cameroncrazy1984: Tatsuma: really the equivalent of 'wealthy French people' and extremely similar to asking to a 75% income tax.

HOW DO YOU STILL NOT UNDERSTAND MARGINAL TAX RATES

Right wingers understand them perfectly well. They just use them as a tool to gin up outrage among people who don't understand them.

DeltaPunch: The French in this thread is killing me. I don't care much about their politics, but my girlfriend (who is French) has been visiting me for the past few weeks. She was following the results all day long yesterday, and was totally thrilled when Hollande was declared the winner.

Basically I'm just typing this so that I can brag about how yrs. truly ended up getting some election victory sex yesterday afternoon. :)

Only the French would combine something as boring as politics with something as awesome as sex and think it was normal.

Tatsuma: Look, 40-50% is perfectly acceptable to me, even if it would have a negative impact on the economy, but 75% is just absolutely and completely ridiculous.

There has never been a single example of a high tax on the wealthy having a negative impact on any economy. The economy goes to hell when the middle-class is taxed. The rich will continue spending money no matter what, given that they don't have all that "losing their homes" and "watching their children starve" stuff to worry about. When the middle class feels the squeeze, they immediately stop spending, and national economies grind to a halt.

cameroncrazy1984: Tatsuma: he wants to raise the income tax to 'the rich' by 75%

He wants to raise the top marginal rate on income over 1 million euros TO 75%

President Obama calls and greets the newly elected leader of one of the United State's oldest traditional allies. Something which every POTUS before him since the use of the telephone has become common practice. Yet now all of a sudden because it is President Obama who did it, it is now a global socialist conspiracy.

Well, all choices were bad, but I guess the default Sarkozy was the 'best of the worst'.

I am not a big Sarko fan at all, but the last thing France needs is what Hollande is about to unleash on them.

You have to be really messed up in the head if you're jewish and you support anti-immigrant politics. I'm glad you don't live in the US.

Good for the French. They elected the person who will likely do the best for the majority of them.

2012-05-07 07:41:24 PM
The best part of Tatsuma's wharrgarbl is this phrase:

Tatsuma: the French just elected the worst man that they could possibly elect.

He just admitted, by virtue of calling the moderately left guy who won the worst, that any of the farther left candidates who would do more for the people he hates and got votes in the election would have been better.

This is why biased rhetoric makes you look stupid.

2012-05-07 07:45:08 PM

NeverDrunk23: Huh. Got to admit, wasn't expecting a TATtention whore derailment in this thread.

He's just mad because France elected a guy who won't completely demonize Muslims. So he says things that aren't even internally consistent with his own POV to flame France. It's like a teenager calling his parents "the worst in the world!" because they don't give him everything he wants.

Hey, what's goin' on in.....oh. Jews as a race of naturally astute business people are an obvious barometer of a nation's economic policies and health. Their overwhelming support for Obama in 2008 gives lie to the Republican rhetoric that he's anti-business. Also, the French are directly responsible for Hitler vis a vis the unfairly punitive Treaty of Versailles.

How dare you try to justify such abhorent and heretical notions! Just because Adam Smith explicitly supported higher tax rates for higher income earners, it does not mean that Joe-Blow-Internet can use fact-based data to support that policy-position!!1111!

Come on! It's socialism to forbit the rich from controlling government!!! Don't let the rabbled masses interfere with the dainty desires of the opulent minority!!! And, as we all know, socialism is by its intrinsic nature evil and anti-semitic. Therefore, let pure unfettered markets reign supreme, because that is what the baby Jesus preached when he made a mount with a sermond etched upon it.

Especially since he basically agrees with everything Likud has been doing.

Exactly. It sounds like he's saying both sides are bad, which is fine, but he's also saying both are the worst options ever. So what could they have done? Even from Tats' view, it seems like France got the best option.

The only thing I can see in this thread where he says it'll be bad for France is that weird-ass statement that 25% of French Jews will be leaving. Which sounds a hell of a lot like what happened in 2004 when all the Dems left. Right? We all went to Canada, didn't we?

We did go to Canada. Turns out that getting drunk, stripping naked and running into churches on Sunday screaming is grounds for deportation, who know. So we all came back and elected Taxbongo to kill off the job creators.

Tatsuma: Patterson: Ouf...ma conjugaison fait dûr un peut...

Operatif polique. 'Facile de'. 'habiter la France'. 'qu'on aille'. 'fait dûr un peut.'

C'est un desastre, pur et simple.

Tu sais, tu fais beaucoup de fautes toi-même. Si tu veux te vanter de ton français et critiquer la grammaire des autres, achète un Béscherelle et apprends à faire les accents. (Grâce à la loi de Murphy, j'ai probablement fait au moins une faute moi-même, mais ce n'est pas moi qui me présente comme expert en langue et politique française.)

You assume the "best and brightest" will leave because you assume they all share your extreme paranoia of all things "socialist" (not to mention your apparent misunderstanding of how marginal tax rates work.) But many people with high incomes are fine living under what passes for socialism these days (which is more properly described as left-liberalism with a relatively strong commitment to the welfare state.) An educated (and well-fed and healthy) populace and well-developed infrastructure are far more important factors in attracting the kinds of businesses that increase national prosperity than are low tax rates. Many people are fine with paying taxes so long as they see the taxes going to health care, educations, pensions, etc. They get grumpy if they think they're being spent the wrong way. And conservative governments are often the most fiscally irresponsible; they're committed to cutting taxes, and often do so before addressing spending. They then find that even with austerity programs, they can't cut spending as much as they want (especially since they often embrace expensive budget items like the military, bein "tough on crime" and imprisoning lots of people, etc.) conservative governments often generate higher deficits than leftist ones Their spending cuts also throw people out of work, deepening recessions. Parties on the left, in contrast, embrace progressive taxation and argue taxes should be spent in ways that help the disadvantaged, stimulate the economy, improve education and health care, etc. They sometimes mess up too, but empirical evidence doesn't support the idea that right-wing governments are fiscally responsible and left-wing ones disastrous.

Personal incomes over €1M are very rare, so this tax is going to affect very few people. Even most "best and brightest" will never be affected, while the tax will raise revenue that properly invested could create more "best and brightest." Will some very highly-paid people leave? Maybe, though I doubt it will be many.

As for the situation of French Jews, it's hard to see how Hollande would be worse than Sarkozy. The increase in reports of anti-Semitism occurred under Sarkozy, and it's not hard to understand the most likely cause. Policies like the Burka ban, bans on praying in the street, and the stupid halal meat controversy have to be portrayed in neutral terms even of motivated by anti-Muslim sentiment: official secularism, concern about animal welfare or health and safety. But, surprise, religious Jews and kosher food get caught up in the same net. And it's Sarkozy who went after LePen's territory and voters by pushing these issues, not Hollande. Hollande has vowed to fight anti-Semitism and has said nothing that suggest he'll be hostile to Israel.
