Are you saying that it's a bad thing?

This is really sad. I'm glad that he was able to promote the obesity problem in pets, but it really does drive home the idea of just how unhealthy it is for us, and animals. Our bodies are not evolved to be able to carry that much weight, and it effects just about every system of our body in a negative way.

Being obese isn't cute. It's not cuddly. It's not shapely, or huggable, or curvy. It's lethal. It will kill you.

That was my first thought as well when I read the headline. I've never heard the term "Rainbow Bridge" to mean "death" before. I'm only familiar with the border crossing at Niagara.

The Rainbow Bridge Poem

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Wait, so animals die so they can become food for other animals. Where do they go when they die from there? Wow, kind of twisted.

I am a hardhearted biatch. I have a hard time crying. When I need to be emotional for some reason or other, I read the last two paragraphs. It's about the only thing that can make me tear up on cue.

Also, I'd like to point out that the kittle died from kennel cough, not from obesity. It's the kitty equivalent of going into the hospital for a sleep study and contracting MRSA.

Kitty would still be alive if left with the owner or in foster care.

2 years old is still a baby. My cousin does this with his cats, just leaves a bin of dry food out for the cats to graze, but for some reason they're all pretty fit for inside cats. Most if not all the blame must fall on the owners, unless that cat hit up the local 7/11, bought, and opened up the hotdogs itself.

2012-05-08 12:11:30 PM
It sucks that this kitteh has passed, especially at such a young age.

Too often, pets aren't treated as they should be. We feed them in excees with the idea that we are being good to them but then when it comes time to play (to work off all that and stay healthy) some pet owners don't then step up to the plate.

Animals then get weight and or other health problems related to overeating and underactivity.

Dogs and cats need exercise, whether it be a cool toy we give them or playing directly with them. They also have emotional needs and usually want some sort of attention.

If every time a pet asks for attention, it gets food instead, it's a disservice to the animal. Giving them food because they won't shut up isn't love.

It wouldn't surprise me if animals used food like some of us humans do to satisfy some emotional needs.
There's no reason why Meow should EVER have gotten even remotely close to 39 pounds

I used to jump off that bridge so much(many of those times on lsd, man that was great. No we knew completely what we were doing, and weren't going to be a cautionary tale). Then one year they had park rangers in boats waiting to hear a plop in the water and would rush to make sure your fun was spoiled. In the same picture you provided, on the obscured right side of the bridge is a big rock people jump off of called chicken. Don't know if it's the same one you're talking about. And from where the photographer is, behind him to the left is a cliff to jump off of called 'big tit'. Lived in Wholesome Folsom for a lot of the nineties.

I feed my four dogs table scraps, nary an obese to be seen. Even the Grandma dog (14 yo dachshund!) is thn and spry-ish. But they have a large yard to run and terrorize the fences at every yelp.

I agree that a beggin' dog is NOT good. The dogs know to leave me alone when I've got food (thou, stares from a distance is allowed). It took a kick or two to get them to remember that, but...

And you need to pull head from ass. Your parents live as they want. You DON'T go foisting your animals off on them, and then complaining publicly about the way they treat them. Ingrate.

Also, if you spend your time watching and worrying about your pets health and happiness, you have to consider who is the pet here. The more intelligent may actually ruling the roost.

Agreed. I can't imagine there wasn't a single apartment in the area that wouldn't let you have a dog. In college I paid a $1200 deposit and an extra $50 per month in rent so I could have my cats. It meant working 35 hours a week while going to school full time, but I did it without complaint. If you picked cheap housing over your dog you are a horrible pet owner.
