A friend of mine illustrates Little Bear books. He entered the Tupac stage years ago.

Behold the power of franchising!

All commerce aside, he was a great talent.

Even with tits... just get.

Wish I had a digital pic of it, but my aunt's family is/was good friends with him. They have a lake place in wisconsin with a dead tree chainsawed into a momma bear, little bear, cat, owl, etc. Looks *really* good...

He didn't like kids much. He didn't like people a whole lot more. He was part of that generation of New York Jewish misanthropes who were in the exact right place and time to recycle their farkedupedness into great and universal art, words, and views. Whether you know it or not, you owe them.

Incidentally, Stephen Colbert's book just released today, I Am a Pole (And So Can You), has a review quote from Sendak at the top on the front of the dust jacket.

"The sad thing is, I like it!"

Its been surprising to me how revered this guy is/was. I was born in 1965 so I was at a prime age more or less for WTWTA, but I can only remember picking this book up maybe once, then never hearing anything about it again til I guess the movie came out. Anyway, read a bit about him today, seems like he was a weird but cool guy.

No, he created a hologram that will outlive him. I realize in retrospect that I didn't really flesh out that analogy. I blame the vino.

I remember that book well... But for the life of me, I had forgotten that Maurice Sendak had written it. I also don't remember reading/being read Where the Wild Things Are or In the Night Kitchen. I do remember Little Bear, though, even if he only illustrated it.

/I was shocked when last year I found out Maurice Sendak was still alive

I'm confused. What do holograms have to do with his books?

fark them is what I say; I hate those holograms. They cannot be the future... they may well be. I will be dead, I won't give a shiat!

Don't tell me things like that. I had a hardcover (with DJ) when I was a kid that was my mom's. The timing would be just right for a first edition because she would have been 10 or 11 when it was published. Now I'm going to have to check the shelves in the old homestead.

my minor (very) CSB:

the publishing company I worked for in NYC had a cover featuring original Sendak art. When the limo showed up with the art (no Sendak) it was my job to take it down to kinkos to get a good color copy for our distribution promos. So as I walked down the block with the art tucked in a manila folder (in a plastic bag) I realized, oh, I'm carrying an original Sendak watercolor two blocks in a heavy spring rain...

book was this one, by way:

One of my favorite memories was once when my Husky pup, Tasha was sitting on my lap, as a joke I started reading WTWTA to her simply because I had bought a copy at a garage sale and it was on the table next to my chair. And because I called her my Wild Thing. To my surprise she loved it. Not the BOOK of course but just me talking to her and giving her attention. Read it to her several times through her life. Always the same response. Miss her. Thank you Mr, Sendak for a wonderful book and a treasured memory. saw a Tweet earlier today that said something along the lines of "He finally went home today. And when he got there, he found his dinner waiting for him. And it was still hot..." Room got REALLY dusty.
