Without spoiling anything, there are several all-out superhero brawls and felt like they were taken right from the comics.

Gotta agree. It was a beautifully smooth translation between the mediums.

When there were like 4 of them on top of the giant space bug pounding the crap out of it as it glided through the building. Panoramic, multiple heroes doing their thing simultaneously without cutting from one hero to the other -- visually stunning and deeply satisfying.

Sure, it had Whedon's fingerprints all over it. But it's a perfect fit for the Avengers in terms of humor and intercharacter conflict.

That's not really why it worked, since completely stupid summer movies have success all the time.

SPOILERS (face it, there may be a bunch in this thread)

I think it worked because Whedon understood the characters. The only one that didn't gel for me was Rufilo's Banner, a little too Jeff Goldblum scientist for me, and not really enough back story on Barton to really care about him, but what we did see of him wasn't bad. (my wife thought the actor was too old)

If they indeed go with Thanos in Avengers 2, it will be interesting on how they play him off. will they go full on Infinity Gauntlet? Will they include Adam Warlock or Silver Surfer?

I was highly skeptical on that going in, and was pleasantly surprised. And putting him in the motion suit and building the Hulk around him made a HUGE difference. They finally got the old green bean right.

Even when there wasn't any humor. When they were at each other's throats on the Helicarrier I was physically uncomfortable.

totally agree. usually with comic book movies i feel like once i get the gist of a fight scene or can see an unnecessary bit of dialog coming up i feel fine jumping out for a few minutes, but the whole thing felt lean and every scene held my interest.

The scene that really did it for me was in the rolling street melee - Captain America and Iron Man are going to be outflanked and Iron Man fires at Captain America who uses his shield to redirect the blast into some aliens. Simple, yet awesome. Not as visually awesome as the Hulk and Thor on the space bug, but awesome nonetheless.

The writers nailed it. Spoilers!

Here's an example of how NOT to do a superhero movie: X3. Too focused on Wolverine (for a supposed team movie), ruined Cyclops (he isn't a pansy, he's a damn leader and can kick pretty much anyone on the X-Men's ass), and had all the wrong matchups. They had Colossus. They had Juggernaut. Two heavy hitters. Have a 10 minute fight scene between them and just destroying SF, and people would pay just to watch it. But they didn't. They went with "lets have brains outsmart brawn" instead of "This is a comic book movie, lets have brawn and brawn smash each other". It had a love story in a place that didn't need one. Rogue gets jealous because Iceman was friends with Kitty, SO SHE MUST LOSE HER POWER SO SHE CAN BE WITH HIM.

In Avengers: Focused on all the characters. At the end, they needed a plan. Iron Man never led a group. Neither did Thor (he WAS the group on Asgard), or BW, Hawkeye, etc. They turned to Cap. The heavy hitters all tangled with each other at some part. Thor vs Iron Man. Thor vs Hulk. Fights people want to see just for the sheer coolness factor associated with it. They had brains outsmart brains, and they had brawn beat the shiat out of brawn. It had comedy. It didn't have a love story because there was no need for one. The writers knew what people wanted to see, and I have no complaints.

One of my favorite parts was during that fight. Hulk realizing that Thor was pretty damn powerful, and Mjolnir actually kinda hurts. Hulk immediately tries going for the hammer when Thor loses it, but JUST CAN'T LIFT IT. The strongest creature on the planet, and he can't lift a hammer! Hulk actually gets frustrated for a second and Thor capitalizes with a knee to the chin. Loved that part.

I think they did a good job with him in the movie. He's an absurd character and they treated him as a master assassin who has a bow and arrow fetish.

I really liked how they made use of him in the final battle.

FTA: There is a little bit of homework to do before you see the movie, though.....This means you need to have seen the previous movies or at least be aware of the origin stories of Iron Man, Thor, and Captain America.

I really disagree. While yes, its a better movie if you have the background, its enjoyable for all. I'm quite annoyed that this reviewer would discourage novices from seeing this movie.

I did too and had to look up what Hulk said when I got out of the theater. It made me laugh again when i found out what he said. Also, I didn't realize who the Master's helper was at first, which was a nice surprise.

Actually, I was impressed by how well Whedon suppressed the urge to go all Whedoney on us. The "glowstick of destiny" thing was basically the only really offensively dumb and self-referential line, the rest he kept fairly consistent with the tones of the previous movies.

I completely agree. His movements felt more real that previous incarnations, and the way he moved through (quite literally through) the scenery really made him seem like the massive, nearly unstoppable beast that he is.

ok i'm not well-versed in comic book canon generally or hulk specifically, but the movie presented him as physically impervious to injury/death. is that right or did i misinterpret?

If Cap's shield absorbs kinetic energy and vibration, how does it bounce off of walls and make noise when hit?
