Well it is> the home of the king of beers.

Wrong, subby. You have it bassackwards. St. Louis has checkmated the rest of the country, not the other way around.

// Not from St. Louis

Oops...screwed that up. Oh well.

relaxitsjustme: One town's very like another when your head's down over your pieces, brother

It's a drag, it's a bore, it's really such a pity when you're looking at the board - not looking at the city.

St. Louis only pawn... in game of life.

Two guys set down to play a game of chess. One says "hey, do you want to make this interesting?" The other guy says "yes". So they got up and took a walk.

St. Louis already got pawned by the Kings a couple days ago.

The World Chess Hall of Fame is in St. Louis? Isn't that like having the Elvis Commemorative Plate Museum in Florence, IT?

Doesn't 14.5 feet sound kind of small for the "world's largest chess piece?" I would think a college chess club could make a 15-foot piece over a drunken weekend.

I was expecting a 30 or 40-footer. Leaving disappointed.

2012-05-08 02:00:38 AM
Can you play chess with it? If not then it should not be considered the largest chess piece in the world.

Pretty sure there's a local pawn shop around here with one out front that's at least 20'.

No doubt soon to be burned down by some anti-monarchist Tea Baggers.

FTFA: "It's 14.5 feet high, weighs 2,280 pounds and is yet another example of the seemingly unlimited financial resources to make St. Louis the country's chess capital."

Once again, the mysterious cabal that is Big Chess leaves its mark on an unsuspecting world.

There is actually a competition about this? And we evolved this way??

I just hope it's not some Trojan chess piece, filled with nerds that will jump out at night and take over the city.

Would a geometrician / chess fiend please be so kind as to calculate and reveal the size of the squares and the board that a piece of this size would be found on, were it a standard-sized playable piece?? thanks ...

Hector Remarkable: I just hope it's not some Trojan chess piece, filled with nerds that will jump out at night and take over the city.

Tomorrow morning the City will awaken to the horror of crop circles mowed in their municipal parks, and the hedges around City hall neatly trimmed into cryptic mathematic topiaries.

I was thinking the same thing. Not impressed.

I sense a troubling "chess piece gap." Someone will have to remedy this. Perhaps with a butter sculpture.

One word:

Klaes Oldenburg.

2012-05-08 02:58:48 AM
thanks to R. G. Ross Construction, a local company that formed the piece in a secret location in the Gravois Bluffs shopping center

Farkin' secret locations, how do they work?

I guess since after we lost the Bowling Hall of Fame and all we had left was the Dog Museum they needed to do something here.

14.5ft? That's all? You know, if you had a spare few hundred dollars & a desire to get into the Guiness Book that wouldn't be all that hard to beat.

/what you'd do with a 15' tall chess piece after though is up in the air
//no local chess clubs to donate it to. At least none in their own permanent building

Amazing they don't mention how Webster University just became the new home of the Texas University Chess Team...

And they didn't even mention its anchor, Grand Master Susan Polgar, one of the three brilliant Polgar sisters....

So the other day I was at a chess tournament and afterwards we all went out to the hotel lobby to talk about the day. I guess we were pretty exacted in a nerdy kind of way because eventually the hotel manager asked us to disperse.

"Why I asked, we're just talking about today's tournament?"

He replied. "Because I can't stand chess nuts boasting in a open foyer."

Where's that? (examines the map closer) A few blocks north of Barnes hospital. Huge place. Nice old neighborhoods around there.

The 14.5-foot piece was dedicated earlier in the morning. But by late afternoon had become bored, and went to the tavern for margaritas and darts.

Zeke and Cletus, the official mascots of St. Louis, will be confused by this.

Today I learned that the epicenter of the global chess community is apparently in St. Louis.

I would have figured it to be somewhere in Russia, or maybe NYC, but evidently not.

We're all just pawns in St. Louis' evil game of checkers.

Waiting for the episode where the visit St. Louis, sans Grandpa of course, go to the Bowling Hall of Fame and Homer actually refuses to eat St. Louis style pizza.
