At last count there were about 867,5309 Jennifers in my home town.

Hmmm. It does seem like there's been an increase in the incidence of twins over the last several years. Some of that is easily explainable, however. Any time I meet or hear about a woman who has fraternal twins in her mid-thirties or older--and there are quite a few of them I've met--I pretty much assume IVF.

FTFA: "You kind of wonder what was in the water back then," said softball coach Kent Doehrman.

I think I see a "60 Minutes" investigation in their future...

FTFA: Graduation might bring some relief to some of the staff at the school. Kent Doehrman coaches identical twins Courtney and Caroline Erickson in softball.

"I'd just call Erikson! And they'd both turn so that wasn't good enough. So they said coach, we'll wear different colors, we'll wear different ribbons. Well I'm color blind so that didn't help," said Doehrman.

I'm gathering that Coach Doehrman may not be the sharpest tack in the box... and he apparently can't keep a secret (refer back to his tainted water comment above).

Guess my mom wasn't on board with the idea though.

Yes, it will be interesting to see how death tracks down each one of them to their final destination, claiming back the lives that should never have been.

I don't mean this in any creepy sort of way, (have to head the other Farkers off there at the path) but there are 12 sets. Maybe as a fundraiser they could do a calendar.

2012-05-08 01:02:06 AM
They're not even all identical. With student enrollment of 3500 at grade 9-12, assume 1/4 of that are seniors at 875. With 12 twins that's about a rate of 1 out of 73. The national average for twin births are 1 out of 100. I'm not that impressed.

My daughter has twins, a boy and a girl, who will be three years old next month.

When they were babies, she got sick of people asking , "Oh, are they identical?" So, she started answering with, "Look, here's how you can tell them apart: Freyja has more hair and Jackson has a penis."

Some still didn't get it.

It's a statistical phenomenon...

I think the word the author was grasping for was 'anomonoly". Any observable occurance is a phenomonon. In my junior high school algebra class there were 26 girls an 1 boy. Now, that was an anomonly. And fun.

Since this is Georgia, what is the twincest ratio?

2012-05-08 01:52:41 AM
Statistically at least one of those twins have gotten frisky with each other. It's a proven scientific fact that incest between twins is common. Do you think it's the inbreeding in the south that causes more twin births or twin births that are causing more inbreeding?

Most of the new twin+ activity has been happening in places where people can afford the 10K+ price tag for in vitro fertilization. So Georgia is probably safe.

Based on your awesome spelling... and the abundance of girls... I'm guessing it was remedial algebra.

You do get points for taking two runs at "anomaly"... and it spelling it wrong... two different ways...

I have two grandnieces with variations of "Caitlin", neither spelt that way.

How much do you want to bet in about three years there's going to be about fifty per school graduating with that name?

I have a single co-worker in her early 40's who wanted to have a child solo. She got IVF and voila, she's now about to give birth to twin boys. She has a number of supportive friends but no family nearby to assist. She's really going to have her hands full...literally.

The linked article was headlined "32 heads are better than 26." But the two heads in the very front of the picture have got to be in the double bonus all by themselves. Imagine the poor ob/gyn doctor seeing not one but two of those pop out!

my brothers are twins and they pretty much hate each others guts. when they were in high school it was like a warzone in the house, they were always at each others throats. then finally they graduated and one of them joined the army and there was peace at last. they are fraternal, don't look that much alike, and have almost nothing in common, but the fact that they were "twins" made everyone at school assume they must be exactly alike, so they were constantly dealing with people treating them like "oh, your brother does this so i thought you did too, you guys are like twins right?" if i had to deal with that sort of crap everyday, i would hate my twin as well.

in fact, one of them is getting married this year, and i'm going to be the best man because he refuses to let his twin brother do it, even though most of his fiance's family expected that his "twin" would be the best man. the other brother might not even attend the wedding although my parents are trying to force him to go. so yeah, all twins don't get along.

FTA: GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. -
It's a statistical phenomenon, and it's happened 12 times in one senior class. Gwinnett County's Brookwood High School is boasting 12 sets of twins graduating in 2012.

I think the statistical phenomenon is that this happened in Gwinnett County and all of them are white.
