The problem is that telling someone they should eat healthier or exercise more carries with certain connotations. It boils down a personal attack; what they really mean is "You're fat, and that makes you less deserving of happiness."

We need to show more understanding and foment healthy self-esteem. Believe me, they'll need that healthy sense of self-worth as they age and become more prone to feelings of guilt over burdening the country's health care systems.

I don't think telling people is the problem. I access to healthy food and the cost of healthy food is the problem.

BMI shouldn't be used to gauge their fitness. I work with a bunch of skinny-fat chicks. The probably couldn't run a mile or take the stairs up to the 3rd floor in our building.

You're not obese, but perhaps a bit dense. That works out as a BMI of 23.7. That falls solidly into the healthy category.

Most of this is DERP, but you do hit on a point - that we keep telling people to "eat healthy", but we've been defining "healthy" the wrong way for the last 2 or 3 decades now. We shouldn't be worrying about "low-fat" or "low-calorie", and instead should be trying to eliminate much of the sugars/carbs from our diet, and cultivate a more "primal" diet that primarily consists of vegetables, nuts, fruits, and meat/proteins, without much regard for cholesterol numbers or the higher fat content which our bodies can either use for energy or pass out in our waste. Excess blood sugars, OTOH, basically scour the inside of your arteries and are the root cause of heart disease, obesity, and diabetes.

No, I'm NOT a doctor, but this guy is, and he's admitting he was wrong. The rest of us should do the same.

You say 'absolutely useless', I say 'useful as a population statistic'. Yes, there are exceptions - but as a baseline to measure the 'untrained' population - what would you prefer? Height and weight are the most readily available measurements that can be universally provided. Would some amalgamation of body fat, V02 Max and resting heart rate be more accurate? Of course. Is that remotely as easy to compile for a population and use as an indicator? Clearly not.

BMI gets a little scary towards the middle of "healthy" for someone like me, who is 5'6" ... I'm 200 pounds right now, which falls into Obese, and yeah, I'm a big guy ... but BMI is telling me I should be a maximum of 155 pounds and to get to a BMI of 21, I should be 130 pounds?

If I weighed that much, I'd be sickly ... seriously, 130 pounds is a normal weight for a 5'-6" male???? Holy christ ...

Always thought that BMI was a useful tool for assessing the relative health of entire populations, but wouldn't necessarily be a good gauge for many individuals, as is outlined above.

Now for my personal opinion, most obese people I know would say 'sure, I could lose a few pounds, but I'm not fat'. This is primarily driven by denial, and the fact that everyone around them is just as fat as they are. As a society, we've lost perspective on what a healthy person (weight wise) looks like. Not going to be an IFG (internet fit guy), but my family routinely tells me I'm too skinny when my weight is on the higher end of the healthy, non-overweight range.

Yeah... no you wouldn't. I have a buddy that height and he weighs120-125. I'm 5'10 and weigh 135. We're both lean, musclyy guys. Neither of us looks sickly. At least, as long as I don't shave my head.

Our culture is making people fat.

The people want instant gratification. They want excess. They want Double Whoppers with cheese and bacon and extra mayo with a king sized fry and a Diet Coke.

They want to be able to waddle into a 7/11 and waddle out with a candy bar and a giant Slurpee that they refilled the cup the bought and saved 30 cents. That's a deal right there.

They want their triple macchiato super sugar syrup coffee(half soy milk, half fat free milk please, they're watching their diet).

They want their 24 oz steaks served with baked potato drenched in sour cream and butter and a side of broccoli smothered in cheese.

They want to do all that, and be able to sit at the computer or watch TV, and be able to drive their car out to the mailbox at the end of the drive way, all that and more.

Because this is America damn it, and who the fark are you to tell them all that excess is what is making them fat?

I agree - there is also the tenuous relationship between appearing fit and being fit. I recently became associated with a population of what I'll call 'fitness psychos' - and despite having a ridiculously wide variety of body types and appearances, the one thing they have in common is their physical capacity. Guys I would have considered skinny little punks who are deadlifting 400 lbs, and guys I would have considered over-muscled lunks who can run an endless series of six minute miles.

For myself I realized that while I appeared to be very physically fit (six-pack, bulging muscles, etc and yes I'm overstating) - my actual fitness level in terms of capacity was (and is) very, very poor.

The human form covers an awfully wide range of healthy possibilities, and as such any averages will necessarily be inaccurate for lots of people. That doesn't make the averages worthless, just limited.

It's no surprise. I think a lot of it comes down to parenting. Most families have both parents working and don't have time to cook a normal dinner anymore. On top of that, they don't tell their kids to stop eating 6 twinkies everyday.

I also believe they are getting rid of or reducing the amount of recess for kids in Elementary schools. When the kids are obese at such a young age, it only gets worse when they grow older.
