I did this very same thing last week. Saved $200 by flying into San Antonio and driving to Austin. I still put on 800 miles driving from as far North as Georgetown to San Antonio and back again a few times.

I love the Gill's fried chicken in San Marcos.

Then again, the traffic has only gotten worse. The tollway doesn't 'seem to be helping.

wells: If you don't mind adding 30 minutes to your drive, go 281 to 290 instead of I-35.
Much more scenic and you don't have to deal with all the semis and crazy/distracted drivers on 35.

If you go this way, wave as you pass thru Henly. I'm right around there

/yes, in the middle of BFT
//yes, worth it

If you like German food, definately Oma's Haus. Exit 189, 2 block east. I like ths Sausage Sampler plate with both kinds of sauerkraut and potato salad.

considering how bad traffic was on 35 the one time i've been thru austin, and how bad i consistently hear that the traffic is, would an alternate route REALLY add 30 minutes or simply take the same or less time yet more miles

Depending on time of day 290 from Dripping Springs and into Austin can get bad aslo.

For all the people who think this trip is a time-savings, know that I-35 between San Marcos & Austin is basically a parking lot from 3pm - 6pm Monday through Friday. I don't know when your flight is, but this plan to drive 80 miles could take 2-4 hours, depending. I would definitely consider flying into Austin directly if I came from out of state. It's not worth the perceived time savings to get on I-35, and there's no good way around it unless you take a leisurely drive through the Hill Country to do it (area west of San Antonio & Austin).

kayak out at sunset to watch the bats fly out from under the bridge. It's great. And the best BBQ is pretty much on any corner in Giddings. I don't know why.

Austin farkers: What's the joke about Matthew Macconaghey saying "alrightalrightalright"? It's a weird meme that I've noticed.

i'm not from austin, but isn't it something to do with his wooderson character in "dazed and confused", which took place in texas?

BurnShrike: spcMike: BurnShrike: San Marcos is a pretty cool place, like others have said.

Also, you can get a lot of Kerby Queso in Austin for $300.

You can get a lot of biatches with $300 of Kerby Queso.

biatches love Kerby Queso.

I'm not a biatch, but even I might put out for that. I hadn't been back to Texas for quite a while until last summer, and Kerby Queso was definitely on my list of "must haves" while I was there.

Is Kerby Queso the queso from Kerby Lane? With the delicious surprise guacamole in the middle? The stuff that takes 45 minutes from ordering to serving, but once you get it you re-think your plan to slash all the employees' tires on your way out? Yeah, $300 worth sounds about right.

It depends, sometime you can cruise at 90 mph no problem on I-35 and sometimes you can be at a standstill, traffic does increase at rush hour but there is a chance for a traffic jam 24 hours a day on I-35. 290 can get backed up going into Austin too, as there are a couple of lights before it becomes limited access. I would say I-35 on average is faster, but maybe not enough to be worth the headache.

Unauthorized Bratwurst: ColTomParker: Snake Farm. No question about it.

This, though he'll have to make a U-turn to get to it. (Wrong side of the road driving San Antonio - Austin.)

Do you only stop at Stuckey's if it's on your side of the road? Miss out on a whole lotta life that way.

On 35 it's in New Braunfels, San Marcos and Round Rock, if you call that "pretty much everywhere."

ok, so i'm not familiar with that stretch of 35, having only driven it 1 time. however, i'm fairly certain there are many more of them if you get not very far off of 35. my main point was there seemed to be one particular spot mentioned for chicken express, as though it was a one-off place, where as i drive past 3 of them just getting to and from work

You should stop in a little town just northwest of New Braunfels called Gruene and blow all your money at... oh hell, I think it's called the Grist Mill and then drink yourself silly in the Gruene Social Hall.

Rent a kayak at the Zilker Boathouse and float downtown. It's quite relaxing to be floating along with a beer during rush hour, watching all those poor schmucks stuck in traffic.

Tubing in New Braunfels! Rent an extra tube for your cooler full of beer, snacks and water toys. Takes 3-4 hours round trip (a bus will take you back up to your car). Really need to do it with friends though...

Oh wow, I can't agree. Houston and especially Dallas have nothing in common with Austin. In fact, Dallas is pretty much the exact opposite of Austin.

FreakinB: MindStalker: spcMike: bionicjoe: Serious traffic question. What's the toll on Hwy 45 around Austin? I've heard it can save a lot of time to go around, but I shouldn't be hitting rush hour. Worth the toll?

Depends. The toll is kind of pricey, around $1, $1.25. But whether you should take the toll depends on where you are going. I'm assuming you're heading to some where in North Austin. Mopac (loop 1) might be a better bet if you don't want to pay tolls. But, you should avoid 35 at all costs.

Pricey? Pricey?
Try Maryland 200, its $4 to take the 20 mile toll road. $6 if you don't have an EZPass.

The Verrazano Bridge has a $13 toll. Thirteen. F*cking. Dollars. The toll is only in one direction, but still. And then there's the whole issue of the New Jersey Turnpike...

Yea I wasn't thinking, a lot of bridges/tunnel often have a higher toll, their cost are higher as well though. And the turnpike is very long, as long as your a single car its about $13 (for regular cars, you are going to pay out the nose if have a trailer though) to take the entire 113 miles (11 cents a mile) compared to $4 for a 20 mile toll (20 cents a mile)

It depends where subby is from. For instance, if he is coming from Montreal he is going to be extremely disappointed with your suggestion. $20 for a public dance and with touching compared to $10 dances with full contact is a terrible culture shock.

The only thing I liked about strip clubs in Austin is that they forced me not to waste my money in strip clubs.

Kerby queso SUCKS. It's bland and tasteless, like melted white american cheese. If you want good queso, go to Torchy's.
