the fatness of black women has often functioned as both explicit political statement and active political resistance.

Ah yes, you aren't lazy and lacking in self control, you're just fighting The Man.

"I am fed up with the little denial phrases they have too, you know? "Oh, I'm not fat. I'm husky." Yeah yeah yeah. "I'm portly." Ah, yeah yeah yeah. "I'm stout." Oh, okay okay. "I'm big-boned." You're big-assed, okay?! Dinosaurs are big-boned! Put the fork down!... And they keep finding more denial stuff. There's a doctor now (I'd like to see what size he is), a doctor in LA who came up with a theory that being fat is actually a virus. Ah, I guess I'm the asshole here, right? Because ever other virus we know of is a flesh-eating virus, right? The common cold, AIDS, cancer, but he found the one that makes you bigger. Okay, yeah yeah yeah. That's all that fat person in each family needs. Now we're at Thanksgiving with the fat person going, "Well, I'm not actually over-eating. OM NOM NOM NOM NOM. I'm trying to keep the virus at bay. OM NOM NOM NOM NOM."

By contextualizing fatness within the African diaspora, she invites us to notice that the fat black woman can be a rounded opposite of the fit black slave

Has this women seen any of the early portrayls of black women in film? They were almost all fat. In some contracts with studios they had to stay fat.

Even if we were to pretend that weight was a conscious choice (it isn't) choosing to be "fat" fits with the stereotype of what we think of slavery for black women.

2012-05-08 10:40:05 AM
Why is this stupid? She addresses many cultural pointers that lead to a very different view of fat among black women than whites, and the costs, and uses it as a call to embrace fitness instead of fatness.

"How many middle-aged white women fear their husbands will find them less attractive if their weight drops to less than 200 pounds? I have yet to meet one."

I seriously never considered that black women wanted to be fat, not just curvy with a badonkadonk. That would explain a lot of what I see in South Carolina.

How does that speak of her vapidness. Even if it did, how could it possibly invalidate what she writes. Are you saying it's untrue?

It seems to me that she wrote that to show that her husband isn't someone who lacks education or wealth -- that is, it's not a matter of just poverty or lack of information, that it cuts across class lines.

How did you interpret it?

Anything that requires time is not free. If you're poor, you may be working so much there's no time for exercise or your brain is too fried. And your access to equipment is going to be limited or non-existent. And you certainly don't have the money to hire a personal trainer.

/not saying equipment and trainer are necessary, but they certainly help especially for those with little self motivation

Sorry but "hitting the gym" or exercising in the first place tends to be something that more affluent folks do. They have the money, the time and most importantly, those two things give them the inclination to do it.
When you're raised to think that life is one long struggle and that oh hey- just wait for the the check to come in the mail- would you go to the gym?

Why would you NEED to go to the gym. Exercise = park in the back of the lot and walk farther to the store. WALK to the store if it's near by. Do any of 100 things you were taught in gym class while watching TV. Being active doesn't require a gym or money.

bullshiat. i am broke, have been for a while and due to crippling medical bills, will be for a long time. i am in no way, shape of form fat. I run (free), watch what i eat and how much (cheaper than fast food) and attend a couple of community yoga classes a week ($6). poor is not a farking excuse to be fat.

2012-05-08 11:14:50 AM
I remember reading that even in ancient Rome bigger women were valued. Well even bigger people. It ment that because you were bigger you could afford to eat more therefore you were rich. So fat was a status symbol.

You're missing my point. Perhaps I wasn't clear. I wasn't justifying what the article talks about. I was simply pointing out what I believe to be a cultural/financial truism: poor folks tend to (not every single one, mind you) not place a ton of importance in exercising and/or nutrition. It's just the truth.

Then again, whenever I go to mall, I see that white america doesn't seem to place a lot of importance on those things either. Seems to me, most folks just like to eat and procreate. Fark ME these people have a lot of kids. Nothing else to do, I suppose.

See this is the interesting point contested in TFA; that the "poor" excuse isn't enough to overcome (as you have, and good on you) but instead there's an overarching desire to remain thick.

But seriously, people... there's wanting a full, womanly figure and there's walking a few flights of stairs instead of the elevator; there's parking at the end of the lot, there's taking a walk at lunchtime. Things that won't make you thin but might just keep your heart from exploding.

No, my one black friend is a different woman. She's from a different high school, you don't know her.

I've heard that in some areas of the continent if a woman gets a little fat in a short amount of time it's a red flag that she might be on AIDS medication so men intentionally try to avoid particular hot fat/chubby women.

Why did she need to explain that her husband is a lawyer? What does that even mean?

Seriously... if you were in a converstion- that had nothing to do with the practice of law- and someone went out of their way to make sure you knew their significant other was a lawyer... you wouldn't think that's a bit strange?

Also "lawyer" does not mean "isn't someone who lacks education or wealth". Many lawyers lack education and wealth.

My father is a lawyer. Never once have I found the need to say "my lawyer father." Except in rare cases where I'm discussing corporate real estate law with someone... in which case I'll say "hey, I grew up with a father that did that for a living, and he told me so and so about that particular situation."

This fat guy went to Jamaica quite a few years ago and stayed with a friend way up in the hills - about an hour from Negril.
Women were after me left and right thinking I was rich since it took a lot of food to sustain my portly figure.
Unfortunately I had a girl friend at home and didn't have any of the brown sugar. Still kicking myself to this day.

The women there were all fit from walking up and down the steep hills - and probably from chasing fat white American men.

Coincidental that we're talking about black people losing weight, and that my friend with a recent and profound weight loss happens to be black. Not a surprise, a coincidence. You may notice the difference in my word choice "coincidentally" vice "surprisingly." English: difficult.

downstairs: I have a more nuanced definition of "education". But sure, by the dictionary definition... lawyers have a lot of "education".

Sh*t on lawyers at your leisure, but would you, in general agree that the average lawyer represents neither the education level nor worldview of the average impoverished person? She used her husband to say "this attitude, that many would assume is a 'hood' thing is pervasive throughout black America, even those that are far removed from the hood."

Are you thinking she's just name dropping? "My husband, the lawyer, ohh look at me!" Really?

I know a few scumbag lawyers, but are we really now arguing about whether or not lawyers are "educated?" We must not have had a good "your college degree is worthless" thread lately, so that everyone can brag about how they're better than everyone else. Someone must be going through withdrawal.

The woman was talking about how black men like fat women, including well-educated black men, like her husband, the lawyer.
