Not good. Not bad. Looks like "meh". Kind of like the old Dodge Dart. An acquired taste I guess.

If it's built anything like the Neon, the only thing reliable about the car is that you know without a doubt that you'll be disposing of it at 60,000 miles.

This is a valiant move. The Dart could be a real demon, but I think we'll come to love this little scamp.

Gold Duster or Feather Duster?

Say what you want about Dodge Darts, but it's damn near impossible to kill a slant six. You can run them for hours without any oil in them, and even then they'll run out of gas first.

While reading this article I was blinded by all the Neon, stumbled into a Viper pit then got butted by a Ram.

THIS. When Dr Zaius is trying to refute the human artifacts one of them will be a dodge dart with a slant 6, that still runs.

I'll take it if it has a slant 6, a carburetor and points & plugs; no emission controls and brake pads that I can replace myself. Oh, and an AM-only radio.

I dunno, having had both bench seats and captain seats, I'll stick with captain seats. Plus I like having a console in the middle where I can safely store stuff that is more readily accessible than the glove compartment.

My grandma had a '74 Swinger with green sparkle paint and green sparkle vinyl interior. Green dash, green carpet, green everything. I was driven to church every week in that thing.

It had the 318 which was another quality Mopar engine. It was still running great in 1990 when it was willed to my cousin when Grandma got a Cavalier, and lasted a few more years before he tore up the rear end due to his constant hooning. A bit envious it was never mine.

Just double-checked with a GIS. It was a '73. And I forgot to mention the green vinyl roof. People really liked green in 1973.

Damn, I only have one picture of the Swinger, and it has me in a bathing suit in front of it. Bright orange (the car.) I think it was a '73.

It wasn't that great of a car, but we loved it anyway because it was a Swinger. It was my college car. We did some awful things in it.

The center hump, which used to cover the drive shaft, is now the primary structure of a unibody car. To do a bench would require the removal of the hump, and that would require more structure elsewhere. You couldn't do bench seats in a car as an option, it would have to be the standard.

Which is likely true and sad, considering you couldn't kill the original with the slant-6.

I dont know about the bench seat. I remember my old square bodied S10 where I had two buckets and had removed the center console. Butt between the seats and knees on them.... god I have got to get that ol SOB back on the road...

wat?

RWD tranny humps were a hell of a lot bigger than the hump new cars have, and they had both bench or buckets quite easily...

I think it's a nice looking car. I'm not in the market for anything like this, but if Chrysler can get it's reliability ratings up (the Challenger and 200 and Durango score really well) I'd put Chysler/Dodge back on my list.

Cars have to be engineered to support a front bench seat, I guess. It always used to be done - until recently all cars designed for the American market were designed this way, FWD or RWD. But now all of the Detroit 3 use global platforms for their cars, and people outside the US don't want a front bench so the possibility for it isn't designed in anymore. Even in the US the cost-benefit is small since so few people want them. The sort of traditionalist Americans who want their vehicles made the old-fashioned way seem to prefer trucks anyway, and you can obviously still get trucks with bench seats. The only remaining car is on the last remaining platform designed for the American market (the current Chevrolet Impala, riding a platform that first hit the showrooms in 1988 and which is due for cancellation next year.)

Kids don't miss what they never had. They don't need a front bench seat in the car to get busy. They have their ways.

If it's made by Dodge it'll be down to 11 MPG within a year of normal driving.

I'm curious about that white car in line behind the featured red one (seen in the video). It looks like a similar car, but it has a Jeep grille. What are the implications? A return of Eagle/AMC products?

Yup. My first car was a white '66 Dart, with ugly red vinyl bench seats. That slant 6 was a great motor, easy to maintain, etc. I sold it and got a VW Dasher, which was a wonderful invention, but no replacement for the automobile.

the oldies were terrific working man cars. reusing the old name just cheapens that. moms, dads & grand-parents will buy their college-bound kids the models with the best intent. hopefully they won't be disapointed.

Abso-damn-lutely! I always got good titty action in the front bench, and the hot & sloppy hole of love in the back seat.

Why wouldn't you just buy an Alfa Romeo Giulietta instead?

It's the same car..but the Giulietta looks prettier....no doubt both suffer from the same problems (short seat squab, nowhere to put your left foot..and an exhaust note that sadly for an Alfa..drones :( )
I had one as a courtesy car whilst my 159 fell to bits...

Kinda underwhelming front fascia. For the compact car I like the Chevy Cruze more, especially with fog lamps. The Dart's interior is pretty snazzy looking.

Speaking as someone who drove an ancient Dodge pickup with an enormous bench seat, I agree. Someone missed the point. Honking the horn accidentally was a coitus interuptus.

The first car I owned was a 76 Dart that was 10 years old. If I pulled up the driver's side floor mat I could pretty much do a Fred Flintstone through the rust hole in the floor.
