I for think it's a great idea for the republicans to take on Obamas' immigration record. It's not like there have been a record number of deportations on his watch with a heavy focus on deporting those with criminal records. Link

Anyone else notice that CSM has done a decent job of just reporting facts and not trying to twist them? Not perfect by any means but better than most these days.

They have done this for a very long time. CSM is one of the best for this. They don't just take AP wires and the spin of the day. In general they try to look at the info and make up their mind instead of sticking their finger in the prevailing wind.

Yeah because that whole Melting Pot experiment was a total failure. The obvious result has been more brown people on welfare.

Agreed. My grandparents got me a CSM subscription for my birthday last year, and I love it so much that I am renewing on my own this year. It seems like the only print news that isn't TRYING to infuriate me.

immigrate to

I was gonna call subby on this, but it turns out to be correct: immigrate to, emigrate from.

I stand corrected and out my ignorance.

So... let's say that every one of those 5,200 kids ended up in Texas, Ricky. How much impact would that have on Texas, a state with a population of about 25,600,000? Is that extra .0002% too much for your state's resources to handle?

Agreed, the melting pot that is Trolls and Regular people here on the internet have made it frustrating to have real discussions. But honestly, it just makes the internet stronger in the long run.

Everything is bigger in Texas, so that would be like 2000%.

Replace brown with Jews, Eastern Europeans, Irish, Germans, Chinese, Japanese etc. and you've made an accurate history of racists in the USA.

this seems rather contrary to the reports from two weeks back where illegal immigration was reported to have slowed to a record low combined with reverse immigration being on the rise for a net negative.

Truth. The very first law restricting immigration to the US targeted the Chinese explicitly but ended up effecting all east Asians. And the basis of the law? "The Chinese men are takin are jerbs! And their women are all whores!". Was either true? No. But by golly there were people who didn't like the Chinese and they weren't going to let reality get in the way of their own xenophobia. Sounds kinda familiar actually.

Yes, how dare President Obama improve the American economy to the point where foreigners actually want to move there! After all, that was the Republicans' secret plan- run the economy into the ground so the Mexicans would think their country was better and start going home!

The immigration issue is tricky.

I'm all for giving citizenship to anybody that's here now, which is probably 25 or 30 million people. The United States has room for 100 times that. But what happens in 10 or 15 years when we have another 25 or 30 million undocumented people here?

Our Republic can handle that kind of people infusion. My plan would award citizenship to the first 40 million people that showed up, then close the Southern border with a chain of nuclear power plants and our military. One plant every 200 miles from Brownsville to San Diego ought to do it. And half that power could be used to build up Northern Mexico. That's just "good neighbor" policy.

Our Northern border is relatively stable compared to the U.S./Mexico border. That obvious, right? People are going to get into the U.S. no matter what we do. We rule. The 40 million idea is a grand gesture. I don't know where you live, but in my neighborhood we don't just walk into each others houses and help ourselves to dictionaries and band-aids.

Most of the minors are placed in a shelter after being sent to HHS care. They stay in those shelters an average of more than 60 days, according to a recent study by the Vera Institute of Justice. From there, at least 65 percent of the children are handed over to live with a sponsor inside the United States, the study said. The report described their processing as a "disjointed labyrinthine system."

Yeah that's gonna deter illegal immigration.

And of course, once again Perry's right. Send them back. Obviously their parents didn't care about them or they wouldn't have put them in danger getting them here. Maybe the next group will this twice about doing this.

It is. There are all walks of life in the US illegally. At least Mexicans know how to drive.

Well, that depends on how you see the future role of your country.

If you want the US to continue to be the world's premier economic, military and social superpower then yes you want more people. By the time China's per capita GNP reaches US level sometime in the middle of this century the US will need to have a bigger population than China to remain top dog. Keeping in mind that China's population is predicted to decrease over that time span but will still remain perhaps 3 times that of the US. Also consider that the glory days of US expansion were during times when immigration was not really restricted at all.

If you don't see remaining the superest of superpowers as being very important then no, you already have enough people to at least remain relevant in world affairs. Perhaps your more concerned with maintaining the environment and rebuilding your once unassailable quality of living.

I do think many people (not necessarily you Hueg_Redd) have strong opinions but do not really know what the implications of different levels of population are.

The short answer is yes. We definitely need more workers. By my calculations, we need about 13 to 16 percent more people ... today ... yesterday.

If you're here now, welcome to the United States, but the world is a lot smaller now and the oft-quoted inscription that says, 'give me your poor, etc.," isn't just out dated, it's neither a constitutional mandate nor a universal civil right.

Like I said, 40 million ... instant citizenship ... a magnanimously grand gesture. After that, ZERO tolerance for illegal immigration. Solution found.
