Maybe they were trying to make the windy city smell more fart-like

2012-05-07 08:49:42 PM
So then why didn't they hitch the carload of sulfur to a team of Handi-capable people and let them pull it through the city?

Or a squadron of old fat Teahadists could have pulled it by those bootstraps they're so fond of.

We've heavily subsidized the trucking, airline, and shipping industry. Railroad has gotten the shaft; the power of the railroad from 100 years ago is still stuck in peoples minds.

I know NS has a number of major plans to add track into and around Chicago. I think some of the big projects are going to be joint assets projects.

AMTRAK from Raleigh to Charlotte - scheduled to take 4 hrs is never less than 5. It's about 265 miles for an average speed of 53 mph - for light rail no hassles passenger no freight traffic.

Give up, just give up already.

Trains. aren't they the obsolete technology that only saves fuel by forcing all the idling consumption waste onto the backs of millions of motorists daily, waiting for them to ponderously lumber their way through the cities yet again?

Um, yeah.

That train shares the rails with EVERYTHING. Grade crossings, freight, weird curves, the works. Who in their right mind would take the train to Charlotte? It's 3 hours by car, easy, and you can leave whenever you want AND have your car when you get there. What am I missing? Trains are pointless.

I'll sit here until we get past the inevitable "but we can't solve problems because they're hard" and "but we can't tax the Rich as one day I'll be rich and then I won't be able to afford my 34th gold-plated Ford F-150."

All of our problems can be solved if we tax the rich and put people to work building infrastructure, period.

Now if you'll excuse me, i have to twist a note on my paasenger pigeon. I just made some johnny cake and need to let my sweetest know.

Who else here travels by train? I've never seen a delay of more than 15 minutes. That is usually in a city center where you have to go ahead, wait for a train to leave and back in to the station.

/Of course mudslides will randomly cancel the train here.

GoTarHeels: Trains are pointless.

The more trains we have, the less semi traffic, and the less hassle when one of those gas chuggers gets in your way or takes a good five minutes to go from a dead stop to ninth gear, which is a whole three miles per hour. And the roads might be better off since they don't have gigantic semis busting the pavement.

We'll need a lot more rail infrastructure if we're going to keep up with increasing demand. There's little doubt that rail is a much more efficient way in fuel terms to move things from one place to another, but we spent a lot of time abandoning old lines in the '70s and '80s that will need to be rebuilt (if the right of way still exists). If the ROW is still there, we'll have to convince people to give up the nice walking trail that goes through their McMansion subdivision to put tracks back where they used to be. Everybody loves to complain about train horns just about as much as they like to complain about airplane noise when they buy near the airport, that is only going to get worse too.

TL;DR: NIMBYs will keep needed railroad expansion at bay well into the future.

2012-05-07 09:50:25 PM
I wonder how much of Chicago's track has been torn up over the last 50 years. Trails projects are nice, but they are really an indication that we are ignoring our rail infrastructure.

Rather then less, we should be thinking like this project and building more rail lines, both to encourage transportation and freight.

Instead, we end up doing this in Iraq and Afghanistan instead of at home, because 9-11, Socialism, and flag pins.

Our infrastructure in this country, rail, telecommunications, roads and bridges, water, and sewer have all languished for far too long, and if we suddenly rediscovered maintenance tomorrow it will still take decades to bring everything back to a level where it should be, and half of our legislature fights this stuff at every turn.

I noticed another Amtrak hater from NC in the NYTimes comments. What's with the redneck rage over Amtrak down there?

Unless north carolina grew to the size of texas, there's no way its 265 miles point to point raleigh to charlotte.

Yeah well, for the last 40 years, Americans have always been better at creating acronyms than functional transportation solutions. What a glorious farkup. I expect nothing less from a country where even the idea of changing the color of the paper money gets so many people's undies in a knot. It`s hilarious listening to all the old people (and those unfortunate youngins that drink up the "back in my day" shiat) that think that words like progress and tax burden are dirty PC words.

No, it doesn't. You don't even know what you're talking about if you're calling Raleigh to Charlotte "light rail." Stop making up your own definitions.
