You don't pay much attention to world events, do you?

Dear India. You still have a strongly engrained caste system.

You might want to see to that before biatching when someone films how the lower caste lives and broadcasts it around the world.

Genju: Wayne 985: BowtoMogul: Who gives a shiat?
It was one damn scene, get over it.

I agree that this complaint is silly, but your argument is a bad one. If someone was in blackface for just one scene, that wouldn't be cool.

Except this is depicting a habitat and you just depicted a racial profile. This is like people from a poor, war-torn African nation being angry at film makers for depicting an African country as being poor and war-torn. I didn't hear any biatching about District 9 or maybe they didn't think the alien camp was an allegory.

That wasn't the meat of my argument. My argument was that, "Well, if it only appears for one scene, it's not an issue" is not... well, a good argument.

2012-05-08 12:18:39 PM
Everyone gets degraded by the media and everyone is a stereotype. The only difference between any group that is crying about their most recent issue and those of us who don't complain is that we are convinced that complaining is for wimps. Which it is. So stop it.

They didnt show the entire country. Nor did they dwell on the poverty. I also didnt see a subtitle stating "This is what the whole country looks like". As a matter of fact my uneducated ass had no idea where he was actually hiding out. It was just someplace that needed help. I'm not up in arms because it depicted all of New York as a giant metal city.

Point taken.

The slums depicted in the movie were no worse than slums in certain parts of the US. The Avengers could have included an Indian doctor working alongside Banner, but then they went "fark it, this tiny scene probably isn't worth the effort." Besides, Banner working alone as far from civilized places as possible was totally in character.

They should be offended that he decided Calcutta was the most disposable, Hulk-friendly place on earth.

MI:4 was awesome. Maybe you're confusing it with another movie?

Grow up India. Everyone has a preconceived notion of every place in the world which is based on fact. That fact is you haven't worked very hard to eliminate the slums. Quit biatching about a 5 minute scene in a super hero movie that portrays your slum problem which you refuse to fix.

The accepted terms are now 'casino' or 'computer'.

Jacque: Never saw anyone with Leprosy until I went to Kolkata last year.

I was in Kolkata in January. Never saw a leper. I saw quite a bot of low cost housing, but not what I'd call a slum. Hell, I've seen similarly low cost housing in parts of large cities in the US.
That said, there was trash everywhere, all sorts of stray animals, and well, their penchant for using the bathroom even if an actual bathroom did not exist in that location.... cheers

Yes, because everyone knows a deeply entrenched caste system is a sure fire indicator for socialism.

Alphax: That makes no sense. They have lots of very poor people because.. they care about their people too much?

No, India has lots of poor people because socialism destroys wealth, and keeps people locked in a perpetual state of poverty.

The people who rule India do not care about poor people. They only pretend to.

The result is shanty towns. Families living on hills of garbage. It's a disgrace, an embarrassment to humanity.

Here in the U.S., we have addressed that problem by electing competent representatives who express common interests of constituents who share the same or similar points of view.

hailin: That fact is you haven't worked very hard to eliminate the slums.

You know that's a near impossibility right?

By 'eliminate the slums' you mean bring it up to the American middle class ideal or better.

China's only managing to do that for a tiny fraction of their population and it's already causing the rest of the world's economy to collapse under the weight of their need.

The US and Europe has managed to eat the lion's share of the world's resources for so long that they tend to think the opulence they live in is, should be or *can* be the norm.

It can't.

The best India can hope to do is maybe put in some public housing projects.

Good friend of mine was born in Kolkata, sent to the US for schooling when he was 15.
He's 31 now and only went home once. When he did, he returned with Girardiasis from all the unsanitary food & drink.

Swears he'll never go back.

Bengali actor Rituparna Sengupta said that the scenes -- which were filmed in New Mexico -- belied a certain ignorance on the part of the filmmakers. ""Kolkata has a rich culture and heritage, and a filmmaker should respect that," he told the Hindustan Times. "There are two scenes about India and they only show slums. It could have been done in better taste."

A software professional also took issue with the plotline: "It has become a trend in the West to show Indian slums and a Westerner trying to help the poor here. When will Hollywood stop cashing in on the poverty here?"

Translation: "Why won't you guys ignore the slums like we want you to?! Look over here at these pretty, shiny things!"

We're not going to produce your tourist-bait propaganda for you, you twat.

scarmig: Dear India. You still have a strongly engrained caste system.

Hey.. my wife worked with a very biatchy Phd from a rich family in India that assured her that everyone is treated equally in India and the caste system is a lie. Even the servants that mopped her marble floors. Like family her servants were. Plus she didn't have to live near "dirty" Mexicans like her apartment in the US.

Since the movie is a documentary, they probably should have tried harder to portray India more accurately.

Considering that Banner was intentionally hiding in a shiathole so as to help the poor and be under the radar...I don't have a problem with this.

My dad lives out there at the moment. I went out to visit and saw a few cities.

They were all overcrowded, polluted and had the stink of raw sewage. There were many beautiful monuments, temples, castles and forts that showed you exactly how long the rich of india had been living in luxury while the poor live in, well, abject poverty. The country is also more than a little corrupt.

And yah, I got food poisoning, even when only eating in luxurious hotels.

Martian_Astronomer: Given India's history, I do understand how Indians might be a little sensitive about depictions of paternalistic white people. That said, the slums in India are places where people need help, and probably good places to hide out, so it seems like a pretty legit plot point. I know I would not object on "national pride" grounds to a Bollywood film in which an Indian doctor on the lam was running an STD clinic near a trailer park in Cheyenne Wyoming.

/ And teaching the tweakers how to dance, no doubt

That sounds kind of cool.
