Does anyone really use these robot vacuums? I can't see anyone wanting a subpar vacuum that roams around and get caught in area rug fringes.

My parents has one. It sits, unplugged, in the corner of the dining room, having been used exactly once.

We use our all the time. If you have a puppy, make sure to check for dog shiat before starting it up in random corners of the house. Especially if fur rugs are nearby. Ask me how I know...

My mom has one. She tries to use it, but it takes very regular maintenance and will get hung up easily. So it'll go for long periods of time without being used. They definitely need BETTER house cleaning robots. Really, one that would pick up, vacuum, dust and do dishes and I'd be happy for life.

It's time for robots to make our lives easier, damn it.

I have a "Neato". It maps rooms/floorplan with lasers, returns to it's base station to charge itself when it's done or runs low, and cleans the entire first floor of my house automatically 3 times a week.

I'm a bachelor with all hardwood flooring. If I don't have robots cleaning my floors, it won't get done very often. Plus, robots are cool.

I had 3 Roombas roaming around the house. They weren't very reliable or efficient, and they required a lot of upkeep, but they got the job done.

Now I have 1 Neato XV-11 that does the same job faster, better, and with less maintenance on my part. The Neato is more expensive, but they are far more efficient, so you don't need as many of them.

If I was going to spend $1600 on a vacuum(not that I ever would), I'd get the latest and greatest Kirby. I don't need my vacuum to talk to me.

If it malfunctions, does it go around reorganizing everything while repeating "A place for everything and everything in its place"?

I have three problems with the Neato:
A) No side brush, so it doesn't quite hit the edge. It gets close, but not close enough in corners
B) Basically refuses to pickup anything bigger than dust -- it just pulls around bits of paper/etc. It can suck it up but the brush doesn't force larger debris toward the bag efficiently
C) Has only one side sensor so it always travels around the room in the same direction and leaves a leeward side in interior edges

Otherwise it's awesome, and significantly better than a Roomba in most cases. It has a reasonably intelligent cleaning plan and navigation so it can cover your whole house, not just one room. It has decent suction. It tells you when it needs to be emptied. It doesn't get bound up with hair/etc. It's powerful enough to pull itself off cords if it sucks one up. It tries hard to get behind obstructions.

That being said, the Roomba does a better job some rooms because it has a side brush, is slightly shorter, picks up larger debris (it has separate debris and dust collectors) and doesn't always approach from same direction (though it too prefers to drive along the edge with the side brush and can leave leeward areas).

In any case, with my Neato I spend maybe 4 minutes a week dealing with it being stuck on something or needing to be emptied/etc. and my floor is cleaner than it ever was when I was in charge of vacuuming. Literally the only manual floor cleaning I do now is occasionally brushing crud away from the wall/corner with my foot so robot can reach it next time it runs.
