Any bets as to whether Chris Therien gets suspended/fired as well?

Suspension is official. Maybe we can have cup next year?

One game.

Or as I like to think of it... the remainder of the playoffs ;)

Given the fact that Zubrus returned to finish the game, and that Giroux has no history, I think it's tough to say that he will definitely get suspended, even if the hit warrants it. Glad that Zubrus is fine, though.

Time for the obligatory Go Devils.

Odd..

Neal hits two players in the head on the same shift (one intentionally), has a history of suspensions, and gets 1 game.

Giroux gets the same suspension for his hit on Zubrus with no history.

I'd be fine with a Giroux suspension if Neal got 5-10 games.

You forget he laid out Crosby in Game 6 last series. Bettman has been looking for the Shanaban ever since.

Well, just like I said in the game thread when it happened. Enjoy your free time, Claude.

There is a "star player" category on the WoJ I'm pretty sure...

2012-05-07 03:12:34 PM
wasn't Giroux the victim of a hit that lead to a suspension of a Penguin during the opening round?

2012-05-07 03:14:13 PM
BS that he was suspended. It was a dub play, but I think a stiff fine would have sufficed.

bah, dumb play

Time Traveling Bunnies: Suspension is official. Maybe we can have cup next year?

That's really odd. The hit wasn't clean, but it was far cleaner than many hits that have not drawn suspensions. Oh well.

This series sucks because the Flyers shouldn't have made it this far but are still completely disappointing by their lack of effort. I think the Flyers' skaters have only shown up for two periods in this series and that was in Game 1, which is terrible considering how badly they outworked a much better team in the first round.

And the real shame of it is that there's no one on the Devils that is hate-able anymore so I can't even be bitter towards them. Assholes!

The National Hockey League has suspended Philadelphia Flyers forward Claude Giroux one-game for his hit to the head of New Jersey Devils' Dainius Zubrus on Sunday

nhl.com is reporting:

Martin Brodeur is 40.

Flyers spilled their bucket vs the Pens and haven't been able to refill. The odd thing is Bryz has played very well and Marty as looked really weak.

I still wouldn't be shocked if they came back, nor would I be shocked if they mailed it in tomorrow.

There's no such thing as a stiff fine. You can get fined up to $2500 under the CBA. You don't get paid for games you are suspended. Of course everyone works for free in the playoffs so Raffi Torres, for example, isn't out a dime yet.

Pretty surprised by this ruling. I think Shanny got himself backed into a corner with pervious rulings these playoffs.

can't really argue this one. watch whole reasoning.....

The greatest thing that could ever happen is if the Hulkster from Pittsburgh was there, pointing and laughing at Scott Hartnell when the Flyers get eliminated.

I would like so very, very badly for that to happen.

2012-05-07 03:24:53 PM
Bullshiat ruling. You can argue if the hit was dirty or not as much as you want, but the penalty is incredibly inconsistent than what has been handed down for other teams.

All the NHL is doing at this point is making a giant folder of instances they can point to to say they did everything in their power to limit injuries when the lawsuits start flying like they are in the NFL.

"remember that time we suspended a teams superstar before their elimination game in the middle of the playoffs for a questionable hit?"

Agreed on all of that. At least I will have a team to root against (the Kings) if they finalize their fold.

2012-05-07 03:26:18 PM
Also, I have implied a self imposed moratorium on attending any more flyers games this season, as every game I have been to during the playoffs has been a disaster for them.

So when they do win the cup this year, everyone can thank me for staying away.

as long as it isn't with your elbow, and you say you were aiming for the body.

Doesn't the NHLPA have a chance for appeal here?

Such crap. Ovechkin was trying to kick the puck onto his stick for a shot on Lundqvist (he's in the slot, for heaven's sake), looks up and there's Girardi. Yeah, he jumped, good thing too or he'd have been crushed. And there was no head contact. Charge and nothing more. It's a fast game, and clearly you've never played it.

Sadly I agree. I'd say they've mailed in this series but that's an overstatement. I'm not giving up by any means, we are the last team to come back from 3-0 deficit so this is incredibly feasible especially considering our offensive talent, but the way they've played so far this series is lackluster at best.

Bryz has been outstanding so far and that should really speak volumes about the effort this series. It might take a wake up call such as a game without Claude to spark the team.

How is this inconsistent?

Deliberate hit to the head, Giroux has no history, and Zubrus wasn't injured (which shouldn't matter, but does factor into punishment severity). It's consistent with the way that the NHL has been ruling on the hits all postseason.

I agree more. Brodeur is as non-asshole a goalie as I can find. The players don't even talk smack. They don't even go for cheap hits or boardings... they just play... nice hockey.

DAMN YOU, NEW JERSEY!

MugzyBrown: Flyers spilled their bucket vs the Pens and haven't been able to refill. The odd thing is Bryz has played very well and Marty as looked really weak.

for many Philly fans, the first round was all that was worth watching. If they had swept it would have been more glorious. I did expect better out of them in Round 2 but they have phoned it in horribly. It seems no one from Round 1 is even showing up anymore; you hardly hear their names mentioned. Simmonds on the other hand seems to be the only one trying to get anything going.

I've seen more pathetic phoning-ins in years past (Caps are guilty vs Lightning I believe it was), so it's not as horrible as it could be.

Suspension-wise I really thought it wouldn't happen. It seems the Mainstream Press is no longer hounding the NHL like they did in round one after Pitt/Philly Game 3.

Yanks_RSJ: And nothing for repeat offender Alex Ovechkin.

My boss is a die-hard Rangers fan and we discussed the hit. The problem is that Ovie is like the kid in the rink who doesn't know how to stop and just runs into things. He went to kick the puck, got completely out of control, saw the other player in the corner of his eye and tried to air-stop or do something Russian and borscht-like.
It was a big hit and not the nicest hit, but it was not even meant to be a hit. He just did his "OVIE GO FAST VROOOOM I STOP USING SOMETHING ELSE" thing and it happened to be a NYR this time.

I agree with the repeat offender thing, though. He does go dirty a lot more than he should.

this wasn't dirty though. it was careless.

Yeah, you know they've been waiting for a chance to say that the Flyers did something dirty this postseason. Apparently this one borderline hit is enough for them to forget how dirty and weak their own team is.

The NHL handing down suspensions on crap like this is what is going to turn hockey into soccer.

Just the hit by itself was worthy of something, IMO. But the bitaching to the ref about a clean check plus the deliberate slash before the hit and then continuing to bitach after the hit is more than worthy of a suspension. And if the Devils finish them off tomorrow, Giroux will be ripped apart by the Philly fans.

No, the fact that the Flyers were a rough team 30 years ago was enough for them to justify their team's pathetic cheap thuggery last round.
