16 days.....

I am all for the wonders of technology and the potentials bionics might offer, but really ?????

Maybe she could have done it in 15 if she'd crawled.....

In a bionic suit? She probably would do better time using a Rascal Scooter.

Wake me up when she starts fighting crime and earns that bionic hero tag

I'm wondering whether the big limitation on this time was battery recharge cycle times.

Powered mechanical aid? The officials should've disqualified her before she even crossed the start line.

And confiscated her swag bag from the registration expo. No mini Luna Bars for you, cheater!

I can do it in my bionic suit with wheels in less time. How much is her effort versus the suit?

The headline is much more funny when you read it as follows:

Not news: Hottie flashes London Marathoner, News: She's paralyzed, Fark: She does it in a bionic suit

We can rebuild her- better, stronger, faster!!

I read that as "flashes London Marathon". Never saw someone flash in a bionic suit. Was looking forward to it.

Ironclad2: battery recharge cycle times.

likely. Next time just have a cart behind her packed with battery cells and a gps controller in the suit. She can nap and just let that baby go.

2012-05-08 01:13:10 PM
I could outfit a bed with wheels and GPS, so it would drive itself along that route. Would that qualify me to claim to have finished the London Marathon in my sleep?

You don't run a marathon unless you move yourself continuously until you finish. Bonus points for historical/mythological accuracy if you die immediately afterward.

Man, what is with all the hate in this thread? I guess a bunch of people are jealous of the attention a crippled woman is getting for completing a physical feat.

Call me cynical, but I really don't get these artificial "accomplishments". Don't get me wrong, I think it's great that she has a means to get around even though she is paralyzed - but completing a marathon...in 16 days? You could have just walked 26 miles in your day-to-day activities and I'd be more impressed that you could HAVE day-to-day activities while standing upright. Walking along a course for more than two weeks after the event finished is not an accomplishment. If she finished within the pack, that's another thing entirely (of course, then I'd be saying she had an unfair advantage).

Ah yes. Gizmodo. Part of the Gawker family of ridiculously heavy scripted websites. This was one of those rare occasions I thought wasting the thirty seconds or so to allow the important scripts to read TFA would be worth it. I was wrong... again.

F*ck Gawker.

It's not hate man, it's ANTI-HYPE. Is this really an accomplishment? for who? the woman, the tech, or the battery manufacturer?

nickerj1: The headline is much more funny when you read it as follows:

That's how I read and wanted see how the bionic suit made that happen. Was disappoint.

2012-05-08 01:32:12 PM
Why is she having to use crutches in the pic in the article? I thought that these bionic suits were designed for the person to walk free of tethers or other aids?

/Still awesome that she was able to walk so far.
//Just seems like the suits have a long, long way to go if the person still needs crutches.

2012-05-08 01:34:55 PM
Looks like the charge was good for about two miles a day. That's a fairly decent amount out of a demo suit. Assuming she never fell over or the like, that's solid work by the suit's design team. The price tag and battery life aren't that great, but what do you expect out of something that is beta at best.

The scary thing is there is this whole community that looks down on any paraplegic that doesn't want to be in a wheel chair. Blogs like this one will be tearing up that woman in short order and screaming about how the cure industry is trying to force them out their wheelchair. There is a whole community based the idea that being in a wheelchair is just as mobile as being bipedal. Confuses the hell out of me, if medical technology can make everyone bipedal we can do away with things like handicap ramps on busses and the like which in turn reduces the cost of the busses and saves society money.

It's hype for the program that did all the programming and design related to balance and motion. Covering a 26.2 miles without the woman tipping over or being injured is pretty impressive. There are a lot of robots out there that couldn't cover 26.2 miles and they don't have to compensate for the human's own movements (like if she moves her torso, the suit has to rebalance to compensate). Basically they provided their design/programming for keeping her upright over a fairly long course and that's a nice milestone. Battery, cost, and land speed all appear to need work though. Still upright and moving is a big step.

How can a paralyzed biatch be hot? Even she was a walker, she is a 3 or 4 at best; definitely just someone to empty your balls into and be done with it ASAP.

Glad to see I wasn't the only one turned on by a thong wearing, vodak drinking cyborg.

I could compete that marathon in my bionic Miata. It interprets my limited motor function to move me around. And it allows me to go places that I couldn't under normal walking conditions. Ever try to walk down the middle lane of the Interstate? Can't do it for very long, says I. But in my bionic Miata, I can.

When OP calls her a hottie, actual pic in article is expected to be hot. Cute, but still not hot.
