Geez, dude... too soon.

Draq: kmoser:

Actually, it's more analogous to the idea of one's Home Page on the Web, which predates Facebook by, oh, ten years or so.

Yes, well, "Abaham Lincoln invented Geocities" isn't nearly as good of a headline. I think we can all agree geocities was a mistake.

If Lincoln had invented Geocities, Booth would have been hailed as a hero instead of the bad guy. The defense, "he needed killin'" would have been successfully used in his trial.

Heh. It's on ZD now.

But, just as quickly, the Forbes' blog post on it has been pulled.

no shiat! That article was padded so much I kept scrolling down hoping to find the relevant paragraph. WTF? I don't care if he left his phone at home. I tend to bring my phone everywhere but it's actually quite rare for me to ever use it. It's good to have in case I need it but usually I don't.

I think that makes me more "old school" than just deciding to leave it home one day.

I'll give you a hint: Don't bet on "pretty neat story".

redcard: VERY clever hoax.

Not really. Al that conveniently missing information:

"Oops, that's cropped, sorry. Oops, that's blurry, sorry. Oops, I can't show you the critical page, sorry."

You have to be pretty damn credulous to fall for this.

Quote from the comments section:

"Newspapers of the era couldn't reproduce photographs. Until the 1880s or so, photographs had to be turned into engravings before printing. So...yeah, it's bullshiat. Viral marketing for a movie, a hoax, whatever."

Add that to the picture used came four years after the newspaper did it's easy to call this one a hoax. But hey, this is the Internet.

If a hoax, the reader gets set up by hearing that he left his phone at home, so therefore can't take pictures. Though PT Barnum appears to have known Lincoln.

I dont buy the picture argument as an issue, if somebody wanted to make an example of the idea to submit for clarification for a patent, the example could contain bogus information just to establish a visual layout.

2012-05-08 05:19:43 PM

Uchiha_Cycliste: Draq: The juicy part, for those who can't get to the article:

Lincoln was requesting a patent for "The Gazette," a system to "keep People aware of Others in the Town." He laid out a plan where every town would have its own Gazette, named after the town itself. He listed the Springfield Gazette as his Visual Appendix, an example of the system he was talking about. Lincoln was proposing that each town build a centrally located collection of documents where "every Man may have his own page, where he might discuss his Family, his Work, and his Various Endeavors."

Holy shiat, it IS analog facebook.

To me it sounds like a hybrid of facebook and wikipedia. You can think of it as being more akin to the announcements section in many local newspapers. Lincoln was a tech geek during his lifetime.

2012-05-08 05:22:24 PM

Theaetetus: The_Six_Fingered_Man: Theaetetus: Nice work of fiction there.

Is the patent application still on file?

Not online, but if it existed, it would be in the physical archives, I'm sure.

It was allegedly filed after the 1836 fire that destroyed everything, before the 1877 fire that destroyed nothing, and before 1880, when we started issuing applications a Serial Number.

There'd be no easy way to look it up. If it did exist there'd be a microfilm copy in a ominous cave in PA and the paper copy in Springfield.

Also of note is that "The Gazette" or "Official Gazette" is the weekly publication that the USPTO publishes with every single patent that issued the past week. Coincidence?

2012-05-08 05:24:38 PM
My Uncle got a patent on a method of filing paperwork to protect intellectual property. Once they realized what was up, they sent him a letter saying it was retracted.
/He could probably still sue...everybody

2012-05-08 06:04:26 PM
I was finding the article somewhat interesting (not knowing any of the technical reasons it was impossible) until I got to:

He went on to propose that "each Man may decide if he shall make his page Available to the entire Town, or only to those with whom he has established Family or Friendship."

That pegged by BSometer.

2012-05-08 06:38:14 PM
Lincoln did actually receive a patent for a device for lifting boats, making him the only US president to hold a patent. I don't know why people feel the need to make crap up when reality is just as interesting.

2012-05-08 07:02:24 PM
I'm calling shenanigans on the claim language. "A system for..." sounds an awful lot like modern means+function claim language that was adopted in the 1950s.
