Looks like Tim Cook found Apple's "Print Money" button.

A smaller iPad? Why would you do that?

The chart kills me. 20% of 2000+ polled would buy it because the love Apple.

That 20% would buy a frozen turd on a stick if it had an Apple logo on it.

I find it interesting that Apple is running TV ads for the iPhone, although I'm not sure why the lovely Miss Zooey is looking out the window yet has to ask Siri if it is raining.

Meh, I think an iPad mini or whatever they call it with a 6 or 7 inch display would be nice... but I fully admit I like the large screen for comics and browsing while laying around.

We have an ipad2 and a kindle fire. The ipad is the more advanced, powerful device but I find myself grabbing the fire more and more simply because of the form factor. I'm sure Jobs had some kind of point he was trying to make but one IS allowed to have devices of different sizes. 7 0r 8 times out of ten I'd prefer a 7" because it fits in my jacket pocket and is not unwieldy on the treadmill at the gym.

I'd probably snag a 7" version if I could, wouldn't even need to have the cameras (although it'd be nice since it'd be much more portable then the current iPad's just in case I needed to do a quick picture)... but it would need to be $100-200 less than the current iPad's to justify it for me.

It'd probably become my defacto eBook reader and browsing around while laying around, probably wouldn't be as good for the comics though...

I get what they're saying, but don't get it as a product. If you don't want a smart phone or ipod touch, there's already something out that doesn't fit in your pocket. The ipod touch Maxi (AKA ipad) fits the bill. I can see making the phone/touch platform a little larger to keep up with other phones, but a mid-size tablet? Strikes me as pretty lame if this "mini" is too big to carry easily.

Why would anyone get something in-between the two with a screen size larger than a tiny phone, but too small to really enjoy?

/Of course people will buy it and Apple will make money, but I don't understand the type of person who thinks it would be a good idea.

Hmm. I have my comixology on the fire and it's quite nice. That said I'm sure they are that much better on the larger screen. I just tend to read them at the gym so I put them on the small one and prefer not to duplicate because neither device has all that much space or a card slot.

I just don't see Apple doing this. They have a huge part of the market share already in tablets. Why make a cheaper tablet that could possibly cut into the sales of the larger iPad? It does not make good business sense. Amazon is selling the Kindle Fire as a loss leader to drive sells of books and apps. Apple is not in the practice of not making money on its devices.

I consider 7in and 10in tablets two separate segments. The iPad is just not that portable in its current form. I definitely see more 7in Nooks and Kindles around in public than iPads

I think there's definitely a market for an iOS device with a screen larger than 3.5", smaller than 10" class. Parts are already easily available to do iPad 1/2 1024x768 resolution in a smaller form factor. Question is, would apps designed for a 10" screen still be as usable at 3/4 of their usual size?

I could see Apple phasing out the current iPad touch -- aka, iPhone without the phone -- and introducing a 7" iPod touch in its place. Probably not this year, though.

One of the intended benefits of the App Store (to devs esp) is the ability to code to one guaranteed platform. After the iPad was introduced this threw a slight wrinkle in that. With an "iPad Mini" you've got a third and then practically wipes away this I tended advantage.

With that said there may be a certain threshold the Kindle Fire can reach in this market before a decision is made. How that decision is made at Apple who knows. But I do know certain PC tinkerer types have been clamoring for years for a Mac Mini-Pro to fill the supposed gap between iMacs and Mac Pros. Which Apple has ignored for various reasons, most likely because they know these tinkerers will continue to buy budget parts and self build regardless of what they say. Somewhat similar to the Android rooters who make wild claims about what they'd buy if only Apple did this or that. These are the same crowd that wouldn't buy one single app for $0.99 in their entire life and can't blame Apple for ignoring their demands.

I tend to agree - I still don't see advantage of a smaller screen outside of reading a book. I see Apple making the iPhone screen a tad bigger and that won't mess with development of applications.

Perhaps if they actually used an Apple product longer than 5 seconds - they could come up with more original derp

Because they weren't going to put iOS on a machine with a hardware keyboard, they aren't going to put OS X on an underpowered machine, and they aren't going to price it at any level where the successful netbooks were selling.

iPads just are too large for on the go usability. 7inch really seems to be the sweetspot for real portability in tablets.

As far as screen, all that really matters is that the resolution is scalable between each iteration of iOS. And theurg14 is completely ignoring the fact that older phones and older versions of iOS have competely different features(or lack thereof) that create fragmentation regardless.

I'd like to see more Thunderbolty stuff personally. Sure they've used it in the monitors (which I think then breaks out in to more USB/FW ports) but I think their might be room in the line-up for a dock that allows for breaking out without the need to have a specific brand of sodding monitor.

Sony had the right idea with a MBA clone that uses Thunderbolt to mate to a desktop GPU or use an IGP when it's mobile.

Wow. You people are too busy parroting anti-Apple propaganda from the standard script to notice this: Subby f**ked up the headline. The article is about the iPad not the iPhone.

But, back on topic: when they can barely keep up with orders for the regular iPad, it makes no sense to bring out a cheaper model. And since Kindle Fire sales have dropped off a cliff, there is little pressure to compete at the $200 price level.

Once again, we learn the difference between items shipped to stores and actual sales.

And you know something? That's what pisses me off about the state of the 'netbook' market right now. These were supposed to be cheap, under powered, utterly disposable machines that if you got mugged and it was stolen, or destroyed on the beach... you didn't splurge all over the place like you would if if happened to your ££££ Apple/Dell/Lenovo/Whatever.

The EEE 701 really showed the right direction, very cheap silicon mated to low end SSD bits using what looked like a screen from a portable DVD player. £200. Sold well, got the job done, nobody QQ's when theirs is stolen. Sure you can make some improvements here and there, in fact the MSI Wind U100 fixed a lot of the problems of the EEE 701 and still came in at £210 (brought a re-badged Akoya in Salisbury's).

Now I see articles featuring the word 'netbook' and they are powered by Atom processors yet the RRP is £400. Why on Earth would I buy that over a £350 full-fat Dell laptop with a Core i3 in it?
