If they quit running away from their problems to the US and maybe tried to support their own country. nah, that's just ridiculous!

They may be at the top of the AL Central, but Cleveland really is a third world hell hole.

2012-05-08 11:40:08 AM
Wasn't it filmed in Cleveland?

What is it with India and lepers? It's 2012 and still 80% of the population consists of lepers.

They should have The Hulk destroy the Taj Mahal in the next film.

For a tired trope a lot of western aid workers seem to be in the subcontinent judging by the number of kidnappings. If there was nothing to do there you'd think they'd find a better place to hang out.

Slum dog millionaire must have really grinded their gears

Here's a tip, India:

Stop being a sh*thole.

Why are Indians acting like they live in Bangladesh?

2012-05-08 11:52:58 AM
So, India has a rich cultural heritage of poverty that they are tired of the west exploiting, except when such exploitation wins an Oscar, or brings millions of jobs to their shores....

2012-05-08 11:55:16 AM
I wish Bruce Banner had been depicted working in a tech help hotline center and Hulking up when some old lady forgets to plug in her computer.

2012-05-08 11:55:23 AM
"Sub" is no idle prefix when describing that part of the Asian continent.

2012-05-08 11:55:41 AM
Have any of the offended Indians actually ever been to India to see how slummy India is?

2012-05-08 11:56:28 AM
Rio is a beautiful city with a rich cultural heritage too, doesn't change the fact a large number of people live in a shanty town on its outskirts.

2012-05-08 11:56:35 AM
"Kolkata has a rich culture and heritage, and a filmmaker should respect that," he told the Hindustan Times. "There are two scenes about India and they only show slums. It could have been done in better taste."

So they should have given a more accurate representation of the segregation between the rich and the poor?

2012-05-08 11:57:09 AM
You should hear what the Chitauri have to say about the movie.

2012-05-08 11:57:44 AM
And where were all the call centers?

2012-05-08 11:58:25 AM
From what I've seen both on No Reservations but also through my high school friend whose family lives there, India's got a lot of really nice places and is becoming pretty modern. I haven't seen Avengers yet so I can't comment on the scene, but for all the up and coming modernism, they've still got the slums too... so maybe they should look into that.

2012-05-08 11:59:17 AM
Being upset over your depiction in a superhero film for less than five minutes is extreme douchiness.

Quit watching and biatching about western movies and clean your slums.

2012-05-08 11:59:24 AM
Yeah, because they're always so worried about depicting the west accurately ;)

2012-05-08 12:00:34 PM
To be fair, India is only a hellhole for a couple of the castes.

2012-05-08 12:01:14 PM
Given India's history, I do understand how Indians might be a little sensitive about depictions of paternalistic white people. That said, the slums in India are places where people need help, and probably good places to hide out, so it seems like a pretty legit plot point. I know I would not object on "national pride" grounds to a Bollywood film in which an Indian doctor on the lam was running an STD clinic near a trailer park in Cheyenne Wyoming.

/ And teaching the tweakers how to dance, no doubt

I agree that this complaint is silly, but your argument is a bad one. If someone was in blackface for just one scene, that wouldn't be cool.

That analogy is so far off base it's not even in the same stadium

Gimme a farking break. Dude was hiding there, not on some mission to save Indians. The "saving" Indians was purely something to do while in hiding.

And if they don't like that, how do they feel about the "Don't go, send a gift" episode of Seinfeld?

What part of New Mexico resembles a slum in India?

"When will Hollywood stop cashing in on the poverty here?"

Probably when there is no more poverty, Mr. "Software Professional"!

Every country in the world that doesn't have a white majority is a shiathole. Except Japan.

They didnt show the entire country. Nor did they dwell on the poverty. I also didnt see a subtitle stating "This is what the whole country looks like". As a matter of fact my uneducated ass had no idea where he was actually hiding out. It was just someplace that needed help. I'm not up in arms because it depicted all of New York as a giant metal city.

Except this is depicting a habitat and you just depicted a racial profile. This is like people from a poor, war-torn African nation being angry at film makers for depicting an African country as being poor and war-torn. I didn't hear any biatching about District 9 or maybe they didn't think the alien camp was an allegory.

The part east of Arizona and west of Texas.

How dare filmmakers point out how shiatty India is. They should lie about it instead, and that way all the poor, miserable millions that live in India's slums will feel much better about themselves despite being in a rigid, institutionalized caste system that allows little to no upward mobility. Here is an idea Indians--if you don't like your slums, do something about them.

I don't get bent out of shape when the southern US is depicted as a backwater hellhole inhabited by inbred, fundamentalist country yokels. I live here, I know it is populated by inbred yokels. No sense in burying your head in the sand about these things.

What about MI:4? That displayed the richest 1% of India. Shouldn't the two films cancel out?

Never saw anyone with Leprosy until I went to Kolkata last year.

Sorry but, if film makers are looking to shoot a scene in a deplorable, crime and disease-infested slum, and your country is the first one that springs to mind, that's your problem to fix, not theirs.

Exactly this. It's not where he was, but why he was there.

South Korea, Singapore, Brunei, and Barbados might take issue with that.

I'm sorry, but being a doctor for rich people would not have been nearly as interesting. Unless he was Michael Jackson's doctor.
