For a short time but an adult male cougar can weigh over 200 lbs. Whatever resistance the dog could manage would likely be brief.

A cast iron skillet? Really? For some reason using a cast iron skillet on a rabid cougar sounds funny to me.

But seriously, if you also had a pistol, why not just
use the pistol?

It's obvious. You can't carry both at the same time.

Taken from http://www.ndhealth.gov/disease/Rabies/QandA.htm

What happens if my dog, cat or ferret is bitten or fights with a wild animal or another animal that may have rabies?

If the animal that bit your pet can be captured, have the brain tested for rabies. If the test is negative for rabies and your pet has not been vaccinated, you should vaccinate it at this time.

If the biting animal was positive for rabies and the pet is current on its rabies vaccination, then consult with a veterinarian about getting your pet a booster shot. Observe your pet for 45 days for any symptoms of rabies after the booster shot.

If the biting animal is positive and your pet has not been vaccinated or is not current with its rabies vaccination, the recommendation is to put the pet down. If you are unwilling to put the pet down, it must be confined for 6 months and vaccinated 1 month prior to release.

Well, the more you know.

It was "another member" of the group who had the pistol. Most likely he was too busy running to think about protecting others. Hero tag for the dog's owner grabbing the skillet and attacking a farking rabid mountain lion to keep his dog from getting mauled.

Gun owner hatred duly noted.

Even more likely than the armed guy running is the notion that the dog and cat were tied up and any responsible firearms owner would know they couldn't shoot at the cat without a significant risk of hitting the dog.

Whacking it in the head with the iron skillet probably dazed it long enough to let them get the dog clear so they could deliver the coup de grace.

The place is called Inti Wara Yassi http://www.intiwarayassi.org/
and they have 3 camps like this in Bolivia. I went to Ambue Ari, which has the most cats of the three camps. They have pumas, jaguars, ocelots and some other animals.
Volunteers, like myself, pay $10 a day to take care of the animals and live/eat at the camp. So I'd spend 6-8 hours walking my puma on a leash through the jungle, and at the end of the day, take her back to her cage and feed her. No experience required!
The cats were tamed before going to this park... in the zoo, as pets, in the circus, etc. So the park is an alternative to being stuck in the zoo for them.

What I find odd, is there's no option for pets similar to what they do for people who are bitten? My understanding is that if given shots prior to symptoms, you'll usually survive. If not, you'll usually die (heard of 1 or 2 cases of people surviving rabies, it's scary shiat), but pets? Just "tough luck"?

What are lion rabies, and why would you want to give them to a mountain?

Ha. I am a firearm owner. I was just trying to figure out how it played out.

There are two kinds of people who would take a firearm on a camping trip or whatever this was.
1) A responsible and proactive-thinking person who brought it for exactly this possible situation (knowing you're going into the wilderness, and that there's the chance of running into a moose, bear protecting its cubs, or rabid mountain lion (as it were).
2) A paranoid chicken shiat.

I figured it wasn't #1 because by definition he's already mentally prepared for the situation and should have been more on top of it than the guy who had to think it through and grab a frying pan first.

OTOH, it's possible you're right and that the protective instinct of the dog owner kicked in before the guy with the firearm even knew of the attack or something... maybe he was on the other side of the camp.
