the Pentagon, told two full bird Colonials that the ammo distribution system they bet their career's on was a Pos.
We got canned, and the POS 8a system contractor raked in 3 milion a year no further questions asked.
