superfudge73: tblax: Detinwolf: What about MI:4? That displayed the richest 1% of India. Shouldn't the two films cancel out?

I don't know if you realized it but you just accidentally admitted to seeing MI:4

That movie was the shiat.

Truthfully I didn't give it a chance. I couldn't handle another installment of "Tom Cruise Running"

A million times this.

(notsureifserious.gif) lols i guess you've never been to:

new jersey, baltimore, mobile, appalachia..etc

There are shiatholes everywhere, it just depends on how isolated from it you are

[media.comicvine.com image 604x453]

In case you're serious: India is, scientifically speaking, a shiathole

Its pretty telling that India is actually ranked lower than Iraq.

Any country that lets bodies openly rot on the ground in public areas is a shiathole.

2012-05-08 01:19:32 PM

vernonFL: Wasn't it filmed in Cleveland?

Maybe. There were several scenes in that movie that screamed "shot on a sound stage", and the stuff in India was the most glaring one. The part with Black Widow in a chair had some way to obvious set extensions too.

cmb53208: So India's offended by how we portray their slums? Fair enough; I'm offended by their ability to screw up even the simplest customer service call, and their ability to send the shiattiest tippers on the planet out into the world.

I remember in college hanging out w/ some freshman exchange student from India, a meet and greet, get to know your major thing. He had never heard of tipping. It was completely alien to him. What I didn't understand is how that didn't come up in his orientation. My orientation covered a lot of stuff, and I was coming from the same state, let alone country. How could they not mention tipping?

South Korea, Singapore, Brunei, and Barbados might take issue with that.

I don't know if that's a good example. They're prosperous, but it's a country that still throws gay people into jail and has little in the way of free speech.

"It has become a trend in the West to show Indian slums and a Westerner trying to help the poor here. When will Hollywood stop cashing in on the poverty here?"

When you fix your poverty.

Tell ya what, when you finally get the majority of your population living in homes with running water and toilets and get rid of that whole pesky caste system, THEN you can start calling out other countries. OK???

/I've been to india. I haven't seen that many people openly talking a shiat on the side of the road since i passed by that ICP concert.

The "what is a shiathole" measure the UN uses really measures only income, education, and life expectancy. It's certainly open to interpretation.

Poverty in New Mexico is stubbornly resistant to bleeding heart schemes. Lovely state, however. The landscape is, as they say, enchanting.

I wouldn't call Habitat a "bleeding heart scheme". It's a pretty good program and people have to work to earn what they're given. It's not a "sit on a couch and collect a check" sort of situation.

I'm pretty sure he was making more of a comment about New Mexico poverty than about Habitat.

Anyone who saw the movie wouldn't think so. We saw Bruce Banner in a very poor part of India or Bangladesh.

It was one damn scene, get over it.

I agree that this complaint is silly, but your argument is a bad one. If someone was in blackface for just one scene, that wouldn't be cool.

Why not? Sounds cool to me?

Well... I can honestly say that was the first time I've seen dogs eating an actual human body. The disturbing thing was that it didn't bother me as much as I would've guessed. It was sad, but clinical.

And yah, I got food poisoning, even when only eating in luxurious hotels.

Did you eat anything raw like salad? I made that mistake just once (also at a luxurious hotel) and I definitely paid for it. I realized after the fact that I got sick because they aren't washing the greens in bottled water. Remember, spices in India are your friend. Next time, get the reddest, spicest dish you can handle and, while you might have acid reflux issues, you'll avoid food poisoning.

Wow...just wow. I showed my coworkers. We work in a place where death is NBD but even this made some people want to puke, myself included.

Reminds me of one girl on Facebook who was shocked that something like Kony was going on. Legitimately shocked. If she sees these pictures, she may just have a stroke.

I have an Indian co-worker who claims that there is no poverty in India, there are only lazy people. She told me that the school she went to was the best in the world - I had never heard of it (and can't remember now), but apparently it's better than Cambridge, Oxford, Yale, Harvard, MIT, Edinburgh, St. Andrews, Princeton, the Sorbonne and Berkeley combined, because there are a lot of people who go there, so it must be good. Everything in India is better, in every way. There is a wonderful sewage system, it's just that lazy people have no manners. There is healthcare for all, but lazy people don't make the effort to go to a doctor. If people are poor or powerless it's because they were bad in a previous life. She also calls her guru every day to get her horoscope, so it's all based on hard fact obviously. Even though she is palpably bugnuts, I asked her once if India was heaven, why was she in the UK? ......crickets.....

If many Indian people are actually of that mindset, it's no surprise that India has such godawful slums - because they deserve it, apparently.

2012-05-08 03:20:36 PM

Martian_Astronomer: Given India's history, I do understand how Indians might be a little sensitive about depictions of paternalistic white people. That said, the slums in India are places where people need help, and probably good places to hide out, so it seems like a pretty legit plot point.

I'm not so sure about that. I mean, if you're the only white face in a sea of brown, and everybody in a ten mile radius knows that you're the go-to guy if they have a fever that can't be cured by more cowbell, then you're not hiding!

2012-05-08 03:23:15 PM
Way to miss the point about Banner. He's not going to be living it up with the rich and famous in India because the guy is trying to hide. So, slums it is. Just like if his story took place in New York City instead, he would be living in some hole in wall, rat's nest rather than 5th ave. Only then Americans would not be complaining about showing the bad side of New York because they get it.
