sooo... 'steampunk' is basically taking victorian fashion, removing a few layers for comfort, and then pinning little gears and shiat to it?

yay for certain victorian fashions, eh on everything else.

tip: skip ahead about four minutes to get to the good stuff.

Actually, it's more than that for the purists. It's a literary genre where they get creative and speculate on how certain things would have existed in Victorian times. People really do put some effort into it, in both writing and art, and it's pretty sweet.

Then you haver the bandwagon Steampunk people. I think this video sums that part up: Just Glue Some Gears On It (And Call It Steampunk)

You should also check out some of the art people have made, it's amazing. This laptop is a great example. Far more than sticking some gears on something, they have reworked it with wood and brass. More cool stuff on the website

I'll just drop a couple book titles here that I've rather enjoyed recently...

The Doomsday Vault: A Novel of the Clockwork Empire

Actually I was googling around and I can't find any mention of why she left the show. I'd be curious to hear if there's anything more interesting than "moving on to other projects".

Anyway I never found her performance to be good at all. The one with her Chinese mother was OK, but the rest sucked.

It's tough to find good Steampunk fiction. Some of it goes way over the top, some of it takes.. odd tangents (apparently hetero men are a severely endangered species in Gail Carriger's books). Those two I linked are solid, and both have sequels either lined up or already out. I'd put Phoenix Rising as the better of the two.

I had this idea of this Western Steampunk alternative history set in North America, but, I'm a fan of Deadlands, so that influence could seep through.

Not according to wiki, which talks about her acting career starting at age 7. And if she was such a geek, then how come she talks about learning about steampunk in this video? It's not exactly a fringe culture, at least in the circles she allegedly runs in.
Honestly, her persona seems manufactured to appeal to geeks, like a more approachable version of Munn: interested in geek culture, but never knowledgable enough to be threatening to insecure nerds.

And she was the weakest part of Dr. Horrible, both in terms of singing and acting.

What else would you call someone who was a) homeschooled

b) raised on old school video games (she's mentioned Zork and King's Quest and you can't get much more old school than that)

c) double majored in Music and Mathematics (she was accepted at Juilliard but chose to go to UT where she got a full ride)

d) is a self confessed "Video game addict"

Also, season 5 of The Guild (which she writes) dealt with steampunk subculture as one of its plot lines and it came out in 2011 so I suspect the whole "learning about steampunk" thing is just for the benefit of the video.

Homeschooled. Most geeks, like most people, are not homeschooled; and many homeschooled kids are not geeks.

b) raised on old school video games (she's mentioned Zork and King's Quest and you can't get much more old school than that)

You must be young.

c) double majored in Music and Mathematics (she was accepted at Juilliard but chose to go to UT where she got a full ride)

I was a music major, and I can tell you, there were not a lot of geeks in the program.

d) is a self confessed "Video game addict"

"Self-confessed" is in no way inconsistent with what I said.

Good Lord. Would the two of you stop and look at yourselves for one minute. If Jesus came back today, is this what you would want left as the last written account of your actions?
Where is the endgame with this little back and forth? Is one of you going to give in and admit that Ms. Day is not/is actually a hardcore nerd? What is the prize related to that? I can only assume that since we're breaking down each other's posts on a piece by piece basis that there is some sort of serious money involved for this level of debate.

Well, both of you can knock it off. Ms. Day will have you know that her nerd cred is irrelevant because she is giving it all up to spend every waking moment with me. From now on, you two can debate the level of her devotion to Sun Worshiping Dog Launcher, because that is all she cares about now.

I hope to the holy FSM that if she doesn't read Fark. Wheaton is around here, he may have told her about this place, and here we have the two of you slap fighting over some her nerd status. Go put some pants on and try to be civil.
