I'm fully aware that Patrick Henry rode to Gettysburg to warn the Hessians about Irwin Rommel's armored division. I know the Preamble to the Constitution of Independence and I know how to hold my hand over my heart when I recite the Lemon Pledge of Allegiance. I don't need any dirty brown foreigners or liberal college professors telling me about America. I already know.

1 out of 3 Americans can't pass a basic test on material they haven't studied in years and don't think about.

97% of immigrants who are actively engaged in learning to pass the test and have been studying for it can pass it.

What we have proven here is that people who study the material covered on a test will do better than people who haven't had to think about it in years.

ImpendingCynic: DeaH: Anyone who asks who the president of Canada is needs to be embarrassed.

Perhaps, but not for the most obvious reason. There are countries that have both a parliamentary prime minister as well as a president. Canada just isn't one of them.

My mind went instantly trying to remember who is Canada's cerimonial labdog of the queen, thinking that was the President. Must be another title.

Fill in made up percentages, so it's different and whammo free story. Probably an annual deal too.

DUH. 97% of people who study and HAVE to pass to get citizenship succeed. Their entire rest of their life is based upon passing that test.
DUH. 1/3 of US citizens with nothing to lose and who haven't studied, fail.

Can we make a rule that anyone that can't pass this test is disqualified from voting? I don't have a political agenda here. I know there are plenty throughout the political spectrum who would fail. We could apply it equally to all races, ethnicities and genders. Make the grading double-blind. Allow people to take the test verbally if they can't read. I don't really care.

If you can't answer basic questions about the government, how can you possibly vote for its officers?

Yep. My immigrant wifey reads and writes in three languages, four if you count French:) and wouldn't score too well either. The thing is, they didn't come hear to whine about politics like your average loser who doesn't accept responsibility for their own plight. They came here to bust ass and get ahead in life. They typically left countries where people who bust ass to get ahead keep getting knocked down and having their shiat taken away from them by other people who are less inclined to bust ass like that. If the US starts getting a little too much like the communist and/or crooked countries the immigrants just left, only then will you see them start taking a greater interest in politics. The degree of social safety net type debates we get in a wad over are beneath their level of interest.

Yes. And it makes sense that the vast majority of immigrants who take the test would pass it. They study for the damned thing so they can pass it.

2012-05-07 05:53:33 PM
Look, I know Americans know frighteningly little about our own country... but did you allow them to study beforehand, and did they?

Because if you have nothing to lose, I think you're not going to put the effort into the test just to satisfy someone making a study.

However potential new citizens take their studying very seriously (my Mom did a few years ago, I know. Spent hours on it every night. And passed with flying colors. No pun intended.)

In other words, 97% of people will remember any given factoid long enough to answer it correctly on a test administered shortly thereafter.

Look, I'm all for education but its always been more productive to learn problem-solving, analytical thinking than rote memorization of dates that have little to no practical value in day-to-day usage. Tell a person the date the Declaration of Independence was signed and they'll know it for a day, teach a person how to properly use Google and they'll be informationally fed for a lifetime.

I can here her cussing at the cops as we walk in. She's belligerent as hell, doesn't want to cooperate with me. Typical Friday night so far.

But before I can clear, they want me to confirm that she's oriented enough to refuse treatment. She knows where she is. She knows what day it is. And then:

Me: "who's the president?"

Her: (ponders a few seconds...). "fark, I dunno, Bill Clinton?"

Me: "..."

Her: "shiat, I don't follow politics..."
