Boom. Toasted.

sniderman: tnpir: JoeJitsu: Since this was Kristin Wiig doing a marginally funny new character we will have to endure exponentially less-funny "tanning mom" sketches for the next 19 episodes of SNL, because nobody beats a character to death better than Wiig.

Man, could someone please explain to me the Kristin Wiig hate? The woman is a comedy goddess and a hell of writer, too. I just don't understand why she's so hated.

Oh, right, this one. Another Wiig character who just basically does the same thing over and over and over and over and over again.

Tickle Mittens: chimp_ninja: FreakinB: Tangent, but Eli Manning did better than I expected. That Little Brothers short in particular was great. Though I'm not looking forward to the inevitable use of the banana picture in sports threads.

As athletes hosting SNL go, he's definitely in the top 1/3 or so. That's admittedly a low bar, since some of the worst hosts in SNL history have been athletes (Michael Phelps, Nancy Kerrigan, etc.). but he's comfortably in the Shaq/Peyton/Barkley territory of athlete-funny.

I'd say you need to go watch those shows hosted by Kirstie Alley, but no one should be subjected to that. No one.

I think competitive eaters are now considered athletes.

Fixed.

Whenever you were 17-22 years old, that was when SNL was 'good'.

OMG, you're right! Is this one of those math tricks??

Because whenever she does a character in a sketch that gets a laugh the next week the same character is put into another sketch with some minor variant of the first week's success, and then again and again. There is no evident understanding that some characters only have enough mileage in them for one sketch (and sometimes not even for the entire sketch). Eddie Murphy can pull off Buckwheat or Gumby in multiple sketches, or Jon Lovitz can do Master Thespian or the Devil or Tommy Flanagan over and over again and still get laughs. Kristen Wiig takes the "Penelope" character or "don't make me sing" lady or "Target lady" characters and rehashes the same situations that were sort of funny once but the second and subsequent times just do not have any hint of innovation or freshness to the character, much less humor.

Wiig is a gifted mimic and can do some really good impressions but her sketch characters continue to be overused long after their expiration date.

Weekend Update's always been good. The political sketches have usually been good. The rest has been so-so at best, but occasionally quotable.

It's just that no one remembers the crap from old seasons, just the stuff that was enough to stick around.

She's still a comedy goddess and a hell of a writer. But she deserves to be Joffrey-slapped for coming up with this character, and Lorne Michaels deserves a double-slap for running it into the ground.

JerseyTim: Something about the media's focus on this woman bothers me. She's not a celebrity. The whole idea that she committed some sort of child abuse was a huge misunderstanding. She's just a wackjob who likes to tan a lot. I'm sure every tanning salon in America has some sort of freakshow who shows up five times a week. Does that mean that TMZ can follow her every move, TV news can report on her and SNL gets to make a joke out of her? It doesn't feel right.

She deserves to be whacked over the head with a heavy stick by David Soul.

FinFangFark: Politicandy: PeterPipersPickledPecker: Politicandy: "Hahahahaha, that SNL skit mocking my endangerment of a child was hilarious, LOLOLOL."

Geez - lighten up, Francis.

She took her to a tanning salon, not your mother's bedroom.

I'm not knocking SNL. It's just weird to me that this lady's not a little more freaked out about the situation. I would be curled up in a ball crying if I had child endangerment charges brought against me and was being mocked across the world, but hey that's just me. Maybe she has a better sense of humor than I do.

She also thinks that what she is doing is NORMAL. She looks like she's ready to star in a minstrel show, and she doesn't see that as a problem, so of course neglecting her kid wouldn't be a big deal to a nut job like her.

Yeah, that's fair enough point. Laughing at the SNL skit is not the weirdest thing this lady has ever done.

Silly Jesus: Diogenes: Silly Jesus: I don't understand tanning beds in general, but especially not during the summer. Why the fark can't people just lay out in the actual sun?

Same reason people do many things: convenience, laziness, and instant gratification.

Wouldn't walking out your front door and laying down be lazier, more convenient, and instant-er? Not to mention, free.

Not here. Too hot, too humid, you have to put lots of goop on and it takes longer. The beds they have these days? 5 minutes and you're done.

I prefer a natural tan. But I can see the appeal of the booths. Just saying, since you asked.

This is the type of thing that SNL would be expected to spoof; the Republican primary geyser-o-fun has been capped after all and this news story provided a real-life character that was crazy, has been charged with a crime, and has a look that is both funny and easy to replicate.

However, I do feel a bit strange sharing in the actual Mrs Tanorexic's laughter, as she has proven to be a danger to her child (well, unless someone else took the tyke tanning) and I've known some tanning addicts. One of my coworkers gave herself skin cancer at age 19 and still didn't quit!

Okay, that's one skit out of hundreds. You may not like all the characters (I can't stand the Target Lady) but Kristin Wiig herself is hilarious.

And yes, I'd hit it.

Ah, that makes more sense. Well, as much sense as laying in a bed of light bulbs and getting cancer can make.

Still does.

Exactly. That was the first thing I noticed when I watched that segment. She wasn't dark enough. It would have been even funnier if they had gotten the color right.
